    Get PDF
The ratio of non-performing loans is an important indicator that reveals banks' success in credit management. With the increase in this ratio, the profitability of banks is adversely affected. This study investigates the short and long-term asymmetric relationship between non-performing loans and the return on equity of banks enlisted on the Borsa Istanbul (BIST) using quarterly data from 2008Q1-2017Q4. We have formulated four different models for each bank with ARDL and NARDL methods to test the relationship between selected variables. Empirical results show a long-term asymmetric relationship between ROE and NPLs for most banks in BIST

Analysis of the Phillips Curve for Turkiye: A Comparison of the Johansen Cointegration and Artificial Neural Network Models

    Get PDF
In this study, the validity of the Phillips curve hypothesis is examined using the Johansen cointegration and artificial intelligence methods for the period of 2010-2022 in Türkiye, and the forecasting performance of the Phillips curve of these two models is compared. According to the Johansen cointegration model results a 1% increase in unemployment in the long run leads to a 0.854% decrease in consumer prices. This result supports the Phillips Curve hypothesis for the long run. Beside, the increase in oil prices in the long term was also determined as another factor that increased consumer prices. On the other hand, the error correction model shows that Phillips curve hypothesis is not valid in the short run. The modelling performance of the ANN regression is shown to be better than that of the Johansen modeling. The coefficient of determination values (R2), and other performance metrics namely mean absolute error, root mean square error and the mean absolute percentage error also verify the better forecasting performance of the artificial neural network model. In this context, the findings that can be obtained as a result of artificial intelligence modeling in the management of unemployment are considered to be important

    Get PDF
The main goal of this research is to examine the correlation between busy boards and firm performance. In this regard, panel data analysis was used to examine the data of 212 non-financial firms that were traded on Borsa Istanbul between 2018 and 2021. Two distinct indicators are used to measure firm performance, the dependent variable of the study: Tobin's Q, which is based on the market, and return on assets (ROA), which is based on accounting. The main independent variable was busy boards, which was indicated by busy boards (BusyComm) and average board membership (AvrgDirectorship). The analysis's findings indicate that, although busy boards and market-based performance (Tobin's Q) are not significantly related, busy boards do positively and significantly affect accounting-based performance (ROA). The conclusions supported the reputation hypothesis that busy managers create value for the firm

Selecting the Most Economical Ship Type for the Marine Business Investor: A Hybrid Approach with PSI-PIPRECIA-COCOSO Methods

    Get PDF
The demand for maritime transportation is rapidly increasing with the increase in trade between countries. Turkey's increasing import and export figures enable the country to buy and send more products. This increase has caused a significant increase in the number of ship purchases by maritime companies operating in Turkey. However, this situation indicates that there are deficiencies in choosing the most appropriate ship type for the investments to be made by ship operator investors. The ship selection process is of critical importance for investors to minimize their costs and increase the profitability of their investments. In this study, a hybrid approach was developed using F.PSI-PIPRECIA-CoCoSo methods in choosing the most economical ship type for maritime companies operating in maritime transportation. The research analyzes this data by collecting data through surveys on different ship types and the criteria effective in their selection. The findings show that criteria such as operating costs, environmental impact, income potential and efficiency are at the forefront among ship types. Within the framework of the findings obtained, ships used for energy purposes were determined as the best ship type to invest in. LPG tankers came in second and oil tankers came in third. As a result, this study presents a methodology that will assist maritime transportation investors in selecting the most economically suitable ship type and shows similarities and differences with studies in literature. The developed hybrid method draws attention with its applicability and effectiveness in decision-making processes and functions as a tool to support investors' strategic decisions

A Sectoral Overview on the Integrated Reporting Practices in Turkey

    Get PDF
In Turkey, it has become an obligatory practice for companies listed in Borsa Istanbul (BIST), brokerage firms and portfolio management companies to make financial reporting in the period starting from 2005. Financial reporting means that companies share their financial information in order to support decision-making processes for both current and potential investors, fund holders and all kinds of creditors. Along with financial reporting, the results obtained regarding the economic activities of the companies and the results of these activities are shared with the public. Today, it is seen that investor expectations regarding companies are not only economic and an understanding that takes into account the environmental and social effects of companies has been adopted. As a result, it is possible for companies to integrate non-financial reporting practices into their existing financial reporting processes and make integrated reporting. Integrated reporting provides financial information users with information about the financial status of companies, as well as their environmental impacts and social and corporate governance practices. Integrated reporting, which enables the information presented to financial information users to be more transparent and accurate, also ensures that corporate reporting is carried out in a healthier and more effective manner. In this study, the development process of integrated reporting both in the world and in Turkey has been discussed; and also the current situation has been determined. By examining the integrated reports published in Turkey on a sectoral basis, it has been observed that the number of integrated reports published over the years has increased.             Key words: ESG, financial reporting, non-financial reporting, integrated reporting.             JEL Codes: M41, O1
