1. A kutatás előzményei, problémafelvetés 
 
Barkóczy Ferenc személyét, aki kora egyházi, kulturális, politikai életének egyaránt 
kulcsfigurája volt, számos kontextusban és különböző témákat érintve vizsgálta a 
szakirodalom. Összefoglaló munka azonban még nem született az egyházi és kulturális életet 
újító és támogató rendelkezéseiről, kapcsolathálójáról. Gazdag reprezentációjának részletes 
bemutatására még nem került sor.  
Barkóczy személyével a hozzá intézett alkalmi versek, beszédek és színjátékok kapcsán 
kezdtem el foglalkozni. A neki címzett művek végigkísérik életének eseményeit. A jeles 
események, amelyek során az alkalmi művek legkülönfélébb műfajaival ünnepelték, a 
következők voltak: egri püspökké való kinevezés, egyházlátogatási körutak, iskolai évnyitók, 
évzárók, patrónusa, Xavéri Szent Ferenc napja, névnapok, születésnapok, az esztergomi 
érsekké való kinevezés, végül halotti beszédek.  
A Barkóczy személyéhez kötődő gazdag forrásanyag a reprezentáció egyéb formáira is 
kiterjed. Figyelembe kell venni a tudományos reprezentáció megnyilvánulásait, az általa 
támogatott nyomdákban kiadott műveket, az oktatást érintő rendelkezéseit, valamint 
könyvtárát, amelynek fennmaradt jegyzéke és kötetei alapján tájékozódhatunk könyveiről. A 
források tartalma és jellege alapján a dolgozat első egysége történeti/poétikai, kultúrtörténeti, a 
második könyvtár- és olvasástörténeti érdekeltségű.  
 
2. A követett módszertan 
 
Barkóczy Ferenc reprezentációs irodalmát, – orációkat, köszöntő verseket, leveleket, 
színdarabokat – a Petrik-bibliográfiából és az esztergomi Főszékesegyházi Könyvtár és Prímási 
Levéltár, valamint az egri Főegyházmegyei Levéltár azonos vonatkozású anyagából gyűjtöttem 
össze. A műveket katalógusba rendeztem, amelyben kronologikus sorrendet követtem, az 
évszámokon belül az egy-egy alkalomra írt alkotásokat helyeztem külön csoportba.  
Többségükben az esztergomi Főszékesegyházi Könyvtár Collectanea-gyűjteményében 
találhatók meg a Barkóczynak ajánlott kisnyomtatványok és kéziratos művek. A Petrik-
bibliográfiában található adatok közül azokat ellenőriztem, amelyeket az Országos Széchényi 
Könyvtár és a budapesti Egyetemi Könyvtár gyűjteménye őriz. A fennmaradt, különböző 
könyvtárakban és levéltárakban található Barkóczy-anyag további kutatás tárgya.  
Könyvtárának jegyzéke az esztergomi Prímási Levéltárban található. Az érsek 1765-ös 
halála után készítették az összeírást az akkor Pozsonyban található könyvtárról. A jegyzék 
tételeit két csoportra lehet osztani: egy részük fennmaradt az Esztergomi Főszékesegyházi 
Könyvtárban, ma is kézbe vehető, tanulmányozható. A könyvtár katalógusában a possessor 
szerinti keresés is lehetséges. A könyvtárban fennmaradt könyvek másik részét nem tudtam 
azonosítani a könyvjegyzék tételeivel. Ennek oka a tételek sok esetben kevésbé pontos, esetleg 
hibás címleírása.  
A könyvek következő nagy csoportjába azok a művek tartoznak, amelyek nem maradtak 
fenn az esztergomi gyűjteményben, csupán a könyvjegyzékből tudunk róluk. Ezeknek ismét 
két alcsoportját különböztethetjük meg. Egy részük esetében azonosítható a cím és a szerző, az 
egyéb kiadási adatokat csak akkor tudjuk biztosan, ha első kiadásról beszélünk, tehát az az egy 
létezett Barkóczy haláláig. A másik csoport esetében nem sikerült a jegyzék címleírása alapján 
megtudni, melyik műről, melyik kiadásról van szó.  
A hagyatéki lajstromban külön csoportban sorolták fel a könyvtárban megtalálható 
kéziratokat. A kéziratok nagyobb részét nem sikerült azonosítani, szétszóródhattak, más 
gyűjteményekbe kerülhettek az évszázadok alatt.  
A könyvek lajstromát a fent leírt kutatási módszerek és előzmények szerint, a könyvtár 
jellegének megfelelően rendszereztem. A különböző nyelvű – latin, olasz, német, francia, 
lengyel, magyar – könyveket külön csoportokba rendeztem, a nyelveken belül pedig egyházi 
és világi tematika szerint két újabb csoportba helyeztem őket ABC-sorrendben. 
A dolgozat keretei nem teszik lehetővé, hogy mindegyik azonosított kötetet bemutassam 
a könyvlista elemzésekor. Így azokat a műveket emelem ki és ismertetem tematikusan, amelyek 
különösen érdekesek Barkóczy személyes érdeklődése, a kor könyvkultúrája, valamint a 
magyar főpap kora európai kultúrájára való reflektálása szempontjából.  
 
3. Az új eredmények 
 
A dolgozat bemutatja a Barkóczy személyére irányuló reprezentáció módjait, ezeket 
kronologikus sorrendben az életrajz különböző állomásaihoz kapcsolja. A szakirodalom az 
alkalmi költeményeket általában egy-egy alkalmi verseket író költő életművén keresztül 
vizsgálta, olyan hazai munka még nem született, amely egy személyhez írott alkalmi műveket 
ismertet. Munkám egyik fő eredménye az, hogy bemutatom, az alkalmi munkák szövege 
hogyan reflektál Barkóczy életére és hogyan kapcsolódik azokhoz a ceremoniális 
eseményekhez, amelyeken részt vett. 
Ezzel a 18. századi irodalom- és művelődéstörténet több, ezidáig nem vizsgált 
szegmensére derül fény. A versek és beszédek, valamint a hozzájuk kapcsolódó ceremoniális 
események vizsgálata azt is lehetővé tette, hogy kibővítsem azt a Barkóczy körül formálódó 
főleg egyházi és világi magas rangú személyekből álló kört, amelyet a szakirodalom eddig 
kizárólag egri korszakára vonatkozva, töredékesen mutatott be.  
A dolgozat második része a Barkóczy hagyatékában fennmaradt könyvjegyzék 
feldolgozását, valamint a könyvtár által közvetített kultúra és szellemi irányzatok bemutatását 
tartalmazza. A hajdani könyvtár nemcsak a Barkóczy-reprezentáció kontextusában 
értelmezhető, hanem tágabb, európai kultúrtörténeti keretbe helyezi Barkóczy személyét, akire 
legerősebben a tanulmányai alatt Rómában megismert műveltség hatott. A dolgozat ezzel 
fontos adalék a 18. századi magyarországi könyvtártörténethez, és a 18. századi olasz-magyar 
kapcsolatok történetéhez.  
A 18. századi magyar püspökeinkről nem állnak rendelkezésre megfelelő életrajzok vagy 
monográfiák. A dolgozat ennek a hiánynak egy szeletét is igyekszik pótolni. A munka tehát 
egy kultúrtörténeti horizontú, a személy reprezentációját a középpontba helyező életrajz 
mentén haladó monográfia-kísérlet egy 18. század közepén élt főpapról, Barkóczy Ferencről.

CONTEXT AND RESEARCH PROBLEM 
 
Even though in the last thirty years hundreds of scholarly 
contributions have been written on the Revolution of 1956, the revo-
lutionary workers’ councils were not given ample scholarly attention. 
This is due to several factors. On the one hand, after the end of com-
munism in Hungary, they did not form part of the canon of the 
memory politics of 1956, on the other hand, they did not fit the narra-
tive of the burdened heritage of the ideologically driven history of the 
workers' movement. The lack of institutionalized labor history with 
modern methodology and approaches also deterred researchers from 
exploring the history of workers in the 1950s. Most publications by 
Western émigrés and historians writing in the 1990s are permeated by 
Marxism and its one-sided approach, the boundaries of which, in my 
view, have limited the possibilities of research in this area. Due to this 
methodological problem and the lack of sources that would have al-
lowed the exploration of the events on the level of factories, most his-
torians have focused on the macro-level of political events, emphasiz-
ing the asymmetrical political struggle of the Central Workers' Coun-
cil of Budapest and the Kádár’s government. What is more, the ques-
tion of the interconnectedness of the workers’ legitimacy with the state 
socialist dictatorship, as well as the alternative visions of Socialism 
among the members of this particular group was also ignored. The 
reformist ideas of the principal agents of economic control, aiming to 
renew the state socialist system during the years of the single party 
autarchy which brought about a ‘catastrophe in politics’, and how

these reformist ideas incited action and ignited the sparks of the revo-
lution, were also neglected by previous research. 
 However, the historiographical trends concerning the Revo-
lution of 1956 in Hungary had a positive turn in the middle of the 
2000s, as the interdisciplinary, objective and – following the archival 
turn – source-based methodologies became more and more dominant 
and resulted in several useful articles and valuable source publica-
tions. 
My research aims to join the historiographical trend which 
aspires to provide new insights to the contexts of politics, the interre-
lations of different political doctrines, leadership methods and social 
practices, as well as the multicolored value system of the workers tak-
ing part in the revolution. 
Besides the lacuna in historiography, personal reasons moti-
vated me in choosing the topic of my doctoral dissertation. As a uni-
versity student in Szeged, I made an interview with the only female 
member of the workers’ council of the Shoe Factory of Southern Hun-
gary (Délmagyarországi Cipőgyár), and her stories and the questions 
she raised motivated me to explore the topic further. 
 
METHODOLOGY 
 
❖ The ‘peculiar marriage’ of the Sovietized language and the 
use of political language in 1956. This problem is rooted in the dual 
use of language during the dictatorship: there was an ‘official’ lan-
guage accepted as the norm, and parallel to this, an everyday diction

evolved, having had its organic development, kept alive by the differ-
ent subcultures of society. As for the workers' councils, I examined 
the ‘filters’ between the two linguistic universes, focusing on certain 
expressions which were transferred from one to the other, and on how 
their meaning was modified as a result of this movement. The lists of 
demands and programs written by the members of the workers’ coun-
cils shed light on the concealed use and existence of the Sovietized 
language and way of thinking, which further complicates the decipher-
ing and contextualization of the real aims of the revolutionaries. The 
members of the society, even though they acquired the language of 
dictatorship, did not acquire the ideology completely, and only some 
elements of it (especially political expression reflecting on equality, 
democracy and the role of society) were built into the deep structures 
of their thinking. 
 
❖ Contextual text analysis. In analyzing the primary sources, I 
have taken the intellectual historian, Quentin Skinner's instructions on 
approaching the use of political language as a guideline. In analyzing 
historical sources, we must also focus on the complex contexts of how 
a text is written. It is also important not to take the context we identi-
fied as a determinant stipulating contemporary events, but, as Skinner 
put it, as a ‘final framework', which aids us in retracing the recogniza-
ble meanings which we could identify as the force of locutions as un-
derstood by contemporary society. In pointing at the relations of the 
conceptual variants between the workers' councils and socialism, I 
find Skinner's approach, which distinguishes between the

contemporary uses of meaning, understanding, and concepts, useful. 
A method of historical reconstruction is necessary which ‘focuses on 
the personae using the concept’, as well as the methods of use, and at 
the same time considers the target audience of certain texts and con-
cepts. Understanding the motivating forces behind the ‘personae using 
the concept’ is of primary significance, during which we must avoid 
assigning anything to the actions of historical actors that they could 
not identify with and which were not yet ‘ready' as historical phenom-
ena. 
 
❖ The differences between political actions in normal and cri-
ses periods. Most scholarly contributions dealing with the political 
processes of 1956 fail to reflect on the nature of politics. The collapse 
of the system in 1956, the descriptions of the early Kádár era and the 
process of reconstruction under Kádár are mostly based on the sources 
of the leading bodies of the Hungarian Working People’s Party (MDP) 
and the Hungarian Socialist Workers’ Party (MSZMP) and the docu-
ments of political trials and the state security. As opposed to this, I 
apply an approach, which, related to the deep state theory, distin-
guishes between the formal and informal circles of power. What is 
more, we must also bear in mind that the workings of politics differ in 
times of consolidation and crisis, the latter of which is termed by 
István Schlett as the ‘political state of emergency'. Following this 
chain of thought, as for the political situation in 1956, the identifica-
tion and analysis of different political values, patterns of behavior and

forms of decision-making can help to cast a different light on the po-
litical-historical events of 1956.  
 
RESULTS  
 
The main results and conclusions of the dissertation can be summa-
rised as follows: 
 
❖ The workers' councils were not exclusively Hungarian phe-
nomena, rather, they conformed to the alternative current of economic 
thinking and the mainstream of reform politics within a Socialist 
framework, opened by the wave of de-Stalinization. In this sense, they 
should be considered as an integral part of the history of the East-Cen-
tral European zone (belonging to the Soviet sphere of interests) in the 
1950s. 
 
❖ The workers’ council, as a key institution of self-manage-
ment, meant, as a neutral ideology, a perspective for those who, either 
in a political, or on professional grounds, opposed the mechanical cop-
ying of the planned economy of the Soviet Union, and aimed to find 
an alternative to the system based on central planning. 
 
❖ The workers' councils were the forums and institutions of 
grassroots democracy which, during a political crisis, could secure the 
legitim and consensus-based selection of leaders. Furthermore, they

established the institutions of accountability and recallability and cre-
ated lively relations between the representatives and the represented. 
 
❖ The experiences of the workers' councils in 1956 have proved 
that, during a political and economic crisis, the workers' participation 
in running an industrial company can be beneficial, and that they can 
attend to administrative and technological tasks as well. However, as 
for the period of consolidation, it is still unanswered, whether they 
would have been successful in managing a profitable business and in 
securing social transfers, if they were subjected to the changing cycles 
of economic conjecture. 
 
❖ As for the mode of operation, more forms and working mech-
anisms are delineated: the corporative operation was dominant, but 
there are examples of strongly centralized leading and decision-mak-
ing processes. 
 
❖ Next to the everyday management of the factories, the work-
ers’ councils, working out the “Hungarian way of socialism”, put the 
basic problems of politics on their agenda, namely, they tried to define 
the criteria of legitimacy, create the ideal order of the division of 
power and the controllability of executive power. In outlining their 
democratic political vision for the future, the revolutionary workers’ 
councils did not work on realizing utopias, rather, they turned to the 
classical concepts, institutions, and toolkit of Hungarian intellectual 
history and strove to redefine them in a contemporary framework.

❖ Most councils were made up of workers without political 
knowledge and preconceptions, who did not act upon abstract ideas 
and well-definable ideologies. Their political utterances were in most 
cases revolved around the notions of ‘nation, democracy and social-
ism’ with diverse contents in different contexts. These political per-
spective concepts concentrated on the traditional moral values and cri-
teria concerning the nature of the social and political system, based on 
the society’s sense of justice. Due to this, I do not hold the approach 
viable which mechanically identifies social democracy or other ideo-
logical currents with the heterogenous value system represented by the 
workers’ councils. 
 
❖ The thinking of the councils’ members who had more thor-
ough political knowledge concentrated on the notions of ‘freedom’ 
and ‘property’. The first manifested itself in outlining of the forms of 
political and professional representation, and the second in conceiv-
ing the necessary conditions of the welfare of workers. Therefore, they 
proposed ideas, such as profit sharing, the realization of common 
property or workers' shares to aid the creation of a society of proprie-
tors.  
 
❖ In responding to the structural crisis of the Soviet model, they 
did not consider representative democracy as outdated, but rather, as 
desirable, and to promote welfare through governmental actions, they 
proposed a decentralized structure. Therefore, they attributed a signif-
icant role, with a wide range of legislative and executive functions, to

the self-managing bodies, as well as the bicameral legislative author-
ity.  
 
❖ As the length of the period in which these workers’ councils 
could work is rather limited, we cannot give a satisfactory answer to 
the question to what extent, through the network of the workers’ coun-
cils, could the decentralized industrial leadership, integrating the na-
tional corporations through professions and the chambers of indus-
tries, create a more competitive and successful environment, and suc-
ceed in providing a better quality of life for the workers’ collectives, 
as opposed to the rigid and centralized system of the 1950s. 
 
❖ The workers and their industrial corporations embody a part 
of the Hungarian revolution, which was less opposed to socialism, and 
whose program and value system can be considered as an undeserv-
ingly neglected chapter of the political tradition of the democratic left 
and Hungarian intellectual history.

I. PREVIOUS RESEARCH AND RESEARCH ISSUE 
In the last nearly one hundred and fifty years, the research of 
weaponry of the Hungarian conquest has evolved to be so diverse 
that it is hardly possible to conclude their investigation with novel 
results in every aspect, in a monographic work. 
Diversity has led to fragmentation, and although this scientific 
evolution has fundamentally increased our knowledge of the era, 
now we need to be qualified as historians, archaeologists, natural 
scientists (mostly physicists, chemists, material engineers) and art 
historians to be able to perform an in-depth analysis of the subject. 
As a result, interdisciplinary cooperation is becoming more common 
in weapons research, however, experience shows that due to their 
incipient condition, communication interfaces between disciplines 
are still in an extremely unstable state, examining any new 
phenomenon easily deforms them and upsets the emphasis, 
proportions and structure of the dialogue. Although the same weapon 
type is in the focus of different disciplines, the questions are so 
different, that the phenomenon under investigation is intrinsically not 
the same. That is why intensification of interdisciplinary 
communication is required. 
This dissertation aims to offer a general overview about the 
methods and results that have been applied and achieved in the 
research of sabers, and to establish a practical connection between 
the different approaches. 
 
II. METHODOLOGY AND SOURCES 
In his candidate dissertation (Vooruženie vengrov obretatelej 
rodiny: sabli, boevye topory, kop'ja, 1980) Kovács László 
summarized the occurrence, context, distribution, and their 
archaeological conclusions of the Conquest period sabers. In his 
work he divided the swords into four groups according to their 
occurrence: 1: certified tombs from the 10
th
 century (71 cases), 2: 
verifiable stray finds from the 10
th
 century (36 cases), 3: uncertain 
data (28 cases), 4: weapons, falsely dated to the 10
th
 century (12 
cases). The database of the dissertation consists of Kovács’s 
mentioned work supplemented with his other papers (Szablya-kard 
fegyverváltás. A kétélű kardos 10–11. századi magyar sírok 
keltezéséhez, 1990), and with my own research. 
Using the programming language and software (R) for 
statistical computing, we have had the opportunity to interpret size 
measurement data of sabers, altogether of 140 finds. With the help of 
statistical analysis, we have established new categories defined by 
exact numeric values instead of the old system, which differentiated 
sabers according to main categories (i.e. short or long). Besides 
correlation calculations and explorative data analysis methods, 
mathematical classification of cluster analysis was an important part 
of the research. 
However, formal features play significant role in classification 
– this is a main reason of the prominent role of hilts in grouping – 
considering the research tendencies of straight bladed sword we can 
notice, that technological features are becoming increasingly 
important factors in defining types. 
In the University of Miskolc, Institute of Physical Metallurgy, 
Metalforming and Nanotechnology with the help of specialists of 
ARGUM we took 6 samples from 4 sabers – blades: Karos-
Eperjesszög grave II/20, Miskolc-Airport grave 5, Unknown saber 
from Herman Ottó Museum (Miskolc), guards: Karos-Eperjesszög 
grave II/5, Miskolc-Repülőtér grave 5 (1–1 samples from both 
endings). 
After preparing the surface – polishing, etching with nithal 
(2%) - the shape and distribution of tissue elements and phases were 
examined with optical microscopy (Zeiss AxioImager M1m). 
Also SEM-EDS analysis was made with scanning electron 
microscopy equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy (Zeiss 
EVO MA10). Some of SEM-pictures were backscattered electron 
images revealing the metallic phases and the slag inclusions (the 
elements with high atomic number produce lighter areas). 
Sampling was significantly limited by how much the object is 
damaged and what level of protection it is entitled to. Usually access 
to such objects with lower quality and with damaged core was 
obtained. Of course, this can be attributed to archaeometallurgical 
methods. It is hopeful for the future that more and more non-
destructive methods are appearing in weapons technology research. 
For the time being, however, the researcher can choose only two 
options from the “archaeometallurgical trinity” (relevant information 
value, affordable price, and non-destructive analysis). 
Examining the technological traces, we sought answers to the 
following questions: 1: Is there any chemical element in the slag 
inclusions (e.g. P, As), that indicates the smelting of bog iron ore? 2: 
What kind of yield of smelting can we estimate on the basis of the 
ratio of /FeO+MnO/:SiO2 in the slag inclusions? 3: Is it possible to 
find the traces of pattern welding, or any other type of welding? 4: Is 
it possible to find the traces of heat treatment that allows conclusions 
to be drawn about the use of the weapons? 
 
III. RESULTS 
Based on the examination of the formal features (like the length of 
blade /Hp/, breadth of blade /Szp/, and length of “elman” /Hf/) and 
spread of weapons, the distribution of types of cross-sections and of 
guards has two focal points in the area. Cross-section type 1 and 
Guard type 1A can be mainly located in the North-Eastern 
Carpathian Basin (primarily Upper-Tisza-region) while Cross-
section  type 2, and Guard type 1B appear more often in the region 
of the Upper-Danube and the northern part of the region between the 
Tisza and the Danube. Guard type 2 appears in the eastern part of the 
Carpathian Basin. Also the examples of the Hp-Szp:C∩Hp-Hf:D 
cluster intersection can be located in the Upper-Tisza-region. 
Average values: Hp: 749mm, Szp: 28,5mm Hf: 207,5mm. 
Based on the metric data and their statistical analysis, a grouping 
regularity can be formulated: Blades belonging to Cross-section type 
2 are longer and thinner than the examples of Cross-section type 1. 
In the case of Cross-section type 1:   1039  SzpHp  
In the case of Cross-section type 2:   1039  SzpHp  
So we can draw conclusions in the case of a fragment, based on 
cross-section and width. 
Cross-sectional type 2 and Guard type 1B are expected to be later 
stages in the development of the saber, however, it is hard to searate 
these groups chronologically. The terminus post quem of Cross-
section type 1 and Guard type 1B (according to the burials with 
sabers and coins) is the first fifth of 10
th
 century (TPQ895/96 – 
918/19). The dating interval of the Guard type 1B is longer, it is not 
evident, that the terminus post quem is later (TPQ895/96–942). This 
question requires the re-examination of the burials with coins and 
weapons. 
 
Based on the archaeometallurgical analyses, the following answers 
can be given to material and technology questions: 1: Various levels 
of P-content can be detected in the examined inclusions (0–2,05%), 
so we can suppose biogenic origin, but these values alone are not 
sufficient to make a safe conclusion on bog iron ore smelting. 2: 
Based on the extremely high Fe-ratio (46,32–71,56%) in the slag 
inclusions of the samples, we can suppose a week yield of smelting. 
We have only one exception: sample 4, its slag inclusion contains the 
highest Si-content (35.56%), and the smallest Fe-content (5,79%). 
Also this is the only blade without P-content inclusions, so it is 
possible that its ore has another origin (but we can also suppose, that 
it is a technological difference). 3: Based on the metallographic 
analysis and the data of archaeometallurgy the saber from 
Gnadendorf, we can notice, that the sabers of this region was made 
from a single material. 4: We have found examples for heat 
treatment by considering martensite in sample 4. 
Metallographic examinations and experiments offer great help in 
reconstructing the chaine opèratoire to provide a more detailed 
picture about technology. 
 
As for the forging technique of sabers, swords have no effect on 
them. In the opposite case we have evidences only for sword hilt 
modifying. 
The independence of saber craft can be proved by the survival of 
light calvary and its weaponry (B. Szabó János: A középkor 
magyarországi könnyűlovassága, 2017). Furthermore, according to 
Regino, Liutprand, Widukind, VI.  Leōn, and Abu al-Ḥasan ʿAlī ibn 
al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī al-Masʿūdī in some cases also melee combat was 
used by 9–10
th
 century Hungarian warriors. 
Based on the difference of cross-section, archaeometallurgical 
investigations, and the reconstructed chaine opèratoire, it is 
doubtful, that swords were reshaped to saber. It is more likely that 
the incoming weapons were sold in the arms trade. Abu'l-Qasim 
Ubaydallah ibn Abdallah ibn Khordadbeh mentions in Kitāb al 
Masālik w’al Mamālik rūs, and rāḏanīya merchants exporting swords 
from Europe. In addition, foreign military elements could have 
influenced the weapon culture of the 9–10
th
 century Carpathian 
Basin not only through the objects but also through the movement of 
the masters or the demands coming from the battlefield experience. 
The change in tactics and related weaponry is most noticeable with 
the appearance of infantry. This can be attributed to the new features 
of state organizations. 
It is also remarkable, that double-edged swords are less regarded as 
the weapon of a limited social level. So we can suppose, that this 
alternative of long bladed weapons was available for wider circle in 
the end of 10
th
 century. 
 
The catalog of the dissertation can be further expanded by more 
detailed examination. Expanding metric data can also help improve 
classification. The question remains: what extent and in what parts 
the blade was heat treated. 
In the relation of the manufacture and use, archaeometallurgy and 
military history play important roles. The results show that the 
research of a historical interaction is also capable of producing a 
scientific interaction. The actual value of the method, however, will 
be determined by the results and feedback of further scientific works.
