Get PDFFor many reasons, Mennonite Low German is a language whose documentation and investigation is of great importance for linguistics. To date, most research projects that deal with this language and/ or its speakers have had a relatively narrow focus, with many of the data cited being of limited relevance beyond the projects for which they were collected. In order to create a resource for a broad range of researchers, especially those working on Mennonite Low German, the dataset presented here has been transformed into a structured and searchable corpus that is accessible online. The translations of 46 English, Spanish, or Portuguese stimulus sentences into Mennonite Low German by 321 consultants form the core of the MEND-corpus (Mennonite Low German in North and South America) in the Archive for Spoken German. In addition to describing the origin of this corpus and discussing possibilities and limitations for further research, we discuss the technical structure and search possibilities of the Database for Spoken German. Among other things, this database allows for a structured search of metadata, a context-sensitive token search, and the generation of virtual corpora that can be shared with others. Moreover, thanks to its text-sound alignment, one can easily switch from a particular text section of the corpus to the corresponding audio section. Aside from the desire to equip the reader with the technical knowledge necessary to use this corpus, a further goal of this paper is to demonstrate that the corpus still offers many possibilities for future research
Mundane food photography. Managing multiple involvements in the context of self-initiated smartphone use
Get PDFThis article investigates mundane photo taking practices with personal mobile devices in the co-presence of others, as well as “divergent” self-initiated smartphone use, thereby exploring the impact of everyday technologies on social interaction. Utilizing multimodal conversation analysis, we examined sequences in which young adults take pictures of food and drinks in restaurants and cafés. Although everyday interactions are abundant in opportunities for accomplishing food photography as a side activity, our data show that taking pictures is also often prioritized over other activities. Through a detailed sequential analysis of video recordings and dynamic screen captures of mobile devices, we illustrate how photographers orient to the momentary opportunities for and relevance of photo taking, that is, how they systematically organize their photographing with respect to the ongoing social encounter and the (projected) changes in the material environment. We investigate how the participants multimodally negotiate the “mainness” and “sideness” (Mondada, 2014) of situated food photography and describe some particular features of participants’ conduct in moments of mundane multiactivity
Zur Verwendung von Metadaten in der interaktionsanalytischen Arbeit mit Korpora - am Beispiel einer Untersuchung anhand des Korpus FOLK
Get PDFMetadaten zu Gesprächen und den beteiligten Sprecher/-innen enthalten Informationen, die für die Beschreibung, Erschließung und Analyse von Korpora wichtig sind. Bisher werden sie jedoch in der Konversationsanalyse und der Interaktionalen Linguistik so gut wie nicht genutzt. Dieser Beitrag zeigt exemplarisch, wie Metadaten des Gesprächskorpus „Forschungs- und Lehrkorpus Gesprochenes Deutsch“ (FOLK) im Rahmen einer interaktionslinguistischen Untersuchung verwendet werden können, um Regularitäten der Verwendung einer untersuchten Gesprächspraktik zu identifizieren und ihren Zusammenhang mit den Eigenschaften von Aktivitäten und Sprecherrollen zu klären. In allgemeinerer Perspektive diskutiert der Beitrag, wie und an welchen Stellen einer interaktionslinguistischen Untersuchung Metadaten von Nutzen sein können und wie ihr Stellenwert im Rahmen dieser Methodologie kritisch reflektiert werden muss.Metadata concerning interactional events and their participants contain important information for the description, exploration and analysis of corpus data. However, to date metadata are only scarcely used in Conversation Analysis and Interactional Linguistics. This paper demonstrates how the metadata documented in the Forschungs- und Lehrkorpus für Gesprochenes Deutsch (FOLK) (Research and Training Corpus of Spoken German) can be used in an interactional linguistic study to identify regularities in the use of an interactional practice with respect to characteristics of activities and participant roles. In a broader perspective, the paper discusses how and at what stage of the research process metadata can be useful for interactional linguistic research. The general need for critical reflection on the role of metadata within this methodology is emphasized
Proposition oder Temporalangabe? Disambiguierung von ung-Nominalisierungen von verba dicendi in nach-PPs
No full textWir schlagen im Folgenden Schemata für die semantische Repräsentation von -ung-Nominalisierungen von verba dicendi in mehrdeutigen nach-PPs vor. Der Rahmen ist die Diskursrepräsentationstheorie. Aus den Repräsentationen werden Kriterien für die automatische Disambiguierung in einem System zur flachen semantischen Analyse von Sätzen abgeleitet. Die Kriterien werden durch maschinell erkennbare Indikatoren realisiert. Neben harten Entscheidungskriterien werden auch solche berücksichtigt, die nur mehr oder weniger starke Empfehlungen für oder gegen eine Lesart darstellen. Auf Basis pragmatischer Erwägungen zu den erarbeiteten Lesart-Schemata werden Gewichtungen für solche Kriterien vorgenommen und es wird gezeigt, wie sich diese in einem Bootstrapping-Ansatz zur Approximation des Disambiguierungsverhaltens von Rezipienten an Korpora überprüfen und verbessern lassen. Get PDFDie tief greifenden Reformen der Arbeitsmarkt- und Sozialpolitik in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland in den 2000er Jahren gingen einher mit kontroversen Debatten, in deren Kontext „Wirklichkeitserzählungen“ (Klein/Martínez (Hg.) 2009), wie sie für ökonomische Kontexte charakteristisch sind, eine relevante Ressource der Persuasion darstellten. Der vorliegende Beitrag behandelt derartige Formate auf der Ebene des Managements von Organisationen. Im Mittelpunkt des theoretischen Teils steht eine Weiterentwicklung des Konzepts der Wirklichkeitserzählung im Blick auf eine semiologische Klärung der Frage, wie in derartigen Narrationen der charakteristische Wirklichkeitsbezug hergestellt wird. Im empirischen Teil werden Daten aus einem Projekt über Mitarbeiterzeitungen aus dem Untersuchungszeitraum unter der Perspektive der Wirklichkeitserzählungen reanalysiert: Untersucht werden charakteristische narrative Formate und deren „Sitz im Leben“ (Gunkel 1906/2004), und es wird nach den ästhetischen und pragmatischen Kosten gefragt, die mit derartigen Funktionalisierungen des Erzählens in Organisationen möglicherweise verbunden sind
Why do Russian-speaking families in Latvia choose Latvian-medium education? Three narratives about critical events
No full textOur paper discusses family language policies among multilingual families in Latvia with Russian as home language. The presentation is based on three case studies, i.e. interviews conducted with Russophones who have chosen to send their children to Latvian-medium pre-schools and schools. The main aim is to understand practices and regards among such families “from below,” i.e. which family-internal and family-external factors influenced the choice of Latvian-medium education and what impact this choice has on linguistic practices.
The paper shows that there have been critical events which both encouraged and discouraged the choice of Latvian-medium education. The wish to integrate into mainstream society has been met by obstacles both from ethnic Russians and Latvians. Yet, the three families consider their choices to be the right ones for the future development of their children in a multiethnic Latvia in which Latvian serves as the unifying language of society
