NOAA Ocean Explorations Lesson Plans
This website provides access to over 160 lesson plans developed by scientists and educators during NOAA's 2001-2004 Ocean Explorer field seasons. Search by grade level, geographical region, subject, specific expedition, or keyword. Lessons correspond with a NOAA exploration, can be supplemented with daily mission logs, images and video. They include: Learning Objectives, Background Information, Evaluations, Extensions, Resources, Student Handouts, and more. Heading In a New Direction
The ATETV project delivers web-based videos to connect students to careers in advanced technology. In this episode of ATETV, fuel cell technology, technical communication skills and women in aviation are discussed. ATE programs are perfect for people who want to head back to school in order to change careers. The programs help students gain new skills or develop skills they may already have. Community colleges also provide students with core competencies such as writing and communications. Finally, the video takes a look at the aviation field from a womanâs perspective. The National Map
The National Map is an online, interactive map service published by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Users can create and print high-resolution shaded relief maps of a local area, a state, or the entire U.S. A variety of data layers are available, including administrative boundaries, geographic names, geology, and land use/land cover. The 'Find Place' tool allows users to find a location anywhere in the United States using latitude and longitude, U.S. National Grid coordinates, Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) coordinates, or a place name. The 'Identify' tool allows users to obtain the coordinates of any point in the U.S
Water Resources Data
This portal provides access to a large selection of real-time and archived data on stream flow and water quality for surface and groundwater. Links are provided to the National Water Information System Web Interface (NWISWeb), which accesses data collected at approximately 1.5 million sites in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. Data categories include current conditions information transmitted from selected surface and groundwater sites; descriptive site information; water flow and levels in streams, lakes, and springs; groundwater levels in wells; and chemical and physical data for all water sources. There is also a link to the 'Waterwatch' site, an interactive map that displays real-time stream-flow compared to historical conditions for the day of the year, as well as a link to the National Water Quality Assessment (NAWQA) data warehouse. Other links access materials on water use, acid rain, suspended sediment, and the Hydro-Climatic Data Network (HCDN)
Water Science Activity Center
This page features opinion surveys, challenge questions, questionnaires and true/false quizzes. Students can participate in an online survey to provide their opinions on water quality and supply, how water concerns rank with other environmental issues; and to vote for their favorite body of water. All answers go into a database and the results are displayed in a table so they can see how other participants answered
Saline Water and Salinity
This resource introduces students to the idea of saline water. Topics include how saline water is defined and how dissolved salt concentrations are expressed (parts per million). Parameters for the various ranges of salinity (fresh to highly saline, or seawater) are also presented, and there is a brief discussion of water quality considerations regarding saline water.
