Reflectarray Design for Satellite Applications with Very Low Cross-Polarization Requirements

    Get PDF
Modern satellite applications for communications require a high polarization purity, usually with parameters such as the crosspolar discrimination (XPD) larger than 33dB. To achieve these values, some form of cross-polarization performance optimization must be carried out. The usual approach is to minimize the crosspolar component of the far field with regard to the copolar pattern in the region of interest. However, this generates suboptimal results since the figure of merit for cross-polarization performance, i.e. the XPD, is optimized indirectly. Thus, it is proposed to directly optimize the figure of merit to considerably improve the polarization purity of reflectarray antennas for satellite applications. For that purpose, the generalized Intersection Approach algorithm is used in a large reflectarray for a contoured beam application with European coverage. It is shown that directly optimizing the cross-polarization figure of merit provides better results than the usual approach of minimizing the crosspolar pattern. This work was supported in part by the European Space Agency (ESA) under contract ESTEC/AO/1-7064/12/NL/MH; by the Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades under project TEC2017-86619-R (ARTEINE); by the Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad under project TEC2016-75103-C2-1-R (MYRADA); and by the Gobierno del Principado de Asturias through Programa "Clarín" de Ayudas Postdoctorales / Marie Curie-Cofund under project ACA17-09.13th European Conference on Antennas and Propagation (EuCAP

The Yew Disaster Severity Index: A New Tool in Disaster Metrics

    Get PDF
Objectives: The Richter Scale measures the magnitude of a seismic occurrence, but it does not feasibly quantify the magnitude of the “disaster” at the point of impact in real humanitarian needs, based on United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR; Geneva, Switzerland) 2009 Disaster Terminology. A Disaster Severity Index (DSI) similar to the Richter Scale and the Mercalli Scale has been formulated; this will quantify needs, holistically and objectively, in the hands of any stakeholders and even across timelines. Background: An agreed terminology in quantifying “disaster” matters; inconsistency in measuring it by stakeholders posed a challenge globally in formulating legislation and policies responding to it. Methods: A quantitative, mathematical calculation which uses the median score percentage of 100% as a baseline, indicating the ability to cope within the local capacity, was used. Seventeen indicators were selected based on the UNISDR 2009 disaster definition of vulnerability and exposure and holistic approach as a pre-condition. The severity of the disaster is defined as the level of unmet needs. Thirty natural disasters were tested, retrospectively, and non-parametric tests were used to test the correlation of the DSI score against the indicators. Results: The findings showed that 20 out of 30 natural disasters tested fulfilled the inability to cope, within local capacity in disaster terminology. Non-parametric tests showed that there was a correlation between the 30 DSI scored and the indicators. Conclusion: By computing a median fit percentage score of 100% as the ability to cope, and the correlation of the 17 indicators, in this DSI Scale, 20 natural disasters fitted into the disaster definition. This DSI will enable humanitarian stakeholders to measure and compare the severity of the disaster objectively, as well as enable future response to be based on needs.Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria del Principado de Asturias (ISPA

the aim of this review is to know the most useful interventions to prevent teen dating violence, known and applied until now. Method: database search in Pubmed, Cinahl and Cochrane of articles published between 2010 and 2016. Conclusions: 21 potentially relevant articles were found according to the search protocol, of which 12 were analyzed following the established inclusion and exclusion criteria. All of them were developed in urban areas of the USA. In them, we identified interventions through performing arts, in the school, with family collaboration and miscellaneous, based on the identification of insane relationships and personal development. There were interventions related to the development of skills for effective communication, conflict resolution, the handling of emotional responses and the promotion of gender equity. It was observed that multidisciplinary work is the most effective form of prevention. However, despite being a current issue, there are few results of effective interventions applicable to all types of young people.

Effects of continuous embankments and successive run-of-the-river dams on bedload transport capacities along the Rhône River, France

This study was aimed at untangling the relative impacts of successive phases of human modifications on changes in bedload transport along a 430 km-long river reach: the Rhône River from Motz dam to the sea. We used a 1D hydraulic model to solve for water lines across a range of discharges and all along the reach. Next, using grain sizes measured in the channel, we estimate flow competence and mean annual bedload transport capacities using the Recking (2013) bedload transport equation. In addition, we used the Generalized Threshold Model to estimate the relative fine and coarse fractions of the load. Bedload transport estimates were carried out under present-day hydraulic conditions and compared to estimates based on model runs simulating an unimpeded flow regime and using grain sizes measured in bars as a proxy for conditions prior to armouring. Our results show that present-day bedload transport along the Rhône is significantly fragmented by multiple closely spaced dams. Mean annual bedload capacity varies between 2500 and 16,300 m3/year over all the reaches, with an average of 4700 m3/year. Results of the GTM analysis suggest that this load is composed of 89% fines. We find bed sediment mobility to be very low in most reaches, and that potentially mobile sediments are finer than the median grain size in the riverbed even at high flows. Our results suggest that bedload capacities were 25–35 times higher prior to bed armouring and flow modifications; dams had an impact 2–3 times more important on transport capacities than channel embankments, and bed armouring was foremost a response to channel embankments. Based on an analysis of the ratio of sediment yields to transport capacities, we propose a conceptual scheme illustrating how bedload supply, channel morphology, and surface texture coevolved in the Rhône over the past century and half. This study was conducted within the Rhône Sediment Observatory (OSR), a multi-partner research program funded through the Plan Rhône by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), Agence de l'eau RMC, CNR, EDF and three regional councils (Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, PACA and Occitanie). The archaeological excavations carried out at the monastery of San Juan Bautista de Corias between 2005 and 2012 provided the most complex, varied and extensive ceramic record currently documented in the south-west of Asturias. In this paper we present the characterization and analysis of a part of this pottery set. We have organized the evidence in chronological groups, technological groups and production groups, within 1560 to 1835 AD chronology. On the other hand, the Expense’s Account Records from the 18th century found in the monastery offer valuable in-formation on the acquisition of pottery by this community. The cross-study of both records, material and textual, unveils an accurate radiography on the monastic community consumption habits. Furthermore, it gives insight into the monks’ capacity to access different productions of local, Iberian and foreign pottery throughout the three occupation phases of the Benedictine establishment in the Modern Age. Finally, this work will undoubtedly offer a chronotypological framework for the comparison and study of ceramics in future archaeological investigations in this geographical area.

    Get PDF

A subset of low density granulocytes is associated with vascular calcification in chronic kidney disease patients

Inflammation is central to chronic kidney disease (CKD) pathogenesis and vascular outcomes, but the exact players remain unidentified. Since low density granulocytes (LDGs) are emerging mediators in inflammatory conditions, we aimed to evaluate whether LDGs may be altered in CKD and related to clinical outcomes as biomarkers. To his end, LDGs subsets were measured in peripheral blood by flow cytometry and confocal microscopy in 33 CKD patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis and 15 healthy controls (HC). Analyses were replicated in an additional cohort. DEF3 (marker of early granulopoiesis) gene expression on PBMCs was quantified by qPCR. Total CD15+ LDGs and both CD14lowCD16+ and CD14-CD16- subsets were expanded in CKD. The relative frequency of the CD14-CD16- subpopulation was higher among the CD15+ pool in CKD. This alteration was stable over-time. The increased CD14-CD16-CD15+ paralleled Kauppila scores and DEF3 expression, whereas no association was found with CD14lowCD16+ CD15+. Both subsets differed in their CD11b, CD10, CD35, CD31, CD62L, IFNAR1 and CD68 expression, FSC/SSC features and nuclear morphology, pointing to different origins and maturation status. In conclusion, LDGs were expanded in CKD showing a skewed distribution towards a CD14-CD16-CD15+ enrichment, in association with vascular calcification. DEF3 expression in PBMC can be a marker of LDG expansion
