    Get PDF

The scenario for this paper is the combined sanitary and political crisis that Brazil has been facing in these unprecedented times of the COVID-19 pandemic. The country is ideologically polarized and this polarization has been enhanced in the last year and a half in Bolsonaro’s government. A bleak period characterized by a way of governing that Silva (2020) names “pragmatics of chaos” due to denialism (even of the very pandemic) and to the neoliberal values cherished by a radical right-wing that supports the President and backs the discontinuation of important public policies, mainly those directed towards minoritized groups and environmental protection. Having in mind such a scenario, and amidst the societal bewilderment and inaction regarding the President’s contradictory actions towards democracy, we chose to focus on a rare event of direct resistance featured by a migrant of Haitian origin, who told in the face of the president what maybe many Brazilians had not dared to say. What is of interest here is that this performance, recorded on a mobile phone, and posted as a tweet, went viral, and gave rise to a hashtag - #acaboubolsonaro [ItsOverBolsonaro] - that is still alive seven months later. With a focus on the man’s performance of resistance and its entextualization on social media, we analyze his discourse and the impacts of his positioning. In the analysis, we try to retrace some of the threads traversed by the hashtag in two Twitter accounts and some of the reverberations on Instagram. We also discuss how the discursive thread of the postings weaves a metareflexive fabric about the man’s performance. We see this meta-reflection as an acknowledgment of another praxis that we have called ‘pragmatics of resistance’59319661994CONSELHO NACIONAL DE DESENVOLVIMENTO CIENTÍFICO E TECNOLÓGICO - CNPQ311870/2015-5O cenário para este artigo é a combinada crise sanitária e política que o Brasil vem enfrentando nesses tempos sem precedentes de pandemia de COVID-19.

Controversies in pathologization and counterdiscourses in aphasia and childhood

Por fim, apresentamos experimentos com a linguagem, específicos para as modificações da linguagem na afasia e para crianças às voltas com a patologização, logo em sua escrita inicial491378396The objective of the text is to continue the study of the relationship between aphasia and child language, analyzing, on one hand, controversies available on the Internet about aphasia and childhood, and proposing, on the other hand, counterdicourses to assess and follow aphasics and children with difficulty in starting reading and writing. The speech and writing data of aphasics and children confirm Roman Jakobson’s classical hypothesis and show that the between aphasia and child language occurs at various levels of linguistic analysis, guided by meaning and discursive context. Finally, we present experiments with language, specific for language modifications in aphasia and for children who are dealing with pathologization in their initial writin

Ideologies about english as the language of science in Brazil

    No full text
This article discusses rationalizations in the Brazilian scientific community about a stretch of language that is idealized as the ‘language fit for science’. In decoupling linguistic structures from the consequential whole of language practices, metadiscourses about the scaling up of science in Brazil (that is, its movement away from a national scale and towards English‐language audiences) reduce power dynamics, institutional hierarchies, and global inequities to a flat, harmonious space and homogenous time where science supposedly unfolds. Although recent scholarship has produced empirical evidence that contemporary transcultural flows and encounters produce hybrid communicative resources and transidiomatic recombinations, these creolized idioms are largely ignored in ideologies of the language of science. While this process of extracting an idealized ‘standard’ from the realm of diversity and recombination is not new, the resulting anxieties and insecurities among those affected by pressures for going upscale are renewed, and should be critically assessedCONSELHO NACIONAL DE DESENVOLVIMENTO CIENTÍFICO E TECNOLÓGICO - CNPQ303669/2018-7; 305975/2017-

Rapid and non-destructive determination of quality parameters in the ‘Tommy Atkins’ mango using a novel handheld near infrared spectrometer

    No full text
The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of a new handheld ultra-compact near infrared (NIR) spectrometer, based on the linear-variable filter (LVF) technology for rapid and non-destructive quality control analysis of the 'Tommy Atkins' mango. Multivariate calibration models were built using the Partial Least Squares (PLS) regression method to determine soluble solids (SS), dry matter (DM), titratable acidity (TA) and pulp firmness (PF). Different spectral pre-processing techniques were tested. Coefficient of determination and root mean square errors of prediction (RMSEP) values were, respectively: 0.92 and 0.55 degrees Brix for SS, 0.67 and 0.51% for DM, 0.50 and 0.17% citric acid for TA, 0.72 and 12.2 N for PF. The predictive models allowed monitoring physico-chemical changes in each fruit during ripening. The results show the feasibility of using the new NIR handheld spectrometer to determine quality parameters in the 'Tommy Atkins' mango197B12071214CONSELHO NACIONAL DE DESENVOLVIMENTO CIENTÍFICO E TECNOLÓGICO - CNPQCOORDENAÇÃO DE APERFEIÇOAMENTO DE PESSOAL DE NÍVEL SUPERIOR - CAPESFUNDAÇÃO DE AMPARO À CIÊNCIA E TECNOLOGIA DO ESTADO DE PERNAMBUCO - FACEPEFUNDAÇÃO DE AMPARO À PESQUISA DO ESTADO DE SÃO PAULO - FAPESPsem informaçã

Delivery system for mefenamic acid based on the nanocarrier layered double hydroxide: Physicochemical characterization and evaluation of anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive potential

    No full text
Purpose: The anionic form of the drug mefenamic acid intercalated into the nanocarrier layered double hydroxide (LDH-Mef) was evaluated by anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive assays. Methods: The LDH-Mef material was characterized by a set of physicochemical techniques, which was supported by Density Functional Theory calculations. The pharmacological effects of LDH-Mef (40 wt% of drug) were evaluated by hemolytic, anti-inflammatory activity and antinociceptive assays. Results: In vivo assays were conducted for the first time in order to assess the LDH-Mef potential. The hemolytic effects decreased for the intercalated Mef as demonstrated by the higher tolerated hemolytic concentration (1.83 mM) compared to mefenamic acid (MefH), 0.48 mM. Pretreatment of animals with MefH or LDH-Mef reduced carrageenan-, dextran sulfate- and PGE(2)-induced paw edema. MefH or LDH-Mef also decrease total leucocytes and neutrophil counts of the peritoneal cavity after inflammation induction with carrageenan. In the nociception model, oral pretreatment with LDH-Mef reduced mechanical hypernociception carrageenan-induced after 3-4 h and also the number of writhings induced by acetic acid. Conclusions: This work shows the increase of the anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive potential of the drug confined into the LDH, as well as, its hemolytic effect58629638CONSELHO NACIONAL DE DESENVOLVIMENTO CIENTÍFICO E TECNOLÓGICO - CNPQCOORDENAÇÃO DE APERFEIÇOAMENTO DE PESSOAL DE NÍVEL SUPERIOR - CAPESFUNDAÇÃO DE AMPARO À PESQUISA DO ESTADO DE SÃO PAULO - FAPESPsem informaçã

Este texto registra os principais achados referentes à primeira etapa da pesquisa90133Indigenous school education is, in addition to formal instruction, one of the instruments in the struggle of indigenous peoples for the recovery of their ancestral lands. Estimation in the skew-normal hyperbolic distribution : EM algorithm

    No full text
Estudos de simulação e aplicação em um conjunto de dados reais são considerados com a finalidade de avaliar a metodologia propostaAbstract: The role played by asymmetric multivariate distributions with heavy tailed can be noted by the different applications it has found in statistics. In this context the generalized hyperbolic distributions stand out for their applications in the area of finance (Barndorff-Nielsen, 1997 e Socgnia & Wilcox, 2014). In this paper we present a study of maximum likelihood estimation for the parameters of generalized hyperbolic distribution, which is based on the skew-normal distribution and generalized inverse Gaussian distribution (GIG), proposed by Vilca et al. (2014). This resulting distribution has a stochastic representation that allows to derive properties for the proposed distribution from the properties of the skew-normal distribution and GIG distribution. The main objective of this work is to develop an EM algorithm to obtain the maximum likelihood estimates of the model parameters, following the ideas of Dempster et al. (1977), the direct maximization of the likelihood function is extremely difficult because of the complexity of the likelihood function. Simulation studies and a real data set are considered in order to evaluate the proposed methodologyMestradoEstatísticaMestre em EstatísticaCAPE

Assessing invertebrate herbivory in human-modified tropical forest canopies

    Get PDF
Studies on the effects of human-driven forest disturbance usually focus on either biodiversity or carbon dynamics but much less is known about ecosystem processes that span different trophic levels. Herbivory is a fundamental ecological process for ecosystem functioning, but it remains poorly quantified in human-modified tropical rainforests. Here, we present the results of the largest study to date on the impacts of human disturbances on herbivory. We quantified the incidence (percentage of leaves affected) and severity (the percentage of leaf area lost) of canopy insect herbivory caused by chewers, miners, and gall makers in leaves from 1,076 trees distributed across 20 undisturbed and human-modified forest plots in the Amazon. We found that chewers dominated herbivory incidence, yet were not a good predictor of the other forms of herbivory at either the stem or plot level. Chewing severity was higher in both logged and logged-and-burned primary forests when compared to undisturbed forests. We found no difference in herbivory severity between undisturbed primary forests and secondary forests. Despite evidence at the stem level, neither plot-level incidence nor severity of the three forms of herbivory responded to disturbance. Synthesis. Our large-scale study of canopy herbivory confirms that chewers dominate the herbivory signal in tropical forests, but that their influence on leaf area lost cannot predict the incidence or severity of other forms. We found only limited evidence suggesting that human disturbance affects the severity of leaf herbivory, with higher values in logged and logged-and-burned forests than undisturbed and secondary forests. Additionally, we found no effect of human disturbance on the incidence of leaf herbivoryCOORDENAÇÃO DE APERFEIÇOAMENTO DE PESSOAL DE NÍVEL SUPERIOR - CAPES001/1548102; 001/88882.327895/2019-0
