THE MATERIAL COMPATIBILITY AND COMMUNICATIVE EXERCISES IN ENGLISH TEXTBOOK “PROGRESS”
This research investigates the degree of compatibilty of the language skills materials in “Progress” with the indicators required by School based Curriculum and to see whether or not the exercises are communicative. In collecting the data, the researcher uses document analysis. The result of the analysis shows that the percentage of the appropriateness of the skillsdeveloped in the textbook “Progress” is 59.22% (listening: 62.85%; speaking: 59.38%; reading: 47.06%; writing: 63.16%). It means that the textbook is compatible with the School-based Curriculum in developing English skills. In addition, the data also reveals that 62.5% of the exercises are communicative. A PRAGMATIC STUDY ON INDIRECT DIRECTIVE SPEECH ACTS IN MOVIE MANUSCRIPT
The objectives of this research are: (1) to find out the linguistic forms of indirectdirective utterances employed by the characters of the film entitled “The Fellowship of the Ring”(2) to describe the context of situation in which each form of indirect directive utterances isemployed by the characters of the film. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method. Theresearch data were collecting by using observation. The data were analyzed by using aninteractive model. The results of this research are that (1) the indirect directive speech actsuttered by the characters of the film are in the forms of single words, phrases, sentences andsequence of sentences; (2) the functions implied which are expressed by the characters in thefilm are: requesting, commanding, recommending, questioning, and prohibiting; (3) the classesof directive speech acts expressed by the characters of the film are requestives, requirements,questions, and prohibitives.Keywords: pragmatic, indirect speech act, directive speec
IMPROVING STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY MASTERY THROUGH CREATING WALL PICTURES
This study aims to identify whether wall pictures can improve the students’ vocabulary mastery, and to describe the class situation when wall pictures are applied in the fifth grade of elementary students. These students found it hard to: memorize the meaning, pronounce, spell, and use the new word. They also got bored easily in the English lesson. To solve the problems, the researcher applied wall pictures. She conducted two cycles of action esearch. The data of the research are collected through observation, interview, questionnaire, and tests. The qualitative data are analyzed using interactive model. Meanwhile, the quantitative data are analyzed by descriptive statistics. The result of the research shows that: (1) wall pictures an improve the students’ vocabulary mastery in terms of meaning, pronunciation, spelling, using the word in simple sentence; (2) wall pictures could also improve the class situation; the classroom atmosphere is more a live. PICTURES FOR TEACHING WRITING
This research aims at finding out whether and how picture can improve students‟ writing skill. This research uses the design of Action Research and was conducted in two cycles. The data are collected through observation, test, and interview. The research results show that the benefits of pictures i.e. focusing students attention, stimulate and provides ideas, and lessen anxiety help students to improve their writing in terms of content and, organization, and help teacher to work on students grammar and vocabulary, and mechanics (punctuation and spelling). These findings, however; are not to neglect the consideration on how and the execution of how pictures are used in the classroom activities by both teacher and students. As a media, pictures do need careful handling in selecting and using. AN ERROR ANALYSIS ON RECOUNT TEXTS MADE BY THE FIRST GRADE STUDENTS OF MAN 2 JEPARA
Indonesian students as foreign language learners have difficulties in learning English. One of the students’ difficulties is in delivering ideas in a written form. They need to consider about the grammatical components of English that differ from Indonesian language. This article describes about errors made by the students in writing a recount text. Twenty four students from the first graders of MAN 2 Jepara were asked to write about their past experience. All students writing are, then, analyzed in order to investigate students’ errors. Based on the linguistic category, it can be concluded that the students have difficulties in morphology, syntax, vocabulary and meaning, and mechanics. THE CONTRIBUTION OF VOCABULARY MASTERY AND LOCUS OF CONTROL TOWARD READING COMPREHENSION
The aim of the study is to determine the correlation between vocabulary mastery and internal locus of control toward reading comprehension either partially or simultaneously. The method used in the study is a correlational study; with a test and a questionnaire as the technique of collecting data. The population is all of the second grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Puring in the academic year of 2011/2012. The sample is 40 students taken by cluster random sampling technique. The technique used to analyze the data is Linear Regression Analysis Statistic by using SPSS 18. The results of the study show that there is a positive correlation between vocabulary mastery and internal locus of control toward reading comprehension, either partially or simultaneously. Both independent variables, vocabulary mastery and internal locus of control have contribution to dependent variable, reading comprehension.Keywords: Vocabulary mastery, locus of control, reading comprehensio
IMPROVING STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY MASTERY USING CROSSWORD PUZZLES
This article describes a classroom action research in the English class through the implementation of crossword puzzle to improve the student’s vocabulary mastery. The implementation of crossword puzzles in the English class was done within two cycles. Cycle 1 was conducted in three meetings and cycle 2 was done in two meetings. The data were collected by using techniques of observation, interview, notes/journals, documents, and tests. The qualitative data were analyzed using the method proposed by Burns that is assembling the data, coding the data, comparing the data, building interpretations, and reporting the outcomes; whereas the quantitative data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics. The results of the research showed that crossword puzzle could improve both students’ vocabulary mastery and the class situation.Keywords: crossword puzzle, vocabulary master
THE USE OF ROLE-PLAY TO IMPROVE STUDENTS’ SPEAKING SKILL
This research is conducted; (1) to find out whether role play can improve students’ speaking ability of Science Class XI-3 in SMA Negeri 7 Surakarta; (2) to find out whether role-play can improve class situation’s problem in learning-teaching activity. The method of this study is aclassroom action research. It consists of planning, action, observing, and reflection. The class consists of 28 students. The techniques of collecting data used were field notes, photographs, speaking test, and interview techniques. Quantitative data were analyzed by comparing score before and after each cycle. Qualitative data were analyzed by constant comparative method. The research findings are the improvement of students’ speaking ability and classroom situation. The students’’ mean score of pre test is 60.48, it improves up to 66.92 in the first cycle, and up to 75.58 in the second cycle.Keywords: role-play, speaking achievemen
IMPROVING STUDENTS’ WRITING SKILL BY USING STORYTELLING
This article aims to discuss whether storytelling can improve students’ writing skill. The objectives of the research are: (1) to identify whether storytelling can improve the students’ writing skill and (2) to describe the class situation when storytelling implemented to the teaching and learning process. The research is a classroom action carried out at SMAN 3 Sukoharjo. The subject of the research is the first year students.In collecting data, the researcher used observation, interview, questionnaire and test. The research finding shows that the students who are taught using storytelling improve their writing skill. It can be noted in the result of their writing from preliminary observation up to cycle 2. There is improvement in each cycle. Therefore, storytelling can be used as alternative way to improve the students’ writing skill. MASTERY OF SIMPLE SENTENCE PATTERNS IN WRITING CLASS
This research purposes to describe how well the students in higher ducation master the patterns in simple sentence particularly in writing class. With fifty participants, the instruments are writing test and questionnaire. Writing test is to measure the mastery of simple sentence pattern; then questionnaire is to scale the participants’ attitude. Using Likert-Scale Typed, the data is analyzed using descriptive statistics and qualitative analysis. The result shows that the beginner writer must recognize and understand the patterns of simple sentence. Then, it may help as a basic knowledge and practice for developing paragraph, essay, and advance writing. However, the articipants seem uncertain how well they recognize and understand it. They are not completely confident whether they master to recognize, understand, and lassify the patterns, nor are they sure to arrange, write and develop simple sentence with correct attern. This is consistent with what the level of mastery obtained, 74% of them fall to somewhat well. Keywords: writing class, sentence patter
