It can be a daunting question, particularly for newly minted PhDs, but this rather fine course from the OpenCourseWare initiative at MIT offers high-quality suggestions. The site includes a syllabus, calendar, readings, video discussions, assignments, and other related resources. In the Syllabus area, visitors can learn about the basic lesson plans for the course. The Readings area has some great material, including sections on Teaching Equations, Course Design, Lecture Planning and Performing, and Political Barriers To Educational Change.     NCSR: The Decline of Atlantic Cod - A Case Study

    This instructional guide is designed to provide instructors with lecture support on the topic of marine fisheries using a case study of the Atlantic cod to illustrate major issues. For centuries the Atlantic cod was the mainstay of fisheries based in southeast Canada and New England. However, in the early 1990s, a dramatic decline in cod stocks forced fishery managers to close some of the world's most productive fishing grounds. The ecological impacts of the decline and the economic impacts of the closures were dramatic. This module describes the historical context of the collapse of the cod fishery as well as assessments of the current status of the resource. Recovery efforts and the future of the fishery are also discussed.Instructional materials include student learning objectives, a general lecture outline, a PowerPoint presentation with detailed instructor notes and student handouts. Brief descriptions of other fisheries for development as case studies are also provided. Print, video and web-based resources that cover the topic are summarized and cited. Instructors who wish to obtain greater detail on any of the topics discussed in this module are encouraged to seek out these additional resources or those cited in the Comprehensive Resources for NCSR Marine Fisheries Series

MIT's popular OpenCourseWare Initiative has recently made the contents of Dr. Patricia Christie's course on kitchen chemistry available on this site. Visitors to the site can download the syllabus, take in some assigned readings (and recipes), and look over the assignments. The assignments include investigations that involve emulsifiers, ice cream, peer teaching, and pancakes, among other things. The site also includes links to helpful readings, such as those on chocolate, the health benefits of capsicum, and the world of gluten.     Exploring the Moon Educator Guide

    This educator's guide with activities promotes problem solving, communication skills and teamwork. Topics include lunar geology and regolith, distance to the moon, Apollo landing sites, and life support systems. Some of the activities involve the Lunar Sample Disk, a set of samples of lunar rocks and regolith embedded in a 15-cm diameter plastic disk. Disks are sent via registered mail to educators for one- to two-week loan periods. The package also includes the book 'Exploring the Moon', an annotated slide set of lunar images, and a collection of color photographs and descriptions of the six samples. The activities are divided into three units: Pre-Apollo, Learning from Apollo, and the Future. These correspond roughly to exercises that can be done before the Lunar Sample Disk arrives (Pre-Apollo), while it is there (Learning from Apollo), and after it has been returned (The Future)
