DEVELOPING SPEAKING SKILL OF THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS THROUGH SHORT CONVERSATION
The objective of the research is to investigate whether or not the application of Short Conversation Technique improve the speaking skill of the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Palasa. Additionally, this research was conducted through quasi experimental research design in which the samples of the research were grades VIII B and VIII C. The obtained data of this research were analyzed statistically in order to find out the significant difference between two groups on the posttest after the treatment using Short Conversation given to the experimental group. It was found that the mean scores of both the experimental and control groups on the posttest are respectively 75.56 and 61.45. Furthermore, referring to the ttable value of df 46 (24+24-2) by applying 0.05 level of significance on one-tailed test, it is found that the tcounted value of this research (6.1) is higher than the ttable value (1.68). On top of that, the application of Short Conversation Technique can improve the speaking skill of the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Palasa
THE USE OF EVERYONE IS A TEACHER HERE METHOD TO IMPROVE STUDENTS’ SPEAKING SKILL
The objective of this research is to investigate whether or not the students’ speaking ability can improve through the Everyone is A Teacher Here Method in teaching speaking skill of tenth grade students at SMA Negeri 5 Palu. This research applies quasi experimental design, that used two classes, they are experimental class and control class. The research population was the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Palu which is consisted of 325 students. The samples were selected by purposive sampling technique and it was 17 students of X Mipa 6a and 16 students of X Mipa 6b. The instruments that was used to collect the data was tests. The tests include pre-test and post-test, with the pre-test mean score 35.29 for experimental class and 35.63 for control class. While post-test mean score is 45.29 for experimental class and 37.50 for control class. The result of the data is analyzed statistically by applying the t-test formula. The result of the data analysis show that the value of t-counted is 2.45. Applying the degree of freedom 31 (Nx + Ny – 2 = 17 + 16 – 2) and 0.05 level of significance the value of t-table is 1.567. The calculation show that the t-test value is higher than the t-table value. It means that the hypothesis of this research is accepted. It affirms that Everyone is A teacher Here Method can improve students’ speaking skill of the tenth grade students at SMA Negeri 5 Palu
STUDENTS’ PERCEPTION OF NARRATIVE TEXT WRITING DIFFICULTY
The purpose of this study was to determine the difficulties and causes of difficulties for class VIII students in writing narrative texts. This study uses a qualitative research design. The subjects of this study were students of class VIII B, totaling 20 students. In this study, data collection was carried out by distributing questionnaires and interviews. Based on the results of the analysis of questionnaires and interviews, it is known that students have difficulty in writing narrative texts. The difficulty lies in the tenses of the narrative text, the difficulty in placing punctuation and capital letters, and the difficulty in understanding the generic structure of the written narrative. The causes of difficulties in writing narrative texts are lack of vocabulary, lack of writing practice, and the last cause is the obstacles experienced by students when learning online. The solution that the researchers gave to the students was that students were expected to learn more about narrative text material and increase English vocabulary so that students could more easily understand and writing narrative texts
THE EFFECT OF STORYTELLING ON THE ELEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS SPEAKING SKILL
The objective of this research is to find out the effect of storytelling on the development of students’ speaking skill in teaching English. The sample of this research was the eleventh grade students. The research sample were selected using convenience sampling technique. The research applied quasi-experimental design. The data were collected through pretest and posttest. The data were analyzed using t-test to compare mean score of pretest and posttest of experimental and control group. The result showed that the mean differences of the experimental and control group students were (51.70) and (52.75) in pretest. While the posttest were (60.23) and (54.50). Further analysis indicates, t-counted (4.57) is greater than t-table (2.02). The control group got the higher score on pretest while the experimental group got the higher score on posttest which is mean that the hypothesis of the research failed to be rejected. In other word, the use of storytelling to teach English has impact in improving students’ speaking ability
THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING MIND MAPPING TECHNIQUE IN IMPROVING STUDENTS’ WRITING SKILL
The objective of this research is to find out if using mind mapping technique is effective in improving writing skill of grade nine students of SMP Negeri 14 Palu. This research used pre-experimental research design. The sample of this research included 25 students of grade IX Cempaka who were selected by using purposive sampling technique. The instrument of data collection was an essay test that was divided into pre-test and post-test. The results of the data analysis showed that there was a significant difference between the result of the pre-test and the post-test. It indicates by the mean score of both tests results where the mean score of the experimental class significantly increased from 68.27 to 74.93. Based on the result of pre-test and post-test, the researchers found that the value of t-counted is 6.54. By applying a degree of freedom (df) 24 (25-1) and 0.05 level of significance, the researchers found that the value of t-table is 1.711 which showed that the value of t-counted was higher than t-table. It means that the use of mind mapping technique is effective in improving students’ writing skill of grade nine students of SMP Negeri 14 Palu. The implication of this finding is that mind mapping technique can be used in teaching and learning English especially in writing skill
TEACHERS’ STRATEGIES IN TEACHING ENGLISH DURING PANDEMIC COVID-19
At the end of 2019, the world was shocked by the Covid-19 virus in Wuhan, China. This situation requires teaching and learning activities to be carried out at home. This research aims to find out the teachers’ strategies in teaching English during Pandemic Covid-19 at SMP Islam Terpadu Qurrata 'Ayun Palu. This research used qualitative descriptive method. Data collection was carried out with questionnaire and recorded interview procedure. The subjects of the research were two English teachers. Based on the results of the research, the researcher can draw the conclusion that the strategies used by teachers are first is communicative language teaching and many types of applications, second is class management. The strategies used by teachers were quite effective and increased students' interest in learning, so that students are motivated to learn English during the pandemic
IDENTIFYING STUDENTS’ DIFFICULTIES IN READING COMPREHENSION AT SMA MUHAMMADIYAH 1 PALU THROUGH NARRATIVE TEXT
To find out the students’ difficulties in comprehending Narrative text at the tenth grade of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Palu.. This research applied a qualitative research design. The subject of this research were All the students of tenth grade at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Palu and English teacher of tenth grade at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Palu. The techniques used to get the data were questionnaire and an Interview Question. As the final result found from the students’ questionnaire of their reading problem, based on the result of the identification, it was found that students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Palu had difficulties in vocabulary and organization of narrative text, inappropriate reading strategies, lack of motivation, students’ insufficient background knowledge in reading narrative and bad reading process which the most common problem experienced by the students during the reading process was keeping their concentration. The data also supported by the interview with the teacher. Based on the results of the interview with the teacher, the students have problems in reading comprehension. The students’ problems in reading comprehension are: lack of vocabulary, slow reading speed, lack of motivation, and boredom. In case of reading narrative text, the students showed the following problems that they have less comprehension in grammar, lack of competence to find out the main information and specific information in the reading passage, lack of prediction ability or guessing meaning ability as well as lack of background knowledge about the reading passage, specifically on the background story or unfamiliar characters in the story
THE USE OF STUDENT CENTERED-LEARNING (SCL) TO DEVELOP STUDENTS’ SPEAKING SKILL
The objective of this research is to find out the effect of the Student-Centered Learning (SCL) technique to develop the speaking skill of second grade students. This research applied the experimental design of quasi-experiments. The population of this research was the second-grade students that were XI IPA 4 as experimental class and XI IPA 2 as control class. In sample selection, the research sample was selected using the convenience sampling technique to determine the sample. The data were collected through pre-test and post-test. Data were analyzed using t-test to compare the mean score of the pre-test and the post-test from experimental and control groups .The results showed that the mean differences in the classical abilities of the control and experimental class students were 45.1 and 49 in the pre-test, while the post-test were 61.16 and 55.29. Further analysis indicates t-counted (3.85) is greater than the t-tables (1.67)which means that the use of SCL has an impact on students’ speaking achievement. Therefore, the hypothesis of this research is accepted which means there is an improvement in their ability in speaking
THE USE OF ENGLISH SONGS TO IMPROVE STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY MASTERY
The idea of this research was based on the researcher’s experiences. Songs have a big role in helping the researchers to increase the vocabulary mastery so that the purpose of the study was to find out the use of English song in improving students’ vocabulary mastery. In conducting this reseach, researchers took the 2019 batch English students in Tadulako University as the respondent. While the researchers used purposive sampling to take 30 students as the sample. in order to answer the research questions, this study used the questionnaire. The researchers distributed the questionnaire to the students by using Google form. Based on the research findings, it could be seen in the responds of the participants. The participants found that every aspect in songs were able to be used to help them to have better development on their listening skill and even on the language elements (pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar). It can be concluded that English songs can improve the students’ vocabulary mastery
CORRELATION BETWEEN VOCABULARY MASTERY AND READING COMPREHENSION
The purpose of this research is to find out if there is any significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension of the eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 32 Sigi. A correlational research design was used in this research and applied quantitative approach. The researchers used a simple random sampling technique to choose the sample. 36 students were chosen as the sample in this research. The researchers collected data using tests as the primary instrument, which included a vocabulary and reading test. The average score of the vocabulary test was 85 and the reading comprehension test was 80. It revealed that two variables have positive relationship. The Pearson Product Moment result of both tests' data analysis was 0.539. The category was moderate. The value of rtable was 0.329 when the degree of freedom (df) was 36 and the level of significance was 0.05. According to the data, rxy is higher than rtable. It can be concluded that alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. This indicates that there is a positive and significant correlation between the vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension of the eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 32 Sigi
