    The contribution of work engagement and job satisfaction to workers' Psychological well-being

    Workers are assets to increase the productivity of the company. Workers who have a good level of psychological well-being will be able to optimize their potency and, eventually, to perform a high level of productivity. A growing body of literature suggested that work-engagement and job satisfaction may affect psychological well-being. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the relative contribution made by work engagement and job satisfaction to the psychological well-being of workers. Two hundred and six-nine workers (43.9% male and 56.1% female) participated in this study, which implemented the quantitative correlational research method. Work engagement was measured using the UWES-17 (Utrecht Work Engagement Scale), job satisfaction by using The Job Satisfaction Survey, and psychological well-being using Ryff's Psychological Well-being Scales. The results from the linear regression analysis indicated that 41% of the variance could be explained by both work engagement and job satisfaction on the psychological well-being of workers. Work engagement and job satisfaction could create optimal psychological functioning and experience for workers, resulting in higher overall well-being. However, job satisfaction contributed independently to a slightly larger contribution (22.23%) than work-engagement did (18.86%). All in all, both work-engagement and job significantly satisfaction predicted the psychological well-being of workers

    Religious tolerance among college students: How it's influenced by religious orientation and personality traits?

    Religious tolerance among college students needs to be maintained to create harmonious conditions and peace among the religious community. This study aimed to explore the influence of religious orientations and personality traits on religious tolerance among college students. This study used a quantitative approach and performed a survey method that utilized three measurement tools of psychological scales: the Religious Orientation Scale-Revised, the Personality Scale of Big Five Personality and the Scale of Religious Tolerance. The subjects of this study were 280 students from six universities in Surabaya. The results of the study show that, generally, there is a significant influence of religious orientation and personality traits on religious tolerance among college students. Partially, intrinsic religious orientation has a positive influence on religious tolerance, and on the contrary, the extrinsic religious orientation has a negative influence on religious tolerance. Of the personality traits (Big Five Personality), agreeableness and openness have a positive influence on religious tolerance. Meanwhile, extroversion, conscientiousness, and neuroticism do not have a significant influence on religious tolerance. Therefore intrinsic religious orientation and two personality traits - agreeableness and openness - are important to develop religious tolerance among college students. While college student who have extrinsic religious orientation tend to have low religious tolerance

    Hashtag war: 2019 Presidential election rhetoric in Indonesia

    Twitter as a social media has become increasingly used, including by its use by each Presidential candidate’s stronghold to launch a campaign to influence prospective voters’ electoral decisions in the 2019 Presidential Election in Indonesia. One strategy used in such a campaign on Twitter was by disseminating hashtags that were expected to become trending topics on Twitter. The dissemination of these hashtags aimed to build political rhetoric that can influence prospective voters’ electoral decisions. Thus, this study sought to explore the patterns of hashtags disseminated by each candidate’s stronghold to build political rhetoric and find out public sentiments in the posted Twitter contents. The number of tweets with #Jokowi2Periode and #2019GantiPresiden hashtags during the period of the 2019 Indonesian presidential and vice-presidential debates that were successfully downloaded using MAXQDA 18.1.1 software was 92,276. The research findings revealed that the distribution pattern of the #Jokowi2Periode hashtag tended to be more scattered (decentralized) by relying on the actor’s presentation and the actor’s speed in responding to tweets. In contrast, the spread of the #2019GantiPresiden hashtag was more centralized by relying on communication channels on Twitter. These two distribution patterns are discussed with the perspective of cyber psychology, through cuesfiltered-in and cues-filtered-out theories.

    Dating violence perpetration: Masculine ideology and masculine gender role stress as predictors

    Dating violence is one of intimate partner violence cases in Indonesia. Thus far, the motives of dating violence perpetration by a male partner to their intimate partner have not been established. This study aimed to identify the role of masculine ideology and masculine gender role stress as predictors of dating violence. This study collected data from three hundred and ten male college students aged 18-25 who have been involved in a romantic relationship for at least a year. The respondents were assessed with several measurement tools: Masculine Role Norm Inventory-Short Form (MRNI-SF), Masculine Gender Role Stress-Abbreviated (MGRS-A), and the Revised Conflict Tactics Scale (CTS2). Data collected in this study was then analyzed using multiple regression analysis techniques. The findings show that masculine ideology significantly predicted dating violence, while masculine gender role stress did not predict dating violence. The present research adds to the understanding of the association between masculinity as a cognitive system and gender-related experience of distress to dating violence. Furthermore, masculine ideology can be useful to identify men who are likely to perpetrate dating violence towards their female partners

    Aggression among adolescents: The role of emotion regulation

    Aggressive behavior expressed by adolescents is a worrying phenomenon. There might be circumstances underlying this aggression, such as adaptive or maladaptive emotional conditions. To study the role of emotion regulation toward aggression on adolescents, the researchers performed quantitative correlational research toward 943 secondary school students in the Special Province of Yogyakarta. Data was collected using an emotion regulation scale and an aggression scale. The data was then examined using multiple regression analysis to observe the correlation among variables. The result of this research shows that emotion regulation significantly influences the development of aggression. Further analysis of two strategies on emotion regulation shows that excessive emotion suppression affects the development of aggression, while emotion regulation through cognitive appraisal does not. The implication of this research is emotion regulation through emotion suppression has a more significant influence on the development of aggression on adolescents compared to cognitive appraisal. The stronger emotion suppression method is employed, the higher the level of aggression might be developed

    Managing depression in primary health care centers: The highlights of the program and further improvements

    Many people with probable depression present at primary health care centers (PHC) with physical complaints. Clinical psychologists (CPs) in Sleman district and Yogyakarta city, Special Province of Yogyakarta, Indonesia, have been integrated into PHC to provide psychological services. The study on which we draw aimed to explore how depression is managed in PHC. Thirty four CPs and twenty people diagnosed with mild to moderate depression participated in semi-structured interviews. Based on the thematic analysis of their transcribed interviews, seven themes emerged: community education and support, referral pathways, assessing depression, diagnosis, communicating a diagnosis, accepting diagnosis, and treatment of depression. The co-location of CPs with other medical services at the PHC level supports community understandings of mental health problems. It also encourages community members to use PHC services and to have access to various behavioral interventions for people with depression. Recommendations and directions for further research are discussed

    Academic achievement among university students: The role of causal attribution of academic success and failure

    Previous studies have attempted to understand various motivational factors that affect academic achievement. One of the cognitive factors this study focuses on is the causal attribution of academic success and failure. Causal attribution refers to one's perception of the factors that cause learning success and failure. These perceptions encompass three dimensions: locus of causality, stability, and personal control. This study aimed to determine whether causal attribution of academic success and failure predicts academic achievement. 156 students of Universitas HKBP Nommensen across batch years and majors participated in this study. An adapted version of the Causal Dimension Scale was employed as the research instrument. Academic performance was measured using the Grade Point Average (GPA). The simple linear regression analysis results highlight that causal attribution is a significant predictor of academic achievement. Differences in causal attribution between high performing and low performing students were identified. The results imply that personal control is the significant dimension of predicting student's performance, which means that student's beliefs about their capacity to control causal factors, will become a good predictor of their performance. Therefore the more higher students' believe that they are able to control causal factors will enhacnce their academic achievement

    How do relational and personal attributes affect trust in adolescent friendship: An exploratory model

    Trust is an important aspect in human relationship. According to previous research trust is influenced by 2 main attributes: personal (benevolence, integrity, and competence) and relational (support, closeness, and reciprocity) attribute. The study aimed to find a preliminary model to explain the association of personal and relational attributes in adolescent friendship. Two hundred and twenty participants (male=44.09% and female=55.91%) participated in the study. A survey method was used to collect the data. The design of this study was correlational design. Results from enter method in regression analysis show that six factors of personal and relational attributes influence trust at 44.5%. However, closeness had no significant influence on trust, so closeness was not included in the next analysis, the sequential analysis. The result shows that the relational attribute has higher influence on trust than personal attribute. Support and reciprocity factors which belong to relational attribute, has a higher contribution to trust in adolescent friendship than benevolence, integrity and competence – the latter three factors belonging to the personal attribute. Therefore building trust in friendship requires an emphasis on relational attributes of trust, especially that of support and reciprocity factors
