    Committing to an individual: ontological commitment, reference and epistemology

    When we use a directly referential expression to denote an object, do we incur an ontological commitment to that object, as Russell and Barcan Marcus held? Not according to Quine, whose regimented language has only variables as denoting expressions, but no constants to model direct reference. I make a case for a more liberal conception of ontological commitment-more wide-ranging than Quine's-which allows for commitment to individuals, with an improved logical language of regimentation. The reason for Quine's prohibition on commitment to individuals, I argue, is that his choice of regimented language is heavily informed by his holist epistemology, in which objects are introduced via a description of their explanatory role. But non-holists can coherently attempt to commit to individuals using directly referential expressions, modelled in a formal language as constants. While holding on to the insight that a logical language is a helpful medium for ontology, I propose instead a more permissive language of regimentation, one expanded to permit the use of constants to record attempts to commit to individuals, which allows us to make sense of non-holist theories with alternative name-based or name-and-variable-based criteria of ontological commitment as well as Quinean theories1932SI583604COORDENAÇÃO DE APERFEIÇOAMENTO DE PESSOAL DE NÍVEL SUPERIOR - CAPESsem informaçã

    Study of the factors influencing the bioaccessibility of 10 elements from chocolate drink powder

    A risk/benefit assessment of chocolate drink powder has been conducted by evaluating the total contents and the bioaccessibilities of Al, Ba, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, P and Zn. The bioaccessibility was studied considering the type of sample (traditional, light, diet and organic) and the different factors that may affect it, including physical-chemical parameters of the human digestive process (gastric pH, concentration of bile salts and presence of lipase) and the presence of dietary components (phytate, pectin, cellulose and tannin). The bioaccessibility varied greatly according to the sample type, being greater in the diet and organic samples, and on the element being considered (5-12% for Al, 74-120% for Ba, 3-11% for Cd, 5-19% for Cr, 22-74% for Cu, 1-30% for Fe, 47-98% for Mg, 19-59% for Mn, 19-115% for P and 15-31% for Zn). Bile salts concentrations and the presence of dietary components also modify the bioaccessibilities of some of these elements.     Modulation of Candida albicans virulence by bacterial biofilms on titanium surfaces

    Whilst Candida albicans occurs in peri-implant biofilms, its role in peri-implantitis remains unclear. This study therefore examined the virulence of C. albicans in mixed-species biofilms on titanium surfaces. Biofilms of C. albicans (Ca), C. albicans with streptococci (Streptococcus sanguinis, S. mutans) (Ca-Ss-Sm) and those incorporating Porphyromonas gingivalis (Ca-Pg and Ca-Ss-Sm-Pg) were developed. Expression of C. albicans genes associated with adhesion (ALS1, ALS3, HWP1) and hydrolytic enzymes (SAP2, SAP4, SAP6, PLD1) was measured and hyphal production by C. albicans quantified. Compared with Ca biofilms, significant (p<0.05) up-regulation of ALS3, HWP1, SAP2 and SAP6, and hyphal production occurred in biofilms containing streptococci (Ca-Ss-Sm). In Ca-Pg biofilms, down-regulation of HWP1 and SAP4 expression, with reduced hyphal production occurred. Ca-Ss-Sm-Pg biofilms had increased hyphal proportions and up-regulation of ALS3, SAP2 and SAP6.     BackgroundActinic cheilitis (AC) is a potentially malignant lesion diagnosed in the lip of patients chronically exposed to the sun that may give rise to a fully invasive lower lip squamous cell carcinoma (LLSCC). It is known that ultraviolet radiation causes dendritic cells (DCs) depletion in the epidermis, but the role of this cellular population in lip cancer progression remains uncertain. Therefore, this study investigated the distribution of DCs in normal, dysplastic and neoplastic tissues of the lower lip. MethodsThirteen cases of lower lip mucocele, 42 of ACs and 21 of LLSCC were retrieved and original diagnoses confirmed by two oral pathologists, who further classified ACs as low- and high-risk lesions. Immunoreactions against CD1a and CD83 identified immature and mature DCs, respectively. ResultsImmature CD1a+ Langerhans cells (LCs) were significantly decreased in LLSCC when compared to morphologically normal (P 0.05), but ACs demonstrated a lower concentration of CD1a+ LCs than normal epithelium (P 0.05).     Thera-band® elastic band tension: reference values for physical activity

    [Purpose] The aim of this technical note was to report significant differences in the tension forces of the different-sized Thera-band (R) elastic bands (Hygenic Corp.) determined by us versus the manufacturer. [Subjects] Two trained observers performed all measurements. [Methods] The tension force (kilogram-force units) of eight color-coded elastic bands (tan, yellow, red, green, blue, black, silver, and gold) with different resistance levels was measured at 10 different percentages of elongation (25% to 250% with 25% increments) using an electronic elongation gauge tensiometer. [Results] There were significant differences in the tension force of the elastic bands of different colors when compared in pairs (excepting the tan/yellow pair) at 100% and 200% elongation, as determined via one-way analysis of variance. There were no differences in the slopes for the tan versus yellow and green versus blue bands, as determined via linear regression analysis and one-way analysis of variance. Comparison of the tension force values obtained in our study with the reference values of the manufacturer (the t-test applied to the slopes) showed significant differences for five colors (yellow, green, blue, silver, and gold).     Amazonian waters harbour an ancient freshwater ceratomyxa lineage (cnidaria: myxosporea)

    A new species of Ceratomyxa parasitizing the gall bladder of Cichla monoculus, an endemic cichlid fish from the Amazon basin in Brazil, is described using morphological and molecular data. In the bile, both immature and mature myxospores were found floating freely or inside elongated plasmodia: length 304 (196–402) μm and width 35.7 (18.3–55.1) μm. Mature spores were elongated and only slightly crescent-shaped in frontal view with a prominent sutural line between two valve cells, which had rounded ends. Measurements of formalin-fixed myxospores: length 6.3 ± 0.6 (5.1–7.5) μm, thickness 41.2 ± 2.9 (37.1–47.6) μm, posterior angle 147°. Lateral projections slightly asymmetric, with lengths 19.3 ± 1.4 μm and 20.5 ± 1.3 μm. Two ovoid, equal size polar capsules, length 2.6 ± 0.3 (2–3.3) μm, width 2.5 ± 0.4 (1.8–3.7) μm, located adjacent to the suture and containing polar filaments with 3–4 turns. The small subunit ribosomal DNA sequence of 1605 nt was no more than 97% similar to any other sequence in GenBank, and together with the host, locality and morphometric data, supports diagnosis of the parasite as a new species, Ceratomyxa brasiliensis n. sp. Maximum parsimony and maximum likelihood analyses showed that C. brasiliensis n. sp. clustered within the marine Ceratomyxa clade, but was in a basally divergent lineage with two other freshwater species from the Amazon basin.     The soybean trap: challenges and risks for brazilian producers

    Since the 1970s, Brazilian soybean production has grown rapidly, driven by increasing national and international demand and rising prices. Consequently, soybean production has come to be perceived as an attractive opportunity, with the number of farms producing soybean across the country reaching around 240,000 in 2017. However, producers can become trapped by dependencies on moneylenders, traders and input supply companies, facing so-called' agricultural treadmills'. In this study we undertook interviews with individual soybean producers and representatives of trader companies, producers' associations, the processing industry, government and civil society, and used these data to analyze rural production operations related to the soybean supply chain and to interpret how agricultural treadmills persist in this sector. Based on literature review and fieldwork interviews, we found that producers have been able to add value to their products, but some strategies they use to cope with production costs lead them into high-risk situations. Our findings show that, sectoral (e.g., producers' associations) and collective actions (e.g., farmers' buying groups) are a useful strategy for producers to gain influence and bargaining power against transnational companies and input suppliers compared to acting as an individual within the soybean supply chain. Producers were emphatic that the current soybean business is now much more than just farming activities, and that education and training are highly valuable and important strategies to keep producers in the soybean business and out of traps. These findings are important given the neoliberal context in which individual producers find themselves and which presents challenges that alone they can do little to change. Esta dissertação teve por finalidade analisar como a Geografia pode contribuir no processo de inclusão de Estudantes Público Alvo da Educação Especial, a partir da abordagem Sociocultural. Buscou-se entender como a paisagem pode ser encarada como suporte para a percepção do ambiente. Estes aspectos trazem novas possibilidades para o entendimento do conceito de paisagem, oportunizando ao professor criar mecanismos metodológicos e didáticos para a inclusão de estudantes com algum tipo de deficiência, considerando a capacidade de sentir o ambiente para além do que é observável. A abordagem qualitativa possibilitou entender fenômenos sociais e propor soluções, incluindo em suas etapas a análise e levantamento bibliográfico referente aos temas pesquisados e observação participante. Os resultados estabeleceram uma discussão centrada na importância da promoção de um conhecimento que valorize as necessidades e potencialidades dos estudantes, para que também construam seus saberes e o ensino seja significativo, em aulas e atividades de campo que possam se apresentar como uma importante ferramenta para a construção de práticas inclusivas. Ao oferecer algumas possibilidades para promover a inclusão por meio de práticas de ensino de Geografia e para a formação docente com um viés inclusivo, esta proposta permitiu que os estudantes desenvolvessem competências, habilidades cognitivas, afetivas e sociais, dando-lhes condições de serem incluídos no âmbito educacional e socialAbstract: The inclusion of students with disabilities in mainstream schools has been the subject of major discussions in the educational field and is a reality, making it necessary for the school to prepare to receive these students in order to help them in learning. The purpose of this dissertation was to analyze how Geography can contribute to the inclusion process of Students Targeted by Special Education, from the Sociocultural approach. We sought to understand how the landscape can be seen as a support for the perception of the environment. These aspects bring new possibilities for understanding the concept of landscape, giving the teacher the opportunity to create methodological and didactic mechanisms for the inclusion of students with some type of disability, considering the ability to feel the environment beyond what is observable. The qualitative approach made it possible to understand social phenomena and propose solutions, including in its stages the analysis and bibliographic survey regarding the researched subjects and participant observation. The results established a discussion centered on the importance of promoting knowledge that values the needs and potential of students, so that they also build their knowledge and teaching is meaningful, in classes and field activities that can present themselves as an important tool for the building inclusive practices.
