    IDENTIFYING VOCABULARY OF GRADE VIII STUDENTS AT SMPN 19 PALU

    The objective of this research aims at finding out the students’ vocabulary at the grade VIII grade of SMPN 19 Palu. This research was conducted through a quantitative research design in which the results were tabulated and described. Total students were 23, based on the calculation, it is found that seven students’ score belong to the excellent category (30.43%) as the student obtained final scores ranges in 95-100; six students’ scores belong to the very good category (26.09%) as their final scores ranges in 91-94; five students’ scores belong to the good category (21.74%) as these students obtained final scores ranges in 81-90; three students belong to the fair category (13.04%) because they obtained final scores ranges in 75-80, and two students belong to the poor category (8.70%) because they obtained final scores ranges in 40-74 or below the passing grade. In conclusion, the students’ vocabulary (88.04) falls into good category. Most of the students have sufficient vocabulary when taking the test. On the other hand, there are also some students still lack of vocabulary. This was due to lack of motivation in learning English

    The objective of this research is to find the effect of problem-based learning to the speaking ability of the tenth grade students at SMK Muhammadiyah 1 Palu. This research employed experimental research of quasi-experimental design. The samples were the students of X Farmasi as the experimental group and the students of X TKJ A  as the control group. They were selected using convenience sampling technique. The data were collected through pretest and posttest analyzed by using t-test formula to compare the mean score of the experimental and control groups. The result of the data analysis shows that t-table (1.968) higher than t-value (0.96), so the hypothesis is rejected. It means problem-based learning has no effect significantly to the students speaking ability. That  caused by several factors such as situation, teaching implementation, and students participation

    PERCEPTION ON THE USE OF ZOOM IN SPEAKING CLASS OF THE THIRD YEAR STUDENTS AT TADULAKO UNIVERSITY

    This study aims to know students' perceptions on the use of zoom in speaking class as an alternative solution. Whether the use of zoom as a media of online learning in speaking class is perceived positive or negative during pandemic eras of covid-19. The subjects of this research were 47 students of class 2019, the academic year 2021–2022, at Tadulako University of English Education Study Program. The research was mix method research with embedded design. The instruments used to collect data are questionnaires and interviews. The results of data analysis show that the use of zoom in speaking class perceived negatively by the student, there are many aspects influenced such as: the use of zoom application in speaking class could not fulfill the evaluation aspects of speaking skills itself, instability of internet connection interfere in the midst of knowledge transfer, financial problem in purchasing internet package, and students lack of initiative in upgrading their speaking achievement. However, there are also some positive perception that is found in this study regarding the use of zoom as a media of learning. The students agreed that the use of zoom application is helpful and could help the student learn autonomously which change their learning habit and support students to be actively engaged during speaking class. This implies that the use of the zoom application is not appropriate to be use in speaking classes. In addition, students agree that the zoom application cannot help them improve their speaking skills

    CORRELATION BETWEEN VOCABULARY MASTERY AND READING COMPREHENSION OF THE TENTH GRADE

    The purpose of this research is to find out the correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension of the tenth Grade students of SMAN 14 Sigi. This research used quantitative with correlational approach. The sample was 42 students which was taken by using all population sampling/all sampling technique. The instruments used to collect the data were the vocabulary and reading comprehension test in multiple choices form. All the data gained in this research were analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Formula. The result shows that the obtained r value is 0.703. it is categorized in “Substantial” correlation. It indicated that there is positive correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension of the tenth grade students of SMAN 14 Sigi. Vocabulary contributes significantly to their reading comprehension. When they mastered the vocabulary, it will be easier for them to comprehend the reading. In the other words, vocabulary affect the reading comprehension and vice versa

    USING TUTORIAL VIDEO TO IMPROVE WRITING SKILLS OF THE NINTH GRADE STUDENTS OF MTS ALKHAIRAT LUMBUMAMARA DONGGALA

    The objective of this research is to find out whether the use of tutorial video can improve writing skills of the ninth grade students of MTs Alkhairat Lumbumamara Donggala or not. This research applied a pre-experimental research design. The sample was selected by using total sampling technique. They were 21 students of MTs Alkhairat Lumbumamara Donggala. This research was held in six meetings involved pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The data were collected by using writing test administered twice as pre-test and post-test. The finding showed that the mean score for pre-test was 62.26 while the mean score of post-test was 71.69. The results of data analysis revealed that the value of the t-counted (5.46) was higher than the value of the t-table (1.73) by applying a significant level of 0.05 with a degree of freedom (df) 21 (n-1). It means that the hypothesis is accepted. It indicates that the effect of using tutorial video is significant. In addition, the implication of this finding is can be concluded that using tutorial video was effective to teach writing procedure text because tutorial video can helped to practice their idea, also It helps the teachers transfer the materials that related to the lesson. It can give more detailed information about the object in the content. It could give imagination about the content of the tutorial video that is related to the materials

    AN ANALYSIS OF THE USE OF SOCIO-AFFECTIVE STRATEGY IN TEACHING SPEAKING ENGLISH

    This study was conducted through Library Research method which describes the implementation of socio-affective strategy in teaching speaking English. The aim of this study is to describe the steps on the implementation of socio-affective strategy to encourage students in teaching speaking English. The data sources were taken from scientific writing on the implementation of socio-affective strategy from 5 scientific writings. The results reveal that in using socio-affective strategies, the teacher or lectures used six steps of strategies such as reducing students’ anxiety, encouraging themselves to speak, controlling emotion, asking question, cooperating with others, and empathizing with others based on Oxford (1990). The students definitely have positive response toward the use of socio-affective strategy in teaching speaking English. They thought that socio-affective strategies is possible help them to enhance their ability, motivation, and confidence in speaking skill. It is concluded that using Socio-Affective Strategies in teaching speaking English is effective to increase students’ speaking skill. In other words, differences in the teaching procedures do not negatively impact the students speaking ability.the teaching procedures do not negatively impact the students speaking ability

    THE IMPLEMENTATION OF CIRC IN IMPROVING STUDENTS’ WRITING SKILL

    The purpose of this research is to know whether the implementation of CIRC in improving writing skill of the eight grade students of SMP Negeri 4 Palu. The researcher applied quasi experimental research design. The purposive sampling technique was selected in this research to draw the sample. The samples were VIII Manggis as the experimental group and VIII Cempedak as the control group were the number of students were 35. The test which question form was used as the instrument in gathering the data. The data gathered were analyzed statically. The pretest was given to experimental and control group before the treatments were given. After that, the experimental group got the treatment while the control group did not receive any treatment.the posttest was given to both groups. The pretest mean score of the experimental group 39,34 and the control group was 51.08. while,the posttest mean score of the experimental group was 79,78 and the control group was 71,03. After analyzing the data,it is found out that the t-counted value (2,04) was greater than t-table value (1,01) by applying 0,05 level of significance and 30 degree of freedom(df). Based on the result of the research, it is concluded that the hypothesis is accepted. It means, that the implantation of CIRC technique can improve students writing skill at SMP Negeri 4 Palu

    AN ANALYSIS OF THE TEACHER’S COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES IN TEACHING ENGLISH

    This research aims to find out the types of teacher’s communication strategies and the dominant strategy used by English teachers in teaching English at SMA Lab school Untad Palu. This research design was qualitative study, more especially descriptive qualitative approach. The subject of this research was the English teachers of SMA Lab school Untad Palu. In collecting the data, the researcher used observation and interview. The data were analyzed by using Tarone's Taxonomy. This study showed that the communication strategies used by the teacher were: 46% language switching, 27% literal translation, 14% circumlocution, 8% appealing for assistance and 6% approximation. Based on the result, the most frequent communication strategies is language switching which is found 17 times. This is due to the fact that students still have limited English knowledge, and the teacher adapts the situation by following them using a lot of L1 in order to make it easier for them to learn English. Thus, this finding may imply that English teacher is expected to use and select the effective strategies to overcome the communication problem in the classroom

    The objectives of this research are (1) to find out the strategies that the English teachers use in teaching reading comprehension at SMP Labschool Palu, (2) to find out the reasons why the English teachers chose the strategies in teaching reading comprehension. The subject of this research all the English teachers at SMP Labschool Palu. This research was descriptive qualitative research. The technique of collecting data were questionnaire and interview. The researcher analyzed the data by using descriptive qualitative research. The result of this research showed that there were five strategies mostly used by the English teachers in teaching reading comprehension to be applied in the classroom. There were (monitoring comprehension, recognizing story structure, question answer relationship, graphic and semantic organizers, and summarizing). Based on the analysis of interview to the teachers, those strategies can help the teachers because the students more active and the students could exchange their opinion with their friends

    TEACHERS’ PERCEPTION ON VOCABULARY TEACHING TECHNIQUES AT SMAN 14 SIGI

    The aim of this research is to find out the techniques used by the teachers in teaching vocabulary at SMA Negeri 14 Sigi and to find the students’ responses toward the teachers’ tecniques in teaching vocabulary at SMA Negeri 14 Sigi. This study employed descriptive qualitative research. The research instruments used to collect the data were interview and questionnaire. The findings show that there are two English teachers in SMA Negeri 14 Sigi, the first teacher (Y) used three techniques in teaching vocabulary: jumble word, making a match and games. Meanwhile the second teacher (E) used two techniques in teaching vocabulary: using picture and using video. The teacher used those techniques to improve students’ vocabulary mastery. The teacher can give the material clearly to the students by using those techniques. Based on the questionnaire, mostly the students were interested in learning by used that techniques. so can be seen if they enjoy the teaching learning process of English. The implication of this findings is the teacher needs to use other techniques that is interesting in teaching learning process and also use the other media to support teaching learning process
