Game-based learning: teaching systems thinking in an ict environment

Several studies highlight that the recent economic crisis is a consequence of the lack of systems thinking prevailing in our current economy. Instead of analyzing the interdependencies among processes, decisions, and companies, managers tend to tackle issues relying on individualistic approaches. The main challenge for professors comes from the difficulty of teaching students the core concepts of systems thinking and, thus, the need for cooperation. In order to facilitate the understanding of the importance of holistic approaches versus reductionist ones, we propose the implementation of game-based learning techniques. More specifically, in this paper we focus on the Beer Distribution Game, the Freddie’s Newsstand Exercise, and negotiation games. All of them represent systems where problems arise when there is a lack of systems thinking. After students notice the emergence of inefficiencies when they take an individualistic approach to decision-making, they are told to play the same game once again with a systemic methodology. In this way, they are able to realize that holism clearly outperforms reductionism. Contrary to traditional practices where face-to-face prevails, these games have been developed in ICT environments, where instructors can provide immediate feedback to students in order to enrich discussions. Our experience shows that the experimental nature of these games has proven to be very effective in helping students understand the causal relationships between decision-making and the returns obtained.Ayuda predoctoral Severo Ochoa. Robust swarm optimisation for fuzzy open shop scheduling

    No full text
In this paper we consider a variant of the open shop problem where task durations are allowed to be uncertain and where uncertainty is modelled using fuzzy numbers. Solutions to this problem are fuzzy schedules, which we argue should be seen as predictive schedules, thus establishing links with the concept of robustness and a measure thereof. We propose a particle swarm optimization (PSO) approach to minimise the schedule’s expected makespan, using priorities to represent particle position, as well as a decoding algorithm to generate schedules in a subset of possibly active ones. Our proposal is evaluated on a varied set of several benchmark problems. The experimental study includes a parametric analysis, results of the PSO compared with the state-of-the-art, and an empirical study of the robustness of taking into account uncertainty along the scheduling process.Gobierno de España (FEDER TIN2010-20976-C02-02 y MTM2010-16051) Principado de Asturias (Severo Ochoa BP13106

Objective: To analyze the structure of out-of-hospital emergency medical service (EMS) staffing in Spain, including physician, nurse, and dispatch center personnel. Methods: Retrospective observational study of the EMS staff and dispatch center personnel in 17 autonomous communities and the autonomous cites of Ceuta and Melilla in 2009. To obtain information, we searched the published literature and conducted a structured questionnaire survey followed by direct contact with EMS administrative supervisors for clarification. Results: The qualitative structure of physician and nurse staffing is similar in the different areas of Spain, with significant positive correlation (R=.71, P<.006) in physician and nurse resources between EMSs. EMS physicians differ in number in the different communities, however. Ceuta, Castile-La Mancha, the Canary Islands, Extremadura, Navarre, and Rioja have significantly more physicians (P<.05), while Murcia, Valencia, Catalonia, the Basque Country, Galicia, Asturias, and Andalusia have fewer (P<.05). The numbers of EMS nurses also differ. Castile-La Mancha, the Canary Islands, Extremadura, Ceuta, and Melilla have significantly more nurses (P<.05) nurses, while Valencia, Cantabria, Andalusia, Asturias, and Galicia have fewer (P<.05). Differences were also detected with respect to physician and nurse supervisory staffing of dispatch centers (P<.05). Conclusions: EMSs of some Spanish communities have more attending physicians and nurses than others. Dispatch center personnel resources also differ. The EMSs in different autonomous communities have reasonably similar ratios of physicians to nurses.

    Get PDF

Objective: To determine the beneficial effects of exercise in adults with Metabolic Syndrome. Methods: A prospective longitudinal descriptive study in people between 18 and 64 with metabolic syndrome after prescription of an exercise program for six months. Results: Body weight, blood pressure (BP), fasting glucose (GB), and trigliricéridos: improved health parameters after half-yearly review is noted. Conclusions: Prescription of physical exercise is últil to prevent premature death from any cause. To obtain these benefits, proper structuring necessary. Promotion intervention and / or advice of physical activity can increase levels of physical activity and is cost-efficient.
