Explicating the Conditions for (Un)sustainable Tourists’ Behaviour in a Cultural Heritage Destination: A Mixed-Method Approach Based on the Theory of Planned Behaviour

    No full text
The study examines sustainable tourism behaviour at the historic city of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. The research aims to explain tourists' sustainable behaviour and to uncover configurations that lead to sustainable or unsustainable behaviour. The present study is based on the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) as its theoretical framework. A mixed-method design is then employed, integrating quantitative and qualitative research methodologies. The quantitative arm of the study employs regression analysis, while the qualitative research uses the fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA). The findings from the regression analysis revealed that sustainability-oriented attitudes, social norms, and behavioural control have a statistically significant impact on tourists' sustainability-oriented behavioural intention, in descending order of importance. The fsQCA results showed that strong attitudes are a necessary condition for strong behavioural intention toward sustainable tourism activities. Weak social norms are an essential condition for weak behavioural intention toward sustainable tourism activities. Furthermore, the study identified the following sufficient conditions for a strong intention to engage in sustainable tourism activities: strong social norms paired with weak behavioural control, or strong attitudes in conjunction with strong social norms

Überlastung und ihre gesundheitlichen Folgen. Sozial- und Gesundheitsberufe in der Covid-19-Pandemie

    No full text

Wizard of Oz: An Underestimated Method in the Field of Social Robotics

    No full text
In 2017, we designed a basic web dashboard to temporarily control Pepper’s robot, which was in the process of implementing an Android remote controller app. Although the intention was to operate the robot’s basic control, its design and function have led to its long-term use of this dashboard, even now. We quite underestimated the potential use of this dashboard. Often, it helps us bring the robot to life and make it functional, whereas the Choregraphe and smartphone remote app could not connect to it. Later, we often used the Wizard of Oz method to impress older adults in the care home and demonstrate the fun aspects of the robot to them. Nowadays, it is less frequent to use the dashboard and Wizard of Oz in general; still, it is a game-changer when new people see and interact with the robot. However, this raises some ethical considerations about manipulating the target groups to like the robot. Therefore, in this paper, we discuss the importance of ethical considerations in using the Wizard of Oz method and the design implications that lead to the long-term use of this dashboard

Fungus Penicillium rubens isolated from the International Space Station (ISS) shows faster colony growth and better spore resistance to cosmic radiation than type strain

Understanding microbial adaptations to the extreme conditions of space is crucial for both astronaut health and the integrity of spacecraft materials. This study comparatively analyses the cosmic radiation resistance and growth responses to simulated microgravity (SMG) of a wild-type strain and an International Space Station (ISS) isolate of Penicillium rubens. Resistance to helium- and iron-ion radiation was determined, alongside growth under SMG using clinorotation. The results revealed that the ISS isolate exhibited higher resistance to both helium- and iron-ion radiation than the wild-type strain, suggesting adaptive mechanisms that enhance survival in space environments. Additionally, while the ISS isolate demonstrated significantly increased growth in SMG compared to normal gravity conditions, the wild-type strain showed no difference between the two conditions. These findings indicate that prolonged exposure to the space environment may select for traits that enhance resistance to cosmic radiation and alter growth dynamics under microgravity. Such adaptations could have implications for microbial monitoring in space habitats, planetary protection policies, and potential biotechnological applications in space. Further investigations into the genetic and metabolic differences between both strains may provide deeper insights into fungal adaptation to space environments

HEteronuclear Referencing for METRologic Isotope Calibration (HERMETRIC)

    No full text
This work presents the concept of heteronuclear referencing for metrologic isotope calibration (HERMETRIC) as an innovative approach to quantitative NMR (qNMR) spectroscopy. The aim is to establish a metrologically based fundamental understanding that goes beyond traditional homonuclear NMR methods. In comparison to established quantitative methods-such as weighing, titration, chromatography, and complexometry-it is demonstrated that qNMR, as a primary method, can determine absolute amounts of substance directly without external calibration. At the same time, heteronuclear quantification opens new perspectives by enabling the direct traceability of all active nuclei to a universal qNMR primary standard. The concepts are intended to encourage the further establishment of qNMR as a powerful instrument in analytical chemistry and its incorporation into pharmacopoeias and other official standard protocols
