ABSTRACTThe relationship between government expenditures and economic growth is an ambiguous relationship. The results of previous empirical studies indicate that the relationship between the two variables can be a positive or negative relationship. The purpose of this study is to investigate a more detailed relationship between economic growth and government expenditures. The detailed information between these two variables is obtained by investigating the direction of the relations in three levels, i.e. in various countries, in Indonesia, and in provinces in Indonesia. Furthermore, this research also investigates the variables which can drive the economic growth in those three groups of estimations. This research is conducted by using fixed effects panel data method for 96 countries and 33 provinces in Indonesia. The countries’ data are estimated for the period of 1991–2014, while the provinces in Indonesia  data are estimated for the period 2011–2013. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the relationship between government expenditures and economic growth depends on many factors. Moreover, the results also show variations in the relations between the two observed variables in the three groups of estimations. Keywords: economic growth; government expenditures; panel data; fixed effects mode

ABSTRACTCapital account liberalization possibly promotes growth. However, the policy is considered a source of crisis. This study examines the effect of foreign capital inflows, in terms of FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) and FPI (Foreign Portfolio Investment), on economic growth and examines the determinants of capital flows to selected Asian countries over the 1998-2017 period. Based on the Two-Stage Least Square result, higher USA growth rates and lower interest rate differential are push factors of FDI, while domestic economic growth is a pull factor of FDI and FPI. The long-run FDI positively and significantly affects growth, whereas FPI has a negative but non-significant effect. The result indicates that an increase in growth can boost FDI inflows thereupon leads to higher growth. Keywords: economic growth; capital flows; liberalizatio

ABSTRACTIn 2011, the Indonesian government issued a Tax Holiday policy as an incentive to attract investment. However, the policy is still considered not optimal in increasing FDI realization in Indonesian pioneer industry. This study aims to analyze the influence of the Tax Holiday policy in increasing the realization of direct investment in Indonesian pioneer industry; as well as to investigate other factors influencing the inflow of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the industry. The results of descriptive analysis and VECM show that Tax Holiday policy has increased the realization of direct investment of pioneer industries in 2012 and 2014 by 5.17% and 4.66%, respectively. In addition, there are other factors that influence the FDI inflow to the Indonesian pioneer industry, namely: GDP, economic openness, labor force participation, loan interest rates, exchange rates, and per-capita GDP. Maintaining the stability of these factors is important to support Tax Holiday\u27s policy in increasing direct investment activities in Indonesia pioneer industry. Keywords: tax holiday; Foreign Direct Investment; Indonesian pioneer industr

Compared to other countries, housing financing in Indonesia is relatively left behind. In Indonesia, housing financing is dominantly by banking’s mortgage loan. Furthermore, the ratio of home loan to GDP of the country is still insignificant. If we compare to other countries’ banking sector, Indonesia’s banking sector is less efficient. This could be observed from the interest rate spread of the banking sector. This article argues that, housing policy in Indonesia should focus on improving housing financing efficiency through: efficient primary housing financing, liquid and stable bond market, and supporting regulation based on cost and benefit analysis; in order to provide affordable housing for low income people in Indonesia. DISENTANGLING INDONESIAN BANKING COMPETITION BASED ON BUKU CLASSIFICATION: IMPLICATIONS ON BANK SOUNDNESS

    No full text
ABSTRACTCompetition has long been debated as a vital factor determining banking performance and stability. The broad perspectives are divided into two streams, the ‘competition-fragility’ and ‘competition-stability’ view. Banking industry in Indonesia is experiencing consolidation waves as an effort to strengthen capital and enhance intermediation performance. The consolidation, however, inevitably alter the degree of competition. In this study, we propose a detailed assessment of competition effect through disentanglement amongst different bank clusters, particularly with respect to BUKU classification. The separation is done through Fixed Effect Vector Decomposition method, complemented by interaction variables. We found an indication that competition amongst Indonesian banks can be divided into two segments: the first containing BUKU1 and 2, while the latter BUKU3 and 4. Observing 57 banks using monthly data in 2006-2015, our study supports the competition-stability view, suggesting competition has positive influences on bank soundness. Adding more market power to the leader in each segment (BUKU2 and BUKU4, respectively) would have insignificant, if not malign, effect; the opposite for the challenger. Further, aside from competition, we found that interbank interaction promotes soundness. Keywords: competition; bank soundness; fixed effect vector decompositio
