Advanced Statistics - Biology 603 - Labs
Created by Dr. Robert Huber of Bowling Green State University, this page lists the laboratories and java projects for a course in advanced statistics. The site contains three lessons on univariate analyzes. Also, it contains labs on: sex and size, power analysis, multi-factor design, assumptions of ANOVA, and frequency tables. Each lab has a detailed presentation and easily followable format. This is a nice set of resources for those using statistics in the field of biology
Point Estimation
Created by Kyle Siegrist of the University of Alabama-Huntsville, this is an online, interactive lesson on point estimation. The author provides examples, exercises, and applets about the topic. More specifically, they concern estimators, method of moments, maximum likelihood, Bayes' estimators, best unbiased estimators, and sufficient, complete and ancillary statistics. Additionally, the author provides links to external resources for students looking to engage in a more in-depth study of the topic. This is simply one lesson in a series of seventeen. They are easily accessible as the author has created the site in an online textbook format
Total Solar Eclipse 2008: Live from China
On August 1, 2008, a total solar eclipse moved over parts of Russia, Greenland, Canada, and China. Fortunately, the dedicated team at the Exploratorium was there, and they documented this unique event. The first thing visitors should check out here is a replay of the events as they occurred. After viewing the eclipse, visitors should read the dispatches from the Exploratorium crew. These colorful and descriptive dispatches include commentaries on everything from setting up to capture the event to visiting the "Stonehenge of the Gobi Desert". Visitors can also chime in with their two cents, and then move to the "Features" area. Here they will find topical pieces like "The Sun-Eating Dragon and Other Ways to Think About An Eclipse" and journal excerpts from previous eclipse events
Critical Thinking Web
Teaching critical thinking can be difficult, and it is nice to know that Professors Joe Lau and Jonathan Chan at the University of Hong Kong have created this site to help both teachers and students in this endeavor. Working with a grant from the government of Hong Kong's University Grants Committee, the two have created this website to provide access to over 100 free online tutorials on critical thinking, logic, scientific reasoning, and creativity. The homepage includes a brief introduction to critical thinking and access to the main modules, which are divided into thematic areas such as values and morality, strategic thinking, and basic logic. Visitors can also view the Chinese version of this site, download class exercises, and even take on "the hardest logic puzzle in the world."
Economics Network of the Higher Education Academy
The Higher Education Academy has a number of well-developed databases of materials designed for educators, and the Economics Network is one that should not be missed. The homepage includes a brief introduction to the network and an area designed particularly for newcomers to the site. On the right hand side of the homepage, visitors can take in economics podcasts and learn about new case studies, such as "Teaching and Learning Economics Through Cinema". Leaving that area, visitors will want to click on the "Resources" area to delve into their "Reflections on Teaching" series and their 600 sources of online teaching materials, including glossaries, interactive tutorials, and online texts. From there, visitors are also welcome to sign up to receive monthly email updates and also look at their other sites, which include "Why Study Economics?" and "Internet Economist"
Clean Energy: Converting Light to Energy
The NanoEd Resource Portal, a âdynamic repository for information dissemination, research and collaborations among the community of nanoscale science and engineering education (NSEE) learners, teachers and researchers,â provides this introductory nanoscience activity focusing on energy production. During this activity students have the opportunity to learn about alternative energy technologies and the application of nanoscience to creating new âenergy conversion mechanisms.â Student learning objectives are included at the beginning of the lesson to provide a context for what students will gain from these activities. Two lessons, âIntroduction to Clean Energyâ and âSolar Energy and Nanoscienceâ make up the content of this activity. .â Each lesson contains an overview, teacher materials, PowerPoint slides and notes, and student materials available in PDF format. Some of the animations for this activity require Flash Player. This is an excellent resource, which can be easily adapted into your classroom
The Industrial Designers Society of America
Some of our readers may wonder, "What exactly is industrial design?" Fortunately The Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) is well-positioned to provide such an answer. On their site, they define Industrial design (ID) as "the professional service of creating and developing concepts and specifications that optimize the function, value and appearance of products and systems for the mutual benefit of both user and manufacturer." On their site, current and future industrial designers can learn about the field, read about design news, and even sign up to become a member of the IDSA. New visitors may wish to start by perusing the "Features" on the right-hand side of the page. Recent features offered here have included a primer of getting a design job, creating "designs for humanity", and spotlight interviews of prominent designers. Also, "The Buzz" section in the "Design News" area is a great way to stay on top of the latest trends and developments in the field of industrial design

Materials Science and Technology Teacher's Handbook: Experiments/Demonstrations: Polymers
This chapter from the Materials Science and Technology Teacher's Handbook provides experiments and demonstrations involving polymers that can be used in a materials science and technology curriculum. These experiments are "designed to grab studentsâ attention, pull their minds from predictable everyday classroom activities, give them something to look forward to, and teach them some simple principles and properties used by materials scientists." Experiments include Slime, Polymer Foam Creations, Casting a Rubber Mold from RTV, and Epoxy Resin Casting. Drawings and diagrams help illustrate the concepts. This website from the Virginia Sea Grant program includes extensive resources on marine science education. Educator topics include web resources, field trips, classroom activities, professional development opportunities, and contact information for scientists, education specialists, and other marine science experts. Student resources include information on summer camps, mentorships, science fairs, and an "ask a scientist" feature. Site also includes links to information on such topics as aquaculture, seafood, and fisheries
