An Analysis of the Usage of Probability Markers in Print Advertising of Hygiene and Cleaning Products
Language plays a role in the meaning of consumer products in numerous ways. As a result, while establishing an advertising campaign for any ethnic group, language and media are crucial concerns. Surprisingly, English is being increasingly widely used in print advertising in countries like Indonesia, where English is not the predominant language of communication. This study aims to find the effect of using English and the usage of probability markers in triggering purchase intentions towards hygiene and cleaning related products due to Covid-19. This study adopted the mixed-method approach. The researchers distributed questionnaire adapted from Hornikx et al. (2010) to 150 participants and interviewed 15 people. The results showed that the participants preferred English version ads. In addition, when making an advertisement, advertisers must not only choose the appropriate language, but also the appropriate diction. Then, the participants agree that pledges as probability markers influenced their decision to purchase hygiene and cleaning products. Lastly, while designing advertisements, related to hygiene and cleaning products, the advertiser should pay special attention to the body-copy (writings)
Hearing Your Feedback Loud and Clear: Students’ Voices of Audio Feedback in Virtual Writing Class
There are many growing types of research about technology-supported feedback in English language teaching. Meanwhile, the study investigating audio feedback in virtual writing class during emergency remote teaching is still underexplored. In order to fill the gap, this research aims at investigating students’ perceptions towards audio feedback in virtual writing class. It employs a qualitative research design. Six students were voluntarily interviewed in this study. Furthermore, their writing was also observed. The findings of this study revealed that students view audio feedback positively. They admit that audio feedback is clear, personal, and detailed. Furthermore, students can feel the teaching presence because of the audio feedback. The further implications are discussed in this paper
“Hi, Google! Tell Me A Joke”: How Google Assistant Creates Its Jokes
oai:ojs.pkp.sfu.ca:article/48Artificial intelligent-based application helps people in many ways, one of which telling them jokes. This study aims at (1) investigating the types of jokes on Google Assistant application, and (2) describing linguistic aspects used in the jokes. There were several steps in conducting this study. Firstly, the data of this study were the jokes taken from “tell me a joke” feature on Google Assistant. As many as 58 jokes were collected as the data. Then, the data were coded and analysed based on its linguistic aspects in terms of sounds, meanings, and word formations. After all data were analysed, conclusions were drawn. There are two forms of jokes in this application namely riddle and one liner. In riddle, the jokes are presented in question-answer form, whereas one liner joke only consists of one or two sentences. There are several linguistic aspects in creating the jokes, namely homonyms, minimal pair, substitution of sounds, onomatopoeia, phrase and words with similar pronunciation, idiomatic phrase, addition of sound and word combination. Among those aspects, homonyms are the most frequently utilized in the jokes. Jokes are beneficial for language learners to learn the real use of the language, thus further studies on jokes are suggested.
 
Exploring the Indonesian Nursing Students’ Difficulties in Answering the TOEFL Prediction Test
The TOEFL is a type test known internationally to assess someone’s proficiency in English language. However, many EFL students have problems in doing the TOEFL test so that their score results are still under the minimum score. The aim of this study is to explore the nursing students’ difficulties in answering the TOEFL questions. This study was a descriptive-quantitative study that involved fifty-one nursing students of the Poltekkes Kemenkes Bengkulu. The data of this study were gathered by using a questionnaire in the form of Google form based on Likert’s scale. The results of the study revealed that the level of difficulty experienced by the nursing students in answering the questions on the TOEFL test was in a high category. The listening comprehension section gained the mean score of 3.79, the structure and written expression section gained the mean score of 3.67, and the reading comprehension section gained the mean score of 3.62. Moreover, their difficulties were in a high category for all of the items in the questionnaire. In brief, the difficulties faced by the nursing students show that their English proficiency is still low
Markey’s Denial to Cope Grief in Niven’s All the Bright Places
The object of this study is All the Bright Places (2015), a young adult fiction novel which tells a story about two teenagers and their problems related to their mental illness. The interesting topic which became the main discussion in this study is how the female character of this novel, Violet Markey, using denial as her defence mechanism to cope grief on her sister and boyfriend’s death. To examine this topic, the researchers used descriptive qualitative method. This study found that in order to cope with Markey’s sister death, Markey used self-protective function of denial, while to cope with Finch’s death, her form of denial is by refusing to acknowledge his death
Character Education Analysis Represented in English Textbooks for Secondary School Based on the 2013 Curriculum in Indonesia
This research is focused on content analysis of character education potrayed in English texbooks based on the Indonesia 2013 curriculum to find out the types of character education values in English textbooks and how educational character values were included into English textbooks for secondary schools. In fact, moral degradation among the youth in the modern era is becoming trends. Therefore, in this study, researchers want to focus on content analysis of character education potrayed in English texbooks based on the Indonesia 2013 curriculum based on 18 character values issued by Indonesian government. In this study, the researchers used a content analysis technique under the formula of qualitative research method. The result of the study showed that the total frequency of character value based on first semester that emerged in the textbook 1 gained 73 times or percentage (39%). The value of related to self was the most frequent value with 40 times. Then, it was followed by related to others with 17 times. The values have small proportion are related to nation and additional values; the character not existed in English textbook 1 represented first semester is related to God. The total frequency of character value based on first semester that emerged in the textbook 2 was 115 times or percentage (61%), the value of related to self was the most frequent value with 72 times. The values have small proportion are related to others, related to environment, related to nation, related to good and additional values. These findings lead to the conclusion that the upcoming textbooks should pay attention on the character values official 2013 curriculum for students in secondary school contain a lot of character educatio
Investigating Students’ Perceptions on E-Learning Materials and Tools for English for MICE
Students in vocational higher education find difficulties in joining practical courses, such as English for MICE in post-pandemic era of COVID-19. That course offers students ability to practice and held events in Meeting, Incentive Travels, Conventions, and Exhibitions. Some recent studies have examined that similar problem by using various learning method in English for MICE course. Most of them didn’t mention about the case of students’ perceptions on English for MICE course. This study offers case study that investigate students’ perceptions on e-learning materials and tools for English for MICE course. The research subjects were 20 students, in D-IV English for Tourism Industry, State Polytechnic of Malang. The results of questionnaire showed that e-learning materials and tools are the best solutions for English for MICE course. However, mostly students experienced difficulties about lacks of internet connection, but this problem obviously solved well by lecturers and students in English for MICE course. The implication of this study is that by investigating students’ perceptions on that problem, it can minimize the challenges in teaching English for MICE in post-pandemic era of COVID-19
Assessment and Feedback to Enhance Online English Language Learning
The COVID-19 pandemic has promoted online learning-teaching on a large scale. During the pandemic, English language learners could not complete their learning in the traditional class. To maintain learners learning, most universities have adopted online teaching. Assessment and feedback are critical components of instructional scaffolding, particularly in the online learning environment. These components highlight how English language learners can aid in accomplishing learning objectives and developing self-regulated experiences. This study aimed to explore the design of assessment and feedback of online teaching activities and online teaching processes adopted by English lecturers during the pandemic. The ethnographic case study design is the framework to outline qualitative research. This thematic approach confirms the qualitative researcher’s active participation in identifying assessment and feedback patterns in enhancing English language learners. Given the complexity of assessing and feedback, the study discovered that assessing and feedback could enhance learning English in online situations. These are included the specification of 15 characterizations of the assessment aspect, 15 recommendation elements for conducting the online assessment, and 10 practical online feedback features. The description assessment and feedback remain inextricably and undeniably connected. Online feedback means to be the English lecturers’ reaction to an English learner’s performance.  
Utilizing Teams-Game-Tournament (TGT) to Enhance Students’ Grammatical Understanding in Online Learning Setting
The massive implementation of online learning as a response to the pandemic over these past two years has offered abundant opportunities to explore, discover, and incorporate strategies for its execution and to cope with the possible challenges. Taking this into account, this present study is proposed to find out the effectiveness of an innovative pedagogical strategy namely teams-game-tournament as the type of cooperative learning model to teach grammar in an online learning setting. This study employed a quasi-experimental research design involving ten graders of senior high school (N=56). They come from two groups: the experimental group using teams-game-tournaments and the control group with only the traditional in-class lectures. The results obtained from the t-test using SPSS confirmed that there is a significant difference in students’ grammar scores that were taught using the strategy compared to students’ scores in the control group without the treatment. In order words, the use of the given strategy is more effective to enhance students’ English grammar, particularly in the correlative conjunction understanding
Code Switching in Youtube Content Life About Life in Japan
This research discusses about the code switching about life in Japan in YouTube content. This research aims to describe the types of code switching and the factors behind the speech. The occurrence of code switching in Youtube content seen from the speakers or users, especially if the speech is spoken by mixed-blood speakers, Japanese learners, and native Japanese speakers that learning Indonesian. Researcher uses the theories of code switching types to describe the variety of code switching sentences and factors that cause code switching to describe the cause of utterance. The results of this research indicate that the most widely used type of code switching is code switching in which speakers insert two codes from another language to the target language with more than one sentence of speech. In terms of the factors causing the occurrence of speech, each speaker shifts the code more when the topic of conversation changes into another discussion
