Lexical Meaning of Medical Terms Found in English Book End of Days: Predictions and Prophecies about the End of the World
The purpose of the study is to find out the number of medical terms found in the book End of Days and to know the lexical meaning of medical terms found in the book End of Days. The method used in this research is the descriptive qualitative research method. Based on the analysis, the researcher found there are 220 medical terms found in the book End of Days Chapter VII with the sub-theme The End of Days through My Eyes. There are medical terms that show the name of diseases or disorders, the name of the place, part of the body, and other related medical terminology. The writer also translates the lexical meaning by using Dictionary of Medical Terms by Peter Collin and Dictionary of Medical Acronyms and Abbreviations by Stanley Jablonski to translate the acronyms and abbreviations of the medical term in the English book of The End of Days. There are many acronyms found in the book. Based on the results of the analysis of lexical meaning, the researcher concludes that the book has a variety of uniqueness in the content because the writers Sylvia Browne with co-writer Lindsay Harrison include medical terms in the book
An Analysis of Cooperative Principles on Asumsi.co's Interviews on Russia-Ukraine War Issue
Cooperative Principle is one of the pragmatics disciplines that should be known by everyone to conduct effective communication, especially diplomats. This research studied the utterances which were uttered by two Russian diplomats who are actively working at the Russian Embassy in Indonesia, Denis Tetyushin and Lyudmila Vorobyova in their interviews with Asumsi.co. The objectives of this research were to identify the maxims of cooperative principle which are produced by the interviewees in the Asumsi.co interviews, to figure out the types of maxims disobedience which are produced by the interviewees, and to recognise the motives behind the interviewees obeying and disobeying the maxims. This study was conducted with a qualitative approach assisted by a statistical descriptive method to see the distribution of the obedience and disobedience utterances. The result of the research revealed 47 data obey and disobey the maxim of cooperative principles. The most obeyed maxim was the maxim of manner, followed by the maxim of quantity, the maxim of quality, and there was no utterance which followed the maxim of relevance rule
Borderline Personality Disorder of Josh's Character in Sonia Mael's No Ordinary Love Novel
This research aims to investigate the psychological conditions of Josh's character in Sonia Mael's No Ordinary Love novel through borderline personality disorder theory by John G. Gunderson. A borderline personality disorder is an intense emotional dysregulation that can affect someone's personality. The research uses a qualitative method, and the writers are the instrument themselves. In order to analyse Josh's character, the writers use the characterisation theory by Richard Gill. Besides that, the writers focus on character psychological problems with borderline personality disorder theory by John G. Gunderson, which has several concepts; signs and symptoms, causes and impacts, and its developed traits. The result of the research is that Josh's character has a distortion in his personality growth because of his childhood trauma which developed his personality and emotion in what he experienced and perceived. As an educated person, he is good at positively managing things, as his thoughts try to stay sane in living his life. However, his emotional-behavioural management is disturbed by how his experience and self-growth developed his perceptions. In addition, he has developed all nine signs and symptoms of BPD which is also added by several other traits associated with how he acted out as a high-functioning BPD type. Although he has grown up unconsciously developing it, the positive traits also remain to keep it together in himself. In sum, his behaviour is proven to be borderline personality disorder symptoms caused by the personality growth he passed since traumatic experiences in his childhood
The Use of Kahoot Application in Comprehending Figurative Language
Smart phone as a device cannot be separated from our daily lives today. Many applications in smartphone are available to learn English language. One of them is kahoot application. The objective of this study was to compare the effectiveness of using kahoot application and traditional discussion method in learning figurative language. This was an experimental research. Two classes as control class and treatment class were observed by giving pretest and post test. Result indicated that students in the control class performed significantly better on post test than students in the treatment class. Further research needs to be conducted to combine the use of the application and conventional method
Analysis Mixed Traits of Jo March That Affect Her Gender Identity
The objective of this research is to reveal and explain the mixed traits through Jo March character and to understand the impact that influence her gender identities. This research employs qualitative analysis method and applying the theory of Robert DiYanni character and characterization, gender stereotypes and sex role inventory which invented by Sandra Bem. This theory has a purpose to analysis the gender issues which contained in this film. The result shows that the main character, Jo March has the characterization of self-sufficient, brave and principled woman through DiYanni point of view. Moreover, the research discovered that Jo March adopts both mixed traits which is both masculinity and femininity traits in woman’s body that made them include to androgyny. Her masculinity traits are independent, strong personality, assertive and analytical, while her femininity traits are affectionate, compassion, sensitive and warm. This mixed traits that possessed in Jo breaks the stereotype that female character constantly depicted inferior role, however in this research it demonstrates that Jo not only dominate by masculine traits yet she balanced her feminine traits as well. In this context, it affects her relationship with Laurie, the male character by leads the relationship to frustration and regret between them
Non-Standard Spelling in Wattpad Comments
Non-standard spelling on social media refers to the use of unconventional spelling and grammar. This article explores the non-standars spelling used by Wattpad readers in their comments. The study employs descriptive approach. The data are comments posted by Wattpad reader in reaction to a story by Shin_an Yuki's story Haf Soul Part 17: Takdir Yang Aneh. The finding shows that Wattad readers employ spoken-like spelling, repetition of letters and punctuations, shortening, and letters deletion in their comments
A Systematic Review of the English Situation in the Implementation of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC)
The implementation of the ASEAN Economic Community (ACE) in the ASEAN countries also has several possible impacts on the increasing use of English in the ASEAN countries especially on teaching and learning English in education system. In addition, to identify the skills to fullfill the requirement to work across ASEAN. There is a need to identify the need for the current study on the situation of English in ASEAN during the AEC implementation with the systematic review analysis. This systematic review was guided by the PRISMA statement (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) in its systematic online database searching involving keyword searching, inclusion, and exclusion criteria. The results show the methods that have been used include qualitative, quantitative amd also mixed methods. In addition, five main themes are identified; English for ASEAN regionalism, English skills for working in ASEAN, English as lingua franca in ASEAN, English in the curriculum, and English in the education system. Based on this analysis the review identified the recommendation for English teaching
Investigating Figurative Language Usages and the Dictions on the Instagram Platform
This research aims to understand about the different usages of figurative language, the dictions on the Instagram platform and how both of those terms are used. However, the object of this research are two selected accounts that fit to this research, those are @moodcewekk and @test-psikologi. This research also applied the descriptive-qualitative research, because the data has been analyzed by describing the results and its forms are written text. Besides, the theory that used in this research is the sociolinguistic theory. Meanwhile, the way the researcher collected the data is through capturing the captions (screen shoot). Then, for data analysis, the writer used the annotating and heeding method to get differences of the data. Therefore, after doing the analysis towards the data, the researcher found the results of this research are personification which has two kinds, both of them are using complete sentences and other used subject and predicate only. For hyperbole, it has several usages, such as the prohibition, the declarative or statements, and the advices. Then, for metaphor, it contains of direct and indirect sentence. Besides, for Hypernym-Hyponym, @moodcewekk is less using the dictions than @test-psikologi. Finally, the polysemy can be categorized as noun, verbs and adjective
Beyond Linguistic Documentation: Between the National Language and Local Languages in Indonesia
This paper discusses the politics of national language policy, especially in Indonesia and the effects of the policy toward the continuity of language diversity in Indonesia. Firstly, a short review of studies in endangered languages is presented in order to fit this discussion in appropriate place in the literature. To get more specific, the Indonesian language policy and its influence toward the country’s linguistic diversity is reviewed which is followed by the description of the media’s influence upon the threat posed to the marginal local languages. After this point, Indonesian linguists’ work will be reviewed in relation to their own status as members of different communities of practice. At the end, recommendations for improving the future linguistic works are suggested in light of language documentation, preservation, and maintenance
An Overview of Darwinian Literary Studies: A New Science-Based Approach to Literature
This article discusses a newly emerging branch of literary criticism, Darwinian literary studies, an approach with a serious ambition to change the landscape of literary studies. It seeks to outline some of the approach’s key contributions, such as explanations of possible origins of narrative and adaptive functions of literature as well as novel ways of interpreting individual works. This piece of writing also explores the controversies surrounding the approach, namely the stance that the approach takes against the postmodernist establishment and the criticism it receives. Regarding both the main ideas and the controversies, this paper seeks to answer and whether or not this approach is useful or relevant at all in today’s modern world
