    Freshman Research Initiative

    The Freshman Research Initiative (FRI) at the University of Texas at Austin allows undergraduates the rather exciting opportunity to advance academically "while doing cutting-edge, original, publishable research" in a variety of fields. This website provides information about the FRI and how students can get involved, and for more casual users, there are a range of resources worth a look. In the Outreach area, visitors can learn how to take advantage of the FRI's cumulative wisdom through mentorship programs, science fairs, and so on. Moving on, the Sponsors and Collaborators area contains information about the FRI's partnerships with organizations such as the National Science Foundation and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. As a whole, the site is a great resource for other academic institutions seeking to emulate the success of the FRI

    Evergreen Valley College Increases Retention of both Female and Male Automotive Students by over 25%

    This page links to a case study of Evergreen Valley College's student retention strategies. The college has implemented a few key methods to increase retention of both female and male automotive students, including: -Changing the culture in introductory courses from one where "weeding out" students was normal to a culture focused on "screening in" students.-Using "modeling" in the classroom -- instructors model or demonstrate the lab, lecture and then have students do hands-on activities. Many instructors skip the "demonstration" step.-A literacy course using automotive terminology was developed for students in the course of the Project; this had been planned prior to the CalWomenTech Project.These strategies may prove useful for other community college programs looking to increase retention rates and attract new students

This process can be challenging, and this nice set of materials from Pennsylvania State University will be a boon to students in these fields. The site has five main sections: Introduction, Presentations, Correspondence, Formal Reports, and Other Documents. The Introduction area contains three helpful documents that provide insights on crafting the style of any given document and assessing the audience. Moving along, the Formal Reports area gives helpful suggestions on composing laboratory reports, theses, and dissertations. The site is rounded out by a glossary of writing and composition terms and additional references and resources

    This is a tutorial for IT Guru: Academic Edition, a network simulator used by network planners and operations engineers to do network planning and analysis. In this lab, students look at the interface of IT Guru and learn how it works. They also create a simple scenario to run, and collect/interpret statistics from the scenario. The tutorial was developed by CSUMB Computer Science and Information Technology student Kevan Riley. The zip file accompanying the video tutorial contains sample files for the IT Guru program and a PDF of instructions

    For educators who are continually looking for up-to-date, real-world examples of how mathematics impacts daily life, Yummy Math is a welcome ally. In fact, every article on the site seeks to link math to what is "relevant to our world today." For instance, a recent article presented some of the math-related possibilities for the upcoming release of the new iPhone 6S and 6S plus, suggesting that students explore past iPhone launch sales data in order to predict sales for the new model using bar graphs and scatter plots. Educators can scout the site by Genres (Holidays and Annual Events, Math and Food, Math and Science, Math and Social Studies, and others), as well as by grade level. While all activities are freely accessible, some educators may select to sign up for a membership, which provides extra services, such as solutions to activities, access to a wider variety of resources, and access to teaching tips
