A retrospective cephalometric study on upper airway spaces in different facial types
No full textCraniofacial growth pattern has been correlated with variations in size of the upper airway spaces. The objective of this study was to evaluate the nasopharyngeal, oropharyngeal, and hypopharyngeal airway spaces variations according to the craniofacial growth pattern, by comparing brachyfacial, mesofacial, and dolichofacial in Angle Class I individuals. To measure the spaces, 45 lateral teleradiographs were used and divided into 3 groups per the craniofacial growth pattern, determined by the Tweed cephalometry angular measurements: FMA and Y-axis. To evaluate the airways, sleep apnea cephalometry was used, containing 28 points that compose 14 factors. Three groups were compared relative to each of the 14 sleep apnea cephalometry measurements. Adherence test to the normal curve was performed. For the non-normally distributed data-measurement of the inferior pharyngeal space-the Kruskal-Wallis test was used for comparison between the groups. For the remaining data, the distribution was normal and ANOVA test was used. Statistically significant difference was verified among the groups for the measurement of the median posterior-palatal space, with the difference being pointed out by the post hoc test between the brachyfacial and dolichofacial groups. For the other measurements, there was no statistically significant difference. It could be concluded that there was difference in the median posterior-palatal space measurement, in the oropharynx region, which was reduced for individuals with a dolichofacial pattern181
Vegetarianism and veganism in education : investigation of experiences in the Brazilian school context
No full textOrientador: Alessandra Aparecida ViveiroDissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Faculdade de EducaçãoResumo: O vegetarianismo e o veganismo iniciaram-se desde os tempos remotos e foram ressignificados ao longo dos anos. O vegetarianismo consiste em um regime alimentar e o veganismo um estilo de vida que busca eliminar, na medida do possível e praticável, todas as formas de crueldade e exploração contra os animais. Para um e outro, a alimentação se constitui como importante aspecto. Atualmente, ambos os movimentos vêm ganhando cada vez mais visibilidade, espaço e adeptos na sociedade contemporânea. Deste modo, a escola não está ausente das influências do vegetarianismo e veganismo. Com base nesses pressupostos, desenvolvemos uma pesquisa que tem por objetivo identificar, caracterizar e discutir como os movimentos vegetariano e vegano são incorporados nas escolas e nos sistemas educacionais brasileiros, com foco para a Educação Infantil e os Anos Iniciais do Ensino Fundamental. Para isso, fizemos um levantamento de produções científicas e midiáticas nas redes sociais Facebook e Instagram, além das páginas eletrônicas da Sociedade Vegetariana Brasileira (SVB), Sociedade Vegana e do portal Vista-se, que intitula-se o maior portal vegano da América Latina, almejando prospectar experiências relacionadas à temática de interesse. Na sequência, coletamos documentos sobre as escolas e os sistemas educacionais públicos e privados identificados durante as buscas, que foram analisados para caracterização e discussão sobre cada uma das experiências evidenciadas. Como resultado de análise, constatou-se três tipos de práticas: vegetarianismo e veganismo como alimentação servida aos estudantes; alimentação como oportunidade de estudo sobre a temática com as crianças; o movimento vegano como emancipação e modificação social para um mundo justo e igualitário para todos e todas. Acreditamos que um envolvimento maior com os valores do veganismo, para além da alimentação, possui potencial transformador rumo a uma nova racionalidade que viabilize consciência crítica e contribua na modificação da realidade.Abstract: Vegetarianism and veganism have existed since ancient times and have been reframed over the years. Vegetarianism consists in a food diet and veganism in a way of living that tries to eliminate, as much as possible, all the cruelty and exploration against the animals. For both of them, food is the main aspect. Nowadays, both movements have been gaining more visibility and supporters in contemporary society. Therefore, school is also impacted by the influences of vegetarianism and veganism. Based on that, a research was developed with the intent of characterizing and discussing how the vegetarian and vegan movements are inserted in Brazilian schools and educational systems, focused on Childhood Education and Elementary School. To do that, an investigation was carried out seeking for scientific and midiatic production on Facebook and Instagram, besides websites of Sociedade Vegetariana Brasileira (SVB), Vegan Society and Vista-se, this last one entitles itself as the greatest vegan website of Latin America. Hereafter, documents about schools and educational systems, public and private, identified during the research were collected and analyzed to characterize and discuss each of the experiences. As a result of the analysis, it was observed three kinds of practices: vegetarianism and veganism as food for children; food as an opportunity to study with children; the vegan movement as social emancipation and transformation aiming for an equal and fair world to everybody. Effect of pre-weaning diet on the ruminal archaeal, bacterial, and fungal communities of dairy calves
No full textAt birth, calves display an underdeveloped rumen that eventually matures into a fully functional rumen as a result of solid food intake and microbial activity. However, little is known regarding the gradual impact of pre-weaning diet on the establishment of the rumen microbiota. Here, we employed next-generation sequencing to investigate the effects of the inclusion of starter concentrate (M: milk-fed vs. MC: milk plus starter concentrate fed) on archaeal, bacterial and anaerobic fungal communities in the rumens of 45 crossbred dairy calves across pre-weaning development (7, 28, 49, and 63 days). Our results show that archaeal, bacterial, and fungal taxa commonly found in the mature rumen were already established in the rumens of calves at 7 days old, regardless of diet. This confirms that microbiota colonization occurs in the absence of solid substrate. However, diet did significantly impact some microbial taxa. In the bacterial community, feeding starter concentrate promoted greater diversity of bacterial taxa known to degrade readily fermentable carbohydrates in the rumen (e.g., Megasphaera, Sharpea, and Succinivribrio). Shifts in the ruminal bacterial community also correlated to changes in fermentation patterns that favored the colonization of Methanosphaera sp. A4 in the rumen of MC calves. In contrast, M calves displayed a bacterial community dominated by taxa able to utilize milk nutrients (e.g., Lactobacillus, Bacteroides, and Parabacteroides). In both diet groups, the dominance of these milk-associated taxa decreased with age, suggesting that diet and age simultaneously drive changes in the structure and abundance of bacterial communities in the developing rumen. Changes in the composition and abundance of archaeal communities were attributed exclusively to diet, with more highly abundant Methanosphaera and less abundant Methanobrevibacter in MC calves. Finally, the fungal community was dominated by members of the genus SK3 and Caecornyces. Relative anaerobic fungal abundances did not change significantly in response to diet or age, likely due to high inter-animal variation and the low fiber content of starter concentrate.
