Shifting landscapes of war: Rome and twentieth century disillusionment

    Get PDF
The First World War inspired artworks in which lived experiences were reimagined through visions of the classical world and while some of these guarded against despair others explored feelings of disillusionment. Painting and writing during the Second World War and beyond, and looking back past his own service in Ireland to his years in the trenches, David Jones (1895–1974) turned to ancient Rome to consider modern warfare. By reflecting upon the experience of Roman soldiers Jones attempted to come to terms with his own disillusionment with the British Empire and with the justifications made for the necessity of the First World War. His work provides complication to narratives of commemoration which support a fixed or stable vision of the past. Instead, Jones's memories of conflict gave transhistorical depth to his imagined Roman Empire – a creative landscape in which he could examine the causes and the costs of war

The collective use of the discipline of noticing to inform pedagogic actions

Professional development depends on enriching and expanding the range of professional actions that become available to be enacted either during preparation, or in-the-moment in a session. The Discipline of Noticing was articulated to support this process. Noticing involves both attention and awareness. The Discipline of Noticing provides a method for exploring, researching, or exploiting not only what one is currently sensitised to attend to, but also the nature and form of that attention, together with associated awarenesses which provide access to actions. In this paper, we provide examples of how professionals, in this case mathematics education researchers who are also mathematics teacher educators, located changes in what they were sensitised to notice, and how that became part of their professional repertoire by the process that Gattegno called “educating awareness”. These changes arose and were noticed through joint reciprocal reflections, and the subsequent planning and teaching of future professional development sessions. Among the aspects that contributed to the researchers’ / teacher educators’ development and engagement in the Discipline of Noticing, we emphasise communication with oneself and with others in group discussions

Exploring World Englishes: Language in a Global Context

    No full text
This new edition of Exploring World Englishes surveys varieties of English existing within the world today, and the debates and controversies surrounding its present forms, functions and status in diverse world contexts. This book examines how English evolved to become ‘the global language’ and looks at the political and cultural history that influenced this evolution. Now in its second edition, this popular text has been substantially revised and updated to reflect the rapid developments in this area, including areas such as decolonisation, multilingualism and translanguaging, along with English as a Lingua Franca and its consequences for education. Beginning with a discussion of real-life challenges relating to World Englishes that are faced by language professionals – particularly in the contexts of language education and language planning – the book explores and illustrates the ways in which the actual use and management of English, as well as the beliefs and ideologies associated with it, play an increasingly important role in contemporary globalised society. Routledge Introductions to Applied Linguistics is a series of introductory level textbooks covering the core topics in Applied Linguistics, primarily designed for those beginning postgraduate studies, or taking an introductory MA course as well as advanced undergraduates. Titles in the series are also ideal for language professionals returning to academic study
