THE USE OF ENGLISH IN TEACHING AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES IN A DESIGNED INTERNATIONAL STANDARDIZED ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
This study describes the use of English in one of designed international standardized elementary schools, SD Negeri Jaten 3 Karanganyar. The method used in the research is naturalistic inquiry. The data are taken from events, informants and documents by using interviews, bservations and document analyses. They are, then analyzed by using interactive model of analysis involving collecting the data, reducing the data, presenting the data and drawing conclusion. Verifying data and presenting data from the research, a conclusion can be drawn that using English as instructional language in SD Negeri Jaten 3 Karanganyar is not an easy task to do. Although the school has qualified-English teachers, it is not a guarantee that the use of English as instructional language in teaching and learning activities can run well. IMPROVING STUDENTS’ WRITING ABILITY ON NARRATIVE TEXT USING VIDEO
The objectives of the research are: (1) to identify whether and to what extent the use of videos can improve the students’ ability in writing Narrative text; and (2) to describe what happens to the class climate when videos are implemented in the writing class. The research is carried out at SMA Negeri 1 Ngemplak. It was conducted from September 2011 up to May 2012. The subject of the research is the students of class XI IA 1 of SMA Negeri 1 Ngemplak in the academic year of 2011/2012. In collecting and analyzing the data, the researcher used two kinds of data; qualitative data and quantitative data. The research findings show that the use of videos can improve students’ writing ability and class climate. It can be seen from their interest and motivation for English class, and writing mean score of pre-test 66.05 increased to 71.41 in post-test 1, and 75.05 in post-test 2. The last mean score is higher than KKM which is 72.00. Finally, it can be concluded that the use of videos can improve the students’ writing ability in narrative text and the class climate.Keywords: writing ability, narrative text, video
VOCABULARY MASTERY, READING STRATEGIES, AND READING COMPREHENSION
The objectives of the research are: 1) to find out whether there is or not correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension; 2) to find out whether there is or not correlation between reading strategies and reading comprehension; and 3) to find out whether there is or not correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading strategies simultaneously and reading comprehension. This research was carried out in April and May at Sebelas Maret University in which 32 students took vocabulary mastery test, reading comprehension test, anda questionnaire about reading strategies. The data were analyzed by using Pearson Product Moment and Multiple Correlation. It is found that: 1) rx1y=0.59 and to=4.0025 > tt=1.697 which means that there is a positive correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension; 2) rx2y= 0.49 and to 3.1 > tt 1.697 which means that there is a positive correlation between reading strategies and reading comprehension; and 3) Rx12.y=0.67 and Fo 11.175>3.33 which means that there is a positive correlation between vocabulary mastery,reading strategies simultaneously and reading comprehension. In conclusion, having great vocabulary mastery and optimizing reading strategies use is crucial because they have a positive contribution to reading comprehension.Keywords: vocabulary mastery, reading strategies, reading comprehensio
IMPLEMENTING THINK-PAIR-SHARE AND CRITICAL DEBATE TECHNIQUES TO IMPROVE STUDENTS’ SPEAKING SKILL
This research aims to find out whether the use of Think-Pair-Share and Critical DebateTechniques improve the students' speaking skill or not and how the teaching-learning process iswhen Think-Pair-Share and Critical Debate Techniques are applied in the classroom. Theresearch was carried out to the second grade students of SMA N 5 Surakarta, class of social 3taken as the sample by using purposive sampling based on the lowest speaking score from all thesecond grade classes. The result of the study shows that the use of Think-Pair-Share and CriticalDebate Techniques improve the students’ speaking skill. It can be seen from the increasing ofstudents’ mean score assessed by the researcher and the collaborator. The students’ motivation,enthusiasm and participation were also increased. In addition, students enjoyed the activitiesduring the learning process. The interaction of students was better when working in group.Keywords: speaking skill, Think-Pair-Share, Critical Debate
IMPLEMENTING WEBQUESTS TECHNIQUE AND OPTIMIZING READING STRATEGIES TO IMPROVE STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION
The objectives of this research are: (1) to find out whether and to what extent WebQuests Technique improves students’ reading comprehension (2) to describe the class climate when WebQuests Technique applied in reading class. The research data were collected by using techniques of observation, interview, field note, photographs, and test (pre-test and post-test). Related to the purposes of the study, the research design used in this study was action research. The research findings show that the implementation of WebQuests technique could improve students’ reading comprehension and class climate of reading class. The research results also indicated that these Web-based learning activities could make students more engaged in the learning process
IMPROVING ENGLISH VOCABULARY MASTERY BY USING CROSSWORD PUZZLE
This research is aimed to find out: (1) The improvement of the students’ vocabulary mastery through crossword puzzles and (2) The effect of teaching learning process when teaching vocabulary by using crossword puzzle is implemented. The method used in this research is classroom action research. It was carried out in two cycles. The techniques for collecting data are observation, interview, questionnare, field notes, photograph and test. The data were analyzed by using qualitative technique and quantitative technique. The researcher conducted the tests before (pre-test) and after (post-test). The research result shows the improvements in students’ vocabulary mastery and gives good effect in teaching learning process. The mean score of pre-test was 50, the post-test 1 was 69, and the post-test 2 was 80. Beside that, there were good effects in the teaching learning process such as the students were more active in following the lesson; the students became less noisy; the students were not ashamed to answer the question; and the students could focus more on the lesson
THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE GENRE BASED APPROACH IN SMA NEGERI 1 MANYARAN
The research aims to know what the implementation of the genre based approach in SMA Negeri 1 Manyaran is and the problems that the teachers’ face in implementing this approach. This research is limited to the teachers’ understanding to the implementation of GBA the teachers’ attitude to the implementation of the GBA and the development of the syllabi and lesson plans. The method used is qualitative research. In collecting the data, the researcher used interview, observation, and document. The result shows that the teachers understand about the implementation of the genre based approach, but they do not implement the steps in the genre based approach. Teachers’ hae positie attitude to the implementation of GBA. The development of the syllabi and lesson plans follow the planning and implementation steps but do not follow the evaluation and revision step. IMPROVING STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION USING JIGSAW
The objectives of the research are (1) to describe how jigsaw improves the students’ reading comprehension at the eighth grade of SMP Islam Diponegoro Surakarta and (2) to describe how jigsaw can improve class situation. In the pre research, the students had difficulties in identifying main idea, identifying supporting detail, guessing meaning of new words, and identifying communicative purpose of text, identifying cohesive device, and identifying reference. Because of those indicators, the researcher applied jigsaw technique. The research finding shows that jigsaw could overcome the students’ difficulties in reading comprehension; they could identify main idea, identify supporting details, guess meaning of new words, identify communicative purpose of text, identify cohesive device, and identify reference. The improvement could be seen from the mean score of posttest 1 (60.37) and it increased to 73.08 in posttest 2. Besides solving the students’ difficulties, jigsaw improved the class situation. Before conducting jigsaw technique in teaching process, the students’ motivation was low and after the implementation of jigsaw, their motivation improved. Based on the preobservation, most of students were passive. After taught jigsaw technique, the students became more active and interactive during the teaching learning process. There was improvement in the students’ attitude. Finally, it can be concluded that jigsaw can improve the students’ reading comprehension and improve the class situation.
THE IMPLEMENTATION OF SCHOOL CURRICULUM IN TEACHING ENGLISH
This research is aimed to describe the implementation of KTSP in teachingEnglish at the second year of SMA N 1 Banyudonowhich is viewed from thelearning activity in English lessons, the evaluation system the schoolused and theteaching materials. In addition, the other aim is to identify the strengths and theweaknesses in the KTSP implementation in teaching English at the second year ofSMA N 1 Banyudono. This study was conducted at SMA N 1 Banyudonoin May2012. In this study, the researcher applied a descriptive qualitative method todescribe the KTSP implementation in teaching English. The techniques ofcollecting the data in this study were observation, interview and documentanalysis. In analyzing the data, the researcher applied interactive analysis method;data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing. A COMPARATIVE STUDY ON THE EFFECTIVENESS OF CROSSWORD GAME AND LECTURING METHODS TO TEACH VOCABULARY
The objectives of this research are: (1) to find out whether there is significant difference in effectiveness between crossword game and lecturing methods to teach vocabulary (2) to find out which one is more effective, crossword game or lecturing methods to teach vocabulary to the third grade of SDN Sumber 3 Surakarta in the academic year of 2012/ 2013. The writer took the sample by using cluster random sampling. The research instrument used to collect the data in this study is tests. Related to the purposes of the study, the research design used in this study was comparative study. Besides, the writer finds that teaching vocabulary using crossword game gives better achievement than lecturing method. In other words, crossword game is more effective than lecturing method to teach vocabulary
