IMPROVING STUDENTS’ WRITING ABILITY IN NARRATIVE TEXT USING PICTURE SERIES
The objectives of this research are: (1) To know the class situation during the implementation of picture series in teaching writing. (2) To know the improvement of students’ ability in writing narrative text using picture series. The subjects of the research are twenty-four students of class VIII A SMP N 2 Ampel Boyolali. In collecting the data, the researcher used observation, interview, field notes, photographs and test. The tests were conducted before the action (pretest) and after the action (posttest). The result of the research shows that there are positive improvements in students’ writing ability and the class situation during the teaching learning process. The results of the tests improved, from the pretest (conducted before the action) to the posttests (conducted after the action). The mean scores of the test result are 56 for the pretest, 66.74 for the posttest of cycle 1 and 70.2 for the posttest in the second, and the final posttest is 70.68. And also there are improvements in students’ writing ability; (1) the students were more motivated in joining the writing class, (2) they paid much attention when the researcher explain about the picture series and (3) they were also more confident when they were asked to write individually
IMPROVING STUDENTS’ WRITING SKILL OF DESCRIPTIVE TEXT BY USING PICTURE
The purpose of the research is to investigate whether or not pictures can improve students’ writing skill and class condition. The subject of this research is students of class VIII A in SMP N 5 Kebumen. The method of the research is a classroom action research. This research was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of four steps: planning, action, observation and reflection. To collect the qualitative data, the researcher used field notes, photograph and interview. To collect the quantitative data, the researcher conducted tests. The tests were pre-test and posttests. To analyze the qualitative data, the researcher used interactive model data analysis. For the quantitative data, the researcher analyzed the mean scores of the tests to compare differences between pre-test and post-test. The result of the research shows that teaching writing skill by using pictures could improve the students’ writing skill and the class condition. The improvements of the mean scores showed that there was an improvement on the students’ writing skill. The students’ mean score of pre-test is 51.15, it improves up-to 57.79 in the post-test I and up to 60.82 in the post-test II. Therefore, it could be concluded that teaching writing skill by using picture could improve the students’ writing skill
IMPROVING VOCABULARY MASTERY THROUGH HANGMAN GAME TO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS
This article is dealing with a classroom action research held in English class about the implementation of Hangman game to improve the fifth grade students’ vocabulary mastery and class situation. The method used in this research is an action research. This research was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle includes four stages: planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. The research data were collected by using techniques of observation, interview,notes/journals, documents, and tests. The qualitative data were analyzed through assembling the data, coding the data, comparing the data, building interpretations, and reporting the outcomes. Meanwhile, the quantitative data were analyzed through descriptive statistic. The research findings show that Hangman game could improve: (1) the students’ mastery in understanding the meaning of words; (2) the students’ mastery in spelling words; (3) the students’ mastery in pronouncing the words; (4) the students’ mastery in using the words based on the context given; and (5) English class situation
IMPROVING THE STUDENTS’ GRAMMAR MASTERY THROUGH EGRA TECHNIQUE
This classroom action research is aimed at finding out whether EGRA can improve the students’ grammar mastery and the strengths and weaknesses of EGRA to the class VIII of SMP N 1 Jaten Karanganyar. It was conducted in two cycles. Quantitative and qualitative data gathered indicates that EGRA effectively improve the students’ grammar mastery. The mean score of the test result is 56.7 for pre-test, 68.8 for the post-test 1 and 91.8 for the post-test 2. On the one hand, the research proves that (1) EGRA enhance the students’ grammar concept, (2) Generalization stage in EGRA steps pump up the students’ discovery in learning structures of a sentence and (3) EGRA technique can be a tool of motivator to build the students’awareness in learning grammar. On the other hand, it is time consuming in generalization stage and the students sometimes get bored with repeated explanation on structures.Keywords: Grammar mastery, EGR
IMPROVING STUDENTS’ SPEAKING ABILITY THROUGH TALKING CHIPS
The objectives of the research are to identify whether and to what extent Talking Chips can improve the students’ speaking ability, and to describe the classroom situation when talking chips are implemented in the speaking class. The research method used in this research is a classroom action research. In collecting the data, the researcher used questionnaire, observation, interview, document analysis and tests. The researcher conducted the test before research (pre-test) and after implementing talking chips (post test 1 and 2). The mean scores of each test were compared to know the students improvements in speaking ability. The improvement can be seen from the improvement of the mean score of pre-test (49), post test of cycle 1 (69.3) and the cycle 2 (77.8). Besides, the improvement of the classroom situation includes: 1) the class was more alive because the students participate actively; 2) there was an equal participation during the speaking class; 3) the students were motivated to speak English than Indonesian; 4) the students’ interaction improved significantly
IMPROVING STUDENTS’ SPEAKING SKILL USING SCAFFOLDING STRATEGY IN JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
This article describes a classroom action research held in speaking class through the implementation of scaffolding strategy to improve the Junior High School students’ speaking skill and improve classroom situation. The method used in the research is collaborative action research which was conducted in two cycles. Each cycles included four stages namely planning, implementing, observing and reflecting. The data that were obtained qualitatively and quantitatively show that through scaffolding strategy could improve: (1) students’ speaking skill; (2) speaking classroom situation.Keywords: speaking skill, scaffolding strategy
A CORRELATION BETWEEN LEARNING MOTIVATION AND VOCABULARY MASTERY AND READING COMPETENCE
This research is aimed to find out: (1) whether there is any correlation between learning motivation and reading competence; (2) whether there is any correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading competence; and (3) whether there is any correlation between learning motivation and vocabulary mastery simultaneously and reading competence. The research is carried out at SMP Negeri 4 Surakarta. The research is conducted from January – April 2012 in the second grade students, academic year 2011-2012. The data of the research is collected using questionnaire to collect the data of students’ learning motivation and test to collect the data of vocabulary mastery and students’ reading competence. The data are then being analyzed using simple correlation and multiple linear regression. The research findings show that (1) There is significant positive correlation between learning motivation and reading competence (ry1 = 0.735 > r table = 0.206); (2) There is significant positive correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading competence (0.710 > 0.206; (3) There is a significant positive correlation between learning motivation and vocabulary mastery simultaneously and reading competence (F observation 91.931 > F table 3.11). THE USE OF FACEBOOK NOTES TO IMPROVE STUDENTS’ SKILL IN RECOUNT TEXT WRITING
Facebook is a social networking sites founded in 2004 which has quickly become one of the leading social networking sites in the world. This article describes a classroom action research held in writing class through the use of Facebook notes to improve students’ skill in recount text writing. The subject of this research was the eighth grade students in SMP Negeri 4 Suarakarta. This research was conducted in two cycles. Each of the cycle had four steps; they are planning, implementing, observing and reflecting the action. There are two kinds of data in this research namely qualitative data and quantitative data. Qualitative data was analyzed by using four steps in Descriptive Qualitative Method. Quantitative data was analyzed by using descriptive statistic. Based on the data analysis, it showed that the use of Facebook notes could improve both students’ writing skill and the classroom climate.Keywords: classroom action research, writing skill, Facebook and social networking site
A CORRELATION STUDY BETWEEN GRAMMATICAL COMPETENCE, VERBAL LINGUISTIC INTELLIGENCE, AND WRITING ABILITY
The study is intended to verify the correlation between grammatical competence and verbal linguistic intelligence toward writing ability of the fourt semester students of English Education of Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Sebelas Maret University in the Academic Year of 2011/2012, either partially or simultaneously. The method is correlational study which used documentation and test to collect the data. The population of this study was all the fourth semester Students of English Education of Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Sebelas Maret University in the academic year of 2011/ 2012. By using cluster random sampling, the writer took class B which consists of 30 students as the sample. The technique to analyze the data was Linear Regression Analysis Statistic by using SPSS 16. The result of the study shows that there is a positive correlation between grammatical competence and verbal linguistic intelligence toward writing ability, either partially or simultaneously. Both grammatical competence and verbal linguistic intelligence have contribution to writing ability. The positive correlation means that the increase or decrease of independent variables, grammatical competence and verbal linguistic intelligence, will be followed by the increase or decrease of dependent variable, writing ability
IMPROVING STUDENTS’ WRITING SKILL BY USING THINK PAIR SHARE (TPS)
The objectives of the research are to find out whether or not Think Pair Share improves the students’ writing skill and to describe what happens when Think Pair Share is implemented in writing class. The implementation of Think Pair Share method in writing class was done within two cycles. Cycle 1 was conducted in three meetings and Cycle 2 was done in two meetings. The qualitative data were collected through observation, questionnaire, interview, and document analysis; while the quantitative ones were collected through test. The qualitative data were analyzed by using five stages suggested by Burns; whereas the quantitative data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics.
