    IMPROVING STUDENTS’ SPEAKING SKILL USING DIRECT INTERVIEW TYPE

    The objectives of this research are to find out whether the use of direct interview type improves the students’ speaking skill and the strengths and weaknesses of direct interview type. This research consisted of two cycles in which there were four steps in each cycle, namely planning, implementing, observation, and reflection. The researcher collected quantitative data of speaking tests and qualitative data of classroom situation, field note, photograph, interview, and questionnaires. The results are (1) the students’ speaking skill improved, the improvement of speaking score from 3. 86 up to 5.95 (2) Direct interview type established good communication activity between the teacher and the student and improved classroom management. On the other hand the disadvantage of direct interview type was difficulty in time management to conduct one to one interview with students in a big speaking class.     This article describes a classroom action research held in speaking class through the implementation of trivia-based activity to improve the University students’ speaking fluency and improve the classroom situation.     The objectives of the research are: (1) to identify whether and to what extent the use of YouTube videos improve the students’ ability in writing descriptive text; and (2) to describe the class climate when YouTube videos are implemented in the writing class. The research is carried out at SMA Negeri Gondangrejo. It is conducted from January 2012 up to March 2012. The subject of the research is the students of class X5 of SMA Negeri Gondangrejo in the academic year of 2011/2012. The research is conducted in two cycles, in which in the first cycle there are four meetings and three meetings in the second cycle. It is optimized the used of YouTube videos as the media for teaching writing. There are two kinds of data; qualitative data and quantitative data. The qualitative data are collected through observation, interview, and questionnaire. The quantitative data are collected using test. The qualitative data are analyzed through constant comparative method (CCM) including comparing incidents applicable to each category, integrating category and their properties, delimiting the theory and construct the theory. The quantitative data are analyzed through descriptive statistic technique including pretest, test in cycle 1, and post test. The research findings show that the use of YouTube video can improve students’ writing skill and class climate. In addition, the students mean score were also improve which can be seen from their writing mean score of pre-test, post test in cycle 1, and cycle 2, that is 66.04, 70.64, and 75.68.     A CORRELATIONAL STUDY BETWEEN STUDENTS’ ANXIETY, VOCABULARY MASTERY, AND SPEAKING SKILL

    The study is aimed to find out the correlation between students’ anxiety, vocabulary mastery, and speaking skill of the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Kartasura in the academic year of 2011/ 2012; both partially and simultaneously. The study belongs to a correlational study which uses a questionnaire and a test to collect the data. The population is all of the eleventh grade students while the sample is the students of class XI A3 taken by cluster random sampling technique. The techniques used to analyze the data are simple and multiple regression and correlation by using SPSS 18. The results of the study show that there is a positive correlation between students’ anxiety, vocabulary mastery, and speaking skill, both partially and simultaneously. The positive correlation indicates that students’ anxiety and vocabulary mastery tend to go up together with speaking skill or they tend to go down together with speaking skill. Both students’ anxiety and vocabulary mastery also give contribution to speaking skill

    This article describes a classroom action research held in writing class using a four-phase technique to improve the eleventh grade students’ writing skill and improve classroom situation. The method used in the research is classroom action research was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle included four stages: planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. The research data were collected by using observation, interview, document, photograph and test (pre-test and post-test). The data were analyzed through descriptive analysis which consists of assembling the data, coding the data, comparing the data, building interpretation, and reporting the outcomes for the qualitative data and descriptive statistics for the quantitative data. The research findings show that a four-phase technique is able to improve students’ wriitng skill and classroom situation.     ANIMATION VIDEO TO IMPROVE STUDENTS' VOCABULARY MASTERY

    This research aims to identify whether or not and to what extent animation video can improve students' vocabulary mastery. This is a Classroom Action Research conducted at the sixth grade students of MIN Nglungge, Polanharjo. There were 2 cycles and each cycle consists of five steps,  namely; (1) planning the action, (2) implementing the action, (3)observing the action, (4) reflecting the result of the observation, (5) revising of the action. The result of the research shows that animation video can improve the students' vocabulary mastery. It could be seen from these indicators: (a) students could spell the vocabularies; (b) most students were able to pronounce words correctly; (c) students could grasp the meaning well; and (d) students could recognize vocabularies. In line with the result, the writer suggests that animation video is one of the effective techniques in presentations as to increase the students' enthusiasm and their achievement in learning vocabulary. This result hopefully will motivate teachers to use animation video in teaching vocabulary to young learners. Key words: animation video, teaching vocabulary, vocabulary master

    IMPROVING STUDENTS’ SPEAKING SKILL TROUGH TALKING BALL GAME (TBG)

    The objectives of the research are to find out whether or not Talking Ball Game improves speaking skill and to describe the situation when Talking Ball Game is implemented in the speaking class of the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 1 Gemolong in the academic year of 2010/2011. It was conducted in 2 cycles. In the first cycle there were four meetings and in the second cycle there were two meetings. This research showed there is improvement in students’ speaking skill and situation of the class. For that reason, it is recommended that the English teacher uses this Talking Ball Game so that the students will not get bored and consequently the teaching and learning process can run well and the objectives can be achieved

    THE USE OF CARTOON FILMS TO IMPROVE STUDENTS’ SKILL IN WRITING NARRATIVE TEXTS

    The objectives of the research are: (1)to find out whether the students’ skill in writing narrative texts can be improved by using cartoon films. (2)to find out the effectiveness of the teaching and learning process when cartoon films are used in teaching writing narrative texts. The researcher collected the data using qualitative and quantitative data. The improvement of students’ writing skill includes: (1) having an abundance of vocabulary; (2) using correct capitalizations and spelling; (3) making sentences grammatically; (4) developing their ideas into coherent paragraphs. The effectiveness of using cartoon films shown in: (1) motivating students to write; (2) making the lesson more clearly (3) increasing their interest; (4) increasing their attention. The students’ score in pre-test was 61.77, post-test 1 in cycle 1 was 70.6, and post-test 2 in cycle 2 as 74.90. It can be concluded that the use of cartoon films can improve students’ skill in riting narrative text

    This article describes a classroom action research held in vocabulary class by  using Student Team-Achievement Divisions to improve student’s vocabulary mastery. The implementation conducted within two cycles. Each cycle consists of four meeting. The data collected by observation, questionnaire, interview, and test. The quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistic method. The qualitative data were analyzed by using the method suggested by Burn as follows: assembling the data; coding the data; comparing the data; building interpretation; and reporting the outcomes.
