    Women Now Nearly Half of San Diego Mesa Community College's Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Program

    This brief case study highlights San Diego's Mesa Community College's Geographic Information Systems program, and the strategies that program has adopted to recruit and retain female students. The program took part in the CalWomen Tech Project, which was a collaborative effort by several colleges to increase enrollment of female students in technical areas of study. Some of the strategies that worked for Mesa Community College are outlined here, including: -Identifying female role models in GIS and taking their photos for marketing collateral to be developed by IWITTS and:-Distributing recruitment posters, flyers, brochures and a CalWomenTech College Website section featuring female role models.This narrative, and the lessons that can be learned from the success of Mesa Community College in this area, would be useful for other community college and technical programs looking to increase their numbers of female students

    You've probably been to a playground, but have you been to the Geometry Playground? It's just as much fun, and it may change the way you think about geometry. Created by the good folks at the Exploratorium in San Francisco, this exhibit is meant to complement the traveling exhibit which has been featured in other science museums around the United States. The exhibit here contains three sections: Seeing, Moving, and Fitting Things Together. In the Seeing exhibit, visitors can make their way through a fine photo essay about the invisible geometry of light, while the Moving section gets interested parties up and exploring geometry with their bodies. Each of these sections has great photo essays, complemented by animations and fun activities

In this episode of ATETV, industry partnerships, energy education and laser and photonics technology are discussed. Community colleges encourage students in computer technology programs. These colleges build strong relationships with business leaders, creating a bond between the educational environment and the professional world. Programs in the areas of energy education and laser and photonics technology teach students skills that can be applied in different vocational settings, and such programs can be completed in as little as two years.
