    Enhancing Reading Comprehension through Collaborative Strategic Reading

    This study aims at improving learners’ reading comprehension through collaborative strategic reading. This study is implemented in the first semester of the accounting study program of Universitas Muhammadiyah Ponorogo. The investigator got two matters in the teaching and learning of learners in the first semester: (1) The learners’ attainment scores were poor in reading skills. (2) The English lecturer generally recited the story first and then he just requested the learners to go over after him. To overcome these problems, the researcher applied the classroom action research design. The subject of this research is class A consisting of 30 students. The researcher utilized some instruments such as an observation, checklist, field notes, and reading comprehension tests. The result shows that the students’ achievement score improved from 30% (9 students) of 30 students in the preliminary study to 53.3% (16 students) in Cycle 1 and then improved to 77% (23 students) in Cycle 2. From this, It can be concluded that the students could understand the texts comprehensively and they found a progressive enhancement in their attainment scores in reading comprehension

    Promoting Students’ Mastery of Vocabulary in Descriptive Text through the Implementation of Semantic Mapping Strategy

    The students in SMPN 1 Nglames had difficulties memorizing English vocabularies and their meaning, and the problem affects their motivation to follow the class. Thus, implementing the right strategy to teach vocabulary is needed to address the issues. Previous studies affirmed that semantic mapping becomes an effective strategy for teaching vocabulary; it helps students memorize, understand, and use vocabulary more quickly. Therefore, this study aimed at implementing a semantic mapping strategy to improve the eighth graders' vocabulary mastery at SMPN 1 Nglames in the academic year of 2019/2020. Classroom Action Research consisting of four steps; planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting was used. The implementation was conducted in two cycles since the criteria of success have not been achieved yet in cycle one. In cycle one, there were only 68% of students gained ten points on their vocabulary scores and only 60% actively engaged. However, in cycle two it improved. 88% students gained ten points on their vocabulary score, and 73% students were actively engaged during the implementation of semantic mapping. Therefore, it can be concluded that semantic mapping successfully improved the students' mastery of vocabulary and increased their involvement

    Perceived Instructional Supervision Practices, Professional Learning Communities Practices, And School Performance in The Division of Eastern Samar

    Instructional supervision is deemed effective way to support professional growth and competency and has been identified as an integral component of staff development while Professional Learning Communities (PLC) is believed to be a more effective way of continuing professional growth and development among its staff focused on the academic performance of learners. This study was based on determining the instructional supervision practices based on its four (4) dimensions, the professional learning communities practices based on five (5) dimensions and the school performance based on the quality parameter of School-Based Management (SBM) of the twenty-two (22) central schools of the Eastern Samar Division. Results revealed that the instructional supervision practices are perceived by the principals and the teachers to be “highly practiced.” Professional learning communities’ practices are likewise perceived by both respondents to be “very highly practiced.” Test on significant difference indicated that there is no significant difference in both the instructional supervision practices and professional learning communities’ practices as perceived by the elementary school principals and their respective teachers. Generally, none of the schools investigated have satisfied and surpassed the quality standards for school –based management as only more than one-half of the school population investigated fall under “moving towards mastery” level

    Developing English Teaching Instruction Based on Islamic Values in Non-Formal Education for The Children of Indonesia

    One of the primary goals of studying English is to improve one's capacity to communicate in English. Islamic-based English classes for children at a local Mosque are ideal since they are provided with Islamic-based English materials derived from Islamic principles and tailored to the needs of Muslim youngsters while learning a second language. The present study aims to investigate an Islamic-based language learning instruction suitable for children in a non-formal setting. The study employs a qualitative research approach which observes and surveys Indonesian language and religious teachers to develop a suitable model for children in an informal setting. The results of the study revealed a means to enhance knowledge about Islam, while learning English as a tool of communication. The following conclusions can be taken from the stated results and discussions; (1) the planning and implementation of Islamic-based English language instruction in non-formal setting have not been optimally implemented thus far therefore the study provided an Islamic-based language instruction suitable for children, (2) educators require innovation in planning and implementing authentic learning for children since they are characterized by their playful nature and learn best by considering such nature, and (3) the foundations of Islam are best taught in early childhood, hence should be prioritized as the content material of their learning

    Perceptions on the Use of Movies and Multimodal Aspects for Teaching Conversational Competence to Porter Students

    This study addresses these following questions: (1) How are the students’ and teachers’ perceptions toward the use of movies to teach conversational competence to porter students in a vocational high school?; (2) How are the students’ and teachers’ perceptions toward the use of movies to facilitate the students’ understanding of verbal and non-verbal conversational competence in the target situation of the job they will encounter as porters?; and (3) How can multimodal aspects help the students to master the conversational competence needed to become porters as reflected on the movies used in this study? This study employs descriptive qualitative design. The results show that movies are perceived to improve the conversational competence of porter students in a vocational high school. Movies facilitate the students’ understanding of verbal and non-verbal conversational competence in the target situation of the job they will encounter as a porter. The multimodal aspects help the students to master the conversational competence needed to be a porter as reflected on the movies. Therefore, movies along with their multimodal aspects are worthy for teaching conversational competence to porter students

    Training on the Use of Basic English for tourism drivers in South Sulawesi aims to improve English language skills for each trainee. This is relevant to tourism development which is one of the development sectors currently being promoted by the government. South Sulawesi has various tourism potentials, including natural and cultural attractions. More and more foreign tourists visit this area and they are guests who must be served well, therefore participants must be able to communicate in English with the tourists, so that tourists feel happy, but the fact is that there are still many tourism drivers who cannot communicate in English and they only use gestures, even though they have a big share and contribution to the development of tourism. During the English training, the participants were stimulated using lectures, role plays, question and answer and demonstrations. Training activities for tourism drivers are carried out for 2 and a half months. The English materials provided include various conversations and vocabulary which include: Alphabet, Parts of Speech, Countries & Nationalities, at the hotel, at the bank / money changer, places & direction, at the post office, at the tourist objects and so on. This training also produces training modules that are printed and distributed to all participants. Although it is still in simple form, it is hoped that this module will be useful for further training. This community service activity can be concluded that it has been successfully implemented, this is evidenced by the suitability of the material with the needs, active participation and high motivation of the participants who are expected to provide maximum service and indirectly introduce and promote tourism potential in South Sulawesi, according to With the target to be achieved from this training, determine the quality of public transportation services through tourism drivers so that they can have intensive conversations with both domestic and foreign tourists

    The Networked Smart Gadgets and Their Role(s) in Enhancing Learning Autonomy in Higher Education’s EFL Context

    The present study explores the perceptions of EFL teachers in higher education on the role of handheld networked devices in promoting autonomous learning. In this project 43 male teachers from King Abdulaziz University (KAU) and the University of Jeddah (UJ) in Saudi Arabia (KSA) responded to a survey. Qualitative data, on the other hand, was gathered through a silent interview where informants answered five open-ended questions related to study’s research questions. The findings revealed the participants value the usefulness of smartphones in enhancing autonomy in language learning. They were also of the view that smartphones have beneficial characteristics when used in actual classroom. In addition, the results show that most of the participants are for a purposeful and guided integration of this type of technology in order to help learners develop the required linguistic and extra-linguistic skills. Equally important was the finding that use the of smartphones along well-developed L2 learning applications in language learning cannot replace the teachers’ vital and crucial role in the whole learning process

    Teacher Talk: Student’s Perception and Expectation

    Teacher talk undoubtedly makes a certain factor whether the class will meet objectives of teaching and learning process or not. This research investigated (1) students’ perception towards teacher talk that happened during the teaching and learning process, and (2) students’ ideal expectations about their English teacher. This was a descriptive qualitative research. One English teacher and one class of first year senior high students were engaged in the research. The data of this research were collected from transcribed-classroom video recording and interview to some students. The results indicated that (1) students’ perception towards teaching style, such as teaching method, motivating, giving feedback were almost negative and (2) students’ ideal expectations that an English teacher should be more effective, efficient interactive and creative for creating more interesting classroom atmosphere.  Keywords: Teacher Talk, Perception, Expectatio

    DYADIC ESSAY TECHNIQUE IN IMPROVING THE STUDENTS EXPLANATION TEXT

    Explanation text is one of genre texts that is learnt and needed to be mastered by SMA students. Dyadic Essay Technique was ere considered useful to increase the students’ skills in writing explanation text. This study implemented classroom action research and the subject of this research was class XI MIPA 1 SMAN 2 Maros, which consisted of 32 students. The study was focused on examining the students in improving content and organization in writing explanation text. The improvement of the students’ achievement in writing content and organization was shown by the students’ scores in D-test (50 and 55.7), Cycle I (60.3 and 60), and Cycle II (81.1 and 71.).     Motivating EFL Learners to Write Using Padlet Application

    E- learning is a system or concept of education that utilizes information technology in teaching and learning. One of them is Padlet, which is an internet site that allows people and other users to collaborate on text, photos, links or other content. Each of these collaborative spaces called a “wall” that can be used as a personal bulletin board. Tecahers and companies generally use Padlets to encourage creative multimedia conversation and exchange of opinions. So, this media is expected to be useful for teachers and students in narrative writing learning class. This study is the quasi experimental research that aimed to know the effect and the correlation of the implementation of Padlet to the students’ achievement and motivation in writing. The implementation Padlet as independent variables and the students’ achievement and motivation in writing as a dependent variable. The population in this research is all second grade students in one of senior high school at Makassar that consist of eight classes. One class took as a control group and one class as an experiment group through cluster random sampling technique. The data of the research was obtained by the study results test on the subject of the velocity reaction for pre-test and post-test and questionnaire. Based on analysis of inferential statistics for writing achievement, the P = 0.001, and for motivation, the P = 0,012 and it less than = 0,05 was obtained, it is means that the implementation Padlet is significantly influence to the students’ motivation and achievement in writing of the second grade senior high school students’ on the material subject of writing
