Journal of Undergraduate Neuroscience Education
This sharp looking website is for the Journal of Undergraduate Neuroscience Education (JUNE) which "publishes peer-reviewed reports of innovations in undergraduate neuroscience education...[and] serves as a mechanism for faculty to exchange information...such as laboratory exercises, new media, curricular considerations, and teaching methods." Visitors will find the "Supplementary Materials" tab near the top of any page to contain movies, lab instructions, papers, and images. Some of the movies include an adult and juvenile "Crayfish Brain Movie," "Larval Dissection Movie" of a drosophila mutant, and "Leg Prep and Spine Stimulation" of a cockroach. The "Previous Issues" tab gives visitors the opportunity to read issues published since 2002. Recent pieces featured in JUNE include "Integrating Community Outreach into the Undergraduate Neuroscience Classroom", "Design Plans for an Inexpensive Tail Flick Analgesia Meter", and "Unquenchable Neuroscience."
NOAA: Aquatic Food Webs
This nice site from NOAA starts with a bold statement: "Big fish eat little fish; that's how the food cycle works." It's a fitting introduction to this exploration of aquatic food webs. Offered as part of NOAA's main Education Resources site, this site offers a dozen well-produced videos, lesson plans, and data sets divided into areas that include Background Information and Multimedia. These items include "Tagging of Pacific Pelagics," "Census of Marine Life Biodiversity," and "Components of a Food Web." Visitors can also look over the Features area near the bottom of the site, whose offerings range from a profile of the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary to a longitudinal study of sea trout in the food web. Finally, visitors can use the social media tabs to share resources from the site with colleagues and others
National Science Foundation: Resources for STEM Education
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has created this useful set of resources related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) for educators and others interested in these fields. Here visitors can look over the resources, which include full-text books, pamphlets, and an interactive website. First up is the book "Worms, Shadows, and Whirlpools," which represents a new way to think about science education for young children. Another resource, "World Watcher," is a website that offers a "supportive scientific visualization environment for the investigation of scientific data." Finally, the site also has a link to the innovative "Whyville" site. This site was created by James Bower of the California Institute of Technology to create a place where tweens can engage as virtual citizens in a safe online community community, create their own avatars, and also hang out with others interested in science, civics, government, and more. Falls of the Ohio State Park
Falls of the Ohio State Park, on the banks of the Ohio river, is home to 386 million year old fossil beds, among the largest naturally exposed Devonian fossil beds in the world. The interpretive center, featuring a video presentation and exhibit gallery, overlooks the fossil beds. There are several downloadable resources from the website including illustrated information on brachiopods, crinoids, and trilobites as well as activities to foster learning about life in the Devonian seas. In addition to the interpretive center, there are the Ohio River and Coral Reef Aquariums where visitors can view many species of fish, corals, and other invertebrates. While fossil collecting is prohibited, the park staff encourages visitors to explore and discover the many different types of fossils that can be found on the ancient sea bottom
