On the Transition from European to American Dominance in the 20th Century
Get PDFapplication/pdfThe purpose of this paper is to help students understand and appreciate the tremendous historical transition which brought about what we all the modern age, or modern history. In the late 19th century, the British Empire was at its zenith, but it’s important for students to appreciate how this global phenomenon was built on a combination of colonial control, capitalist aspirations, and technological innovation. After this history is reviewed, our study goes on to see how the dissolution of this colonialist/imperialist world order occurred in the context of World War I. This war, ending in 1918, resulted in the ending of British-European hegemony and was, simultaneously the beginning of the rise of the American colossus. An examination of the period of the 1920’s shows how America was instrumental in establishing and spreading a new cultural order based on cultural relativism, in contrast to traditional norms of Biblical Christianity. Thus, modernity has two important dimensions which the student will be led to appreciate: economic dominance alongside the generation of a new, modern, American culture.departmental bulletin pape

A study on the psychosocial influence of implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD): from a case in which the patient demanded removal operation of the ICD
Get PDFapplication/pdf植込み型除細動器（ICD）を植込み後に心理社会的な影響を受け，7年後に自らの希望でICD を抜去した事例に半構造化インタビューを実施した。インタビュー内容は現象学的な分析を用いて，事例が抱える心理社会的影響の本質を明らかにしようとした。本事例の心理社会的影響を構成する概念として，《ICD 植込みへの納得のいかない決断》《ICD 植込みによる日常生活上の制限による心理的悪影響》《生き方に影響された病態解釈》《ICD抜去を許可した医師との出会い》《個別医療を含めた全人的医療の必要性》の5つが抽出された。そして，それらの概念を構成する本質として【ライフヒストリー】の影響が考えられた。本事例の抱えるような心理社会的問題を解決するためにはチーム医療が重要である。患者との関わりの機会が多い理学療法士が身体的な症状のみに着目するのではなく，【ライフヒストリー】の理解という意識を持つことで，よりよいチーム医療の実践に貢献できると考えられた。We conducted a semi-structured interview regarding a case in which a patient suffered a psychosocial impact after implantation with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD). In that case, the ICD was withdrawn at the patient’s request seven years after ICD implantation. We analyzed the interview contents phenomenologically and decided to clarify the essence of the psychosocial impact of the case. As a concept constituting the psychosocial impact of this case, five factors were determined : inconvenient decision to implant ICD, psychological impact due to restriction on daily life by ICD implantation, interpretation of disease condition affected by way of life, encounter with physician who allowed ICD removal, and all-inclusive medical treatment including individual medical care. Furthermore, the influence of “the patient’s life history” was considered to be the essence of constituting those factors. In order to solve psychosocial problems such as in this case, team medicine in which multiple medical personnel collaborate and a physical therapist with a thorough understanding of both the patient’s life history and symptoms contribute to better team medical practice.症例報告journal articl
