No full textSector coupling: accelerating renewable energy integration in transport with electric vehicles
Full text linkEnergy and transport have long operated in "silos", creating inefficiencies and conflicting goals. Breaking these silos through sector coupling links electricity and transport, aligning policies and actions to decarbonise mobility while boosting renewable energy use. By substituting fossil fuels with renewable electricity across transport and other end uses, sector coupling strengthens sustainability and accelerates climate goals. Building on prior research on electric vehicles and renewable energy, this paper examines the challenges and opportunities of sector coupling between energy and transport to maximise renewable integration in EVs, advancing a more sustainable and decarbonised transport system. Through a systematic literature review and interviews with relevant stakeholders, it examines various use cases in urban and rural settings, including strategies for controlled charging, bidirectional interactions between vehicles and the power grid, and off-grid solutions. The findings highlight a range of technical, regulatory, and economic challenges but also indicate promising pathways for collaboration among policymakers, industry, and civil society. Ultimately, by bridging the gap between energy and transport, this paper underscores how cross-sectoral approaches can help achieve a more sustainable and low-carbon mobility system
Preliminary impact assessment of an innovative near-zero emissions biomass energy supply system
Full text linkBiomass is an important renewable alternative to fossil energy sources for process heat generation in industrial applications. The Horizon Europe project CBE4I - Clean Bioenergy for Industry (Grant Agreement No. 101122292, Duration: 09/2023 - 08/2026, coordinator: BIOS BIOENERGIESYSTEME GmbH, Graz, Austria) aims to develop a novel highly efficient biomass-based process heat supply system using an updraft gasifier combined with advanced gas cleaning systems and other innovative energy solutions, including a heat pump for flue gas heat recovery. This system operates with near-zero air emissions of dust and other air pollutants, significantly outperforming existing biomass technologies while providing a low carbon transition option for industrial applications. This paper presents results from the initial phase of the project, including preliminary technology performance data from early development stages and initial techno-economic analyses. These results, together with an in-house developed stock model, form the basis for a preliminary impact assessment considering different deployment scenarios and analysing the potential of the new technology to reduce emissions and support the EU's climate and clean air objectives, including the increased use of renewable energy. The results will contribute to the further refinement of the technology and support discussions on future policy development

Fehlen normative Festlegungen, führt dies sowohl aus Sicht der Nutzenden als auch der Anbietenden zu zusätzlichen Aufwänden und macht Precycling-Lösungen damit im Vergleich zu den sehr präzise definierten Einweg-Lösungen unattraktiver. Mit der Normungsroadmap Circular Economy von DIN, DKE und VDI wurde ein von einem breiten Spektrum an Stakeholdern getragener Prozess gestartet, solche Normungsdefizite zu konkretisieren und daraus konkrete Normungsbedarfe abzuleiten
A systematic assessment of low-carbon energy consumption by an integrated approach in rural China
Full text linkMany studies highlight the challenges of applying urban-based low-carbon assessment frameworks to rural energy consumption, emphasizing the need for a method suitable for rural conditions. This study aims to develop a systematic methodology suitable for low-carbon assessment of rural energy consumption in China. The proposed methodology was tested on 24,116 rural households across 124 villages in central and western China. Results indicate that it successfully overcomes limitations in current assessments, namely limited relevance, poor applicability, and inadequate policy alignment. The methodology is capable of adapting to the lack of basic data on rural energy and the inadequate statistics on rural energy consumption. The findings of this assessment reveal that energy structure (i.e., energy sources) is the main contributor to rural carbon emissions, followed by household economic conditions, rural house maintenance structure, and the awareness levels of farmers. These factors have a dramatic impact on the transition to low-carbon energy consumption in rural China

Full text linkIn den letzten Monaten vor Ausbruch der Corona-Pandemie hatte die Diskussion der Frage, wie eine nachhaltige Entwicklung der Bundesrepublik Deutschland ermöglicht werden kann, erheblich an Dynamik gewonnen. Diese Frage ist in der Krise zwar kurz in den Hintergrund getreten; die aktuelle Diskussion u.a. zu den Bedingungen, unter denen unsere Lebensmittel produziert werden, zeigt aber eindringlich, dass viele Probleme nach wie vor ungelöst sind. Immer sichtbarer wird, wie notwendig die Entwicklung nachhaltiger und zukunftsfähiger Konzepte für das Wirtschaften und Leben ist. Von herausragender Bedeutung ist dabei die Frage, wie eine nachhaltige Transformation der Produktions- und Konsumstrukturen politisch erfolgreich gestaltet werden kann. Vor diesem Hintergrund empfiehlt der SVRV der Bundesregierung in seinem aktuellen Policy Brief acht Maßnahmen, mit denen die Verbraucherpolitik im Kontext der Deutschen Nachhaltigkeitsstrategie dazu beitragen kann, nachhaltigen Konsum zu ermöglichen. Dabei nimmt der SVRV die Zusammenhänge zwischen einer zukunftsfähigen Transformation der relevanten Systeme und nachhaltigen Produktions- und Konsumstrukturen in den Blick
