New insights in the lattice dynamics of monolayers, bilayers, and trilayers of WSe2 and unambiguous determination of few-layer-flakes' thickness

    Get PDF
Among the most common few-layers transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), WSe2 is the most challenging material from the lattice dynamics point of view. Indeed, for a long time the main two phonon modes (A1g and E12g) have been wrongly assigned. In the last few years, these two modes have been properly interpreted, and their quasi-degeneracy in the monolayer has been used for its identification. In this work, we show that this approach has a limited validity and we propose an alternative, more general approach, based on multi-phonon bands. Moreover, we show and interpret all the peaks (about 40) appearing in the Raman spectra of monolayers, bilayers, and trilayers of WSe2 by combining experimental wavelength- and polarization-dependent Raman studies with densityfunctional theory calculations providing the phonon dispersions, the polarization-resolved first-order Raman spectra, and the one- and two-phonon density of states. This complete study not only offers a method to distinguish between monolayers, bilayers, and trilayers with no need of optical images and atomic force microscopy, but it also sheds light on the interpretation of single and multi-phonon bands appearing in the inelastic light scattering experiments of layered WSe2; some of these bands were never observed before, and some were observed and uncertainly assigned. We promote the full understanding of the lattice dynamics of this material that is crucial for the realization of optoelectronics devices and of novel phononic metamaterials, such as TMDs superlattices

Válvula aórtica bicúspide: ¿qué debo conocer? Revisión actualizada de sus aspectos clínicos y fisiopatológicos / Bicuspid aortic valve: what should I know? Updated review of its clinical and pathophysiological aspects

    Get PDF
The most common congenital heart disease in the general population is the bicuspid aortic valve. Far from being just a harmless valve malformation, it is a complex and heterogeneous disease. It is often identified as an incidental finding in healthy people. However, in a high percentage of patients, it leads throughout their life toward valvular (stenosis, insufficiency, and endocarditis) or aortic (dilatation or dissection) complications. Frequently, manifestations occur at an early age, being responsible for high morbidity and mortality. Even though in recent years intense research has been carried out in this field, the pathophysiogenesis of the disease is not fully known and many questions remain open. In this article, we review the most innovative and relevant clinical and pathophysiological aspects of this congenital heart disease

Objective To characterize diabetes risk behaviors in adolescent overweighed and obsessed women that study in a junior public high school of sub urban zone of Merida, Yucatan. Methodology Descriptive-Correlational with a sample of 50 female overweighed or obsessed adolescents who study in a public junior high school. Anthropometry data was quantified and clinical data. Self-esteem, anxiety-eating behaviors, family screening, body image perception tests were applied. Subsequently, the data was analyzed with descriptive and inferential statistics. Results Adolescents in the study have an average age of 13.34 years (standard deviation of 1.02 years) 46% overweight and 54% have obesity. 74% have low self-esteem, 16% severe anxiety, 74% severe familial dysfunctions and 48% have a poor perception of their body image. It was also found that cardiovascular risk diseases increases proportionally to the body image perception of the individuals (p= 0.031), the presence of acanthosis is associated with waist circumference (p=0.031) and anxiety increases according to poor family dynamics (p=0.027). Conclusion Findings of the study indicate that the main risk behaviors in adolescents are overweight and obesity, moderate-severe anxiety, low self-esteem, it is necessary the intervention of nursing in the school environment to decrease the impact of Factors and prevent some chronic condition.

    Island effects in Spanish comprehension

    Get PDF
A growing body of experimental syntactic research has revealed substantial variation in the magnitude of island effects, not only across languages but also across different grammatical constructions. Adopting a well-established experimental design, the present study examines island effects in Spanish using a speeded acceptability judgment task. To quantify variation across grammatical constructions, we tested extraction from four different types of structure (subjects, complex noun phrases, adjuncts and interrogative clauses). The results of Bayesian mixed effects modelling showed that the size of island effects varied between constructions, such that there was clear evidence of subject, adjunct and interrogative island effects, but not of complex noun phrase island effects. We also failed to find evidence that island effects were modulated by participants’ working memory capacity as measured by an operation span task. To account for our results, we suggest that variability in island effects across constructions may be due to the interaction of syntactic, semantic-pragmatic and processing factors, which may affect island types differentially due to their idiosyncratic properties.

Crosstalk Between Hypoxia and ER Stress Response: A Key Regulator of Macrophage Polarization

    Get PDF
Macrophage activation and polarization are closely linked with metabolic rewiring, which is required to sustain their biological functions. These metabolic alterations allow the macrophages to adapt to the microenvironment changes associated with inflammation or tissue damage (hypoxia, nutrient imbalance, oxidative stress, etc.) and to fulfill their highly energy-demanding proinflammatory and anti-microbial functions. This response is integrated via metabolic sensors that coordinate these metabolic fluxes with their functional requirements. Here we review how the metabolic and phenotypic plasticity of macrophages are intrinsically connected with the hypoxia stress sensors and the unfolded protein response in the endoplasmic reticulum, and how these molecular pathways participate in the maladaptive polarization of macrophages in human pathology and chronic inflammation
