Dopasowywanie się do zmieniającego się świata, ale w zgodzie z zasadami: International Labour Organization responses to the challenges facing social protection systems in the 21st century
Get PDFIntroduction: The paper analyses – basing itself on reports and other documents created by different parts of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) – the process which led to the adoption of Social Protection Floor Recommendation No. 202 and the shift in focus of social policy advice towards basic protection and to the Global South countries. We look at the actions of different actors which shape the standard setting and policy stand of the organisation. Objective: To provide a comprehensive analysis of the historical trajectory of ILO social security standards, examining the evolution of principles, conventions, and the global dynamics that have shaped the organization's approach to social protection over time. Materials and methods: The methods include examining ILO documents, relevant subject literature, and the author's participant observations from over twenty-years of service in the ILO's Social Security Department, aiming to provide insights into the decision-making processes within the organization. Conclusion: We conclude that change was brought by: 1) shift in the membership of the ILO and of its decision-making bodies towards the increased presence and powers of representatives from countries of the Global South, 2) the shift in the global development community policy priorities towards poverty reduction, 3) emergence of experimental social assistance schemes in Global South countries, with designs often ignoring principles embedded in the ILO standards. The Social Protection Floor Recommendation complements previous standards in response to the challenges of widespread poverty and informality and spreading atypical forms of employment. It provides two directions of policy responses: 1) formalizing informal employment relationships and 2) expanding universal or targeted rights-based social assistance schemes. Assistance provided by ILO to member states focuses now more on building the non-contributory schemes and on identifying the fiscal space necessary to close the coverage gaps. Nowadays, the ILO must collaborate more than before with other development partners and the main challenge is to build among them awareness and acceptance of the principles of the ILO social security standards
Exploring International Destination Governance Typology for Creating Competitive and Sustainable Destinations
No full textBased on the WEF Travel & Tourism Report data, this study deploys k-means cluster analysis to build a global typology of national destination governance. Previous studies have focused on case studies, while this chapter focuses on classification of different destination types, by deploying indicators a set of following relevant indicators: wastewater treatment, fixed broadband internet subscriptions, ground transport efficiency, quality of roads, quality of railroad infrastructure, reliability of police services, ease of finding skilled employees. The results present a four-cluster solution of national destination governance types, as well as their major characteristics. The chapter than provides and discusses important implication for theory and practice of destination governance
Effects of a Nudging Cue Targeting Food Choice in a University Cafeteria: A Field Study
No full textMany students approaching adulthood often choose high-calorie food products. Concurrently, health interventions applied during this life phase can potentially lead to a healthier lifestyle. Nudge health interventions in experimental cafeteria settings have been found to improve eating behavior effectively, yet research in real-world settings is lacking. Accepting nudges as health interventions impacts nudge effectiveness. The present study applies a pretest–posttest design for a period of three consecutive weeks (no nudge, nudge, no nudge), testing the effectiveness of the so-called Giacometti cue on the number of calories purchased in a real-world cafeteria. Students were exposed to the nudge during the intervention week when entering the cafeteria and when choosing their meals. After purchasing a meal, their choice was recorded, and they completed a questionnaire. The Giacometti cue immediately reduced the number of calories purchased (comparing weeks one and two). After nudge removal, an effect was identified, increasing the number of calories purchased (comparing weeks two and three). Contrary to expectations, higher nudge acceptance resulted in more calories purchased. Neither awareness of the nudge’s presence when buying food nor the interaction between acceptance and awareness played a role. We explore potential explanations for the Giacometti cue’s effects
ESKAPEE Pathogen Biofilm Control on Surfaces with Probiotic Lactobacillaceae and Bacillus species
No full textCombatting the rapidly growing threat of antimicrobial resistance and reducing prevalence and transmission of ESKAPEE pathogens in healthcare settings requires innovative strategies, one of which is displacing these pathogens using beneficial microorganisms. Our review comprehensively examines the evidence of probiotic bacteria displacing ESKAPEE pathogens, with a focus on inanimate surfaces. A systematic search was conducted using the PubMed and Web of Science databases on 21 December 2021, and 143 studies were identified examining the effects of Lactobacillaceae and Bacillus spp. cells and products on the growth, colonization, and survival of ESKAPEE pathogens. While the diversity of study methods limits evidence analysis, results presented by narrative synthesis demonstrate that several species have the potential as cells or their products or supernatants to displace nosocomial infection-causing organisms in a variety of in vitro and in vivo settings. Our review aims to aid the development of new promising approaches to control pathogen biofilms in medical settings by informing researchers and policymakers about the potential of probiotics to combat nosocomial infections. More targeted studies are needed to assess safety and efficacy of different probiotic formulations, followed by large-scale studies to assess utility in infection control and medical practice

No full textDurch den digitalen Wandel der letzten Jahrzehnte haben sich Fotos im Journalismus zum Must-have entwickelt, gerade online. Doch nicht immer sind Fotos verfügbar, die das Thema eines Artikels dokumentieren können. In dem Fall wird häufig auf Symbolfotos zurückgegriffen. Es finden Fotos Verwendung, die meist auf Vorrat produziert, durch Stockdatenbanken selektiert und präsentiert werden, um schließlich Gesicht eines Produktes oder Artikels zu sein, ohne in ihrer Entstehung mit der Verwendung in Zusammenhang zu stehen.
Welche Wirkung hat die Verwendung von Symbolfotos im Technik- und Wissenschaftsjournalismus auf Rezipienten in Deutschland? Anhand einer explorativen Befragung von 82 Personen mit dem Ziel durch eine vorwiegend quantitative Analyse einen Überblick über Einstellung und Umgang der Stichprobe mit Symbolfotos zu gewinnen, ermöglicht die Arbeit erste Thesen zur Sicht der Rezipienten auf die Verwendung von Symbolfotos – jedoch keine repräsentativen Ergebnisse.Due to the digital transformation of the last decades, photos have become a must-have in journalism, especially online. But photos that can document the subject of an article are not always available. In this case, editors often use symbolic pictures. Photos are used that are usually produced on stock and selected through stock databases to finally be the face of a product or article without being connected to their use in their creation.
What effect does the use of symbol photos in technology and science journalism have on recipients in Germany? On the basis of an explorative survey of 82 people with the aim of gaining an overview of the sample's attitude to and handling of symbolic photos through a mainly quantitative analysis, the work enables initial theses on the recipients' view on the use of stock photos - but no representative results
