    NOAA: Carbon Cycle Collection

    No full text
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has recently updated its Education Resources website, and there are some fine changes worth nothing. One in particular is the updated section on climate. First-time visitors will note that the materials here are divided into five sections, which include Real World Data and Background Information. Educators will find that the homepage contains a great introduction to the operations and processes of the carbon cycle, and it's a great stand-alone resource for students new to the field. Moving along, the Lessons and Activities area includes six different resources, including Cycling Carbon Lab and Finding Carbon Sinks. Finally, visitors shouldn't miss the Career Profiles area which may serve to inspire young people to join the ranks of persons working as fuel scientists and geologists

Coral Bleaching: Making Our Oceans Whiter

    No full text
The Coral Bleaching: Making our Oceans Whiter lesson was developed by National Geographic. This lesson plan deals with coral reefs and the recent increase in coral bleaching. The students will be learning about the ecology of reefs, the habitats they create, the algal symbiosis that ends with bleaching, and the role of human impact. The plan also outlines a role-playing debate for the students, and an in-character written assignment to come up with a compromise to protect the reefs and the economies that depend on them. On this Starting Point page, teachers can find learning goals, teaching notes and tips, teaching materials, assessment hints and references and resources dealing with this exercise. It also describes the context in which the virtual tour, another feature of the webpage, is best used

    Contour Basics

    No full text
Contour Basics is an exercise designed to introduce students to contour plots. The Contour Activity is a great on-line resource that starts slowly and increases in difficulty. It teaches students basic techniques for generating contours, introduces students to the subtleties of generating contour plots with sparse data, provides many opportunities for students to assess their own progress and understanding and has complete on-line drawing capabilities. The exercise is geared toward atmospheric and oceanic sciences but is beneficial for all geoscience students. In addition to the exercise, this site includes information on teaching materials, teaching notes and tips, assessment suggestions and additional references. This activity is part of the Starting Point Collection: http://serc.carleton.edu/introgeo

    Rock Cycle Animations

    No full text
This site features Flash animations that illustrate various facets of the rock cycle. The visualizations depict rock-forming processes, such as erosion, transportation, deposition, cementation, crystallization, subduction, and eruption, that create sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks. They also show cooling environments that result in varied crystal sizes and demonstrate igneous rock classification. The animations can be paused and rewound to stress important points. These resources are suitable for use in lectures, labs, or other teaching activities

    Wetlands Restoration in the Everglades

    No full text
This instructional guide is designed to provide instructors with lecture materials and resources that describe the concepts and practice of wetland restoration using the restoration of the Everglades in South Florida as a case study. Student objectives, a general lecture outline and a more detailed PowerPoint presentation with instructor notes are provided. The general features of wetland restoration and some common elements are first discussed followed by an in-depth account of how these concepts are being implemented in the Everglades Ecosystem.Historical conditions in the Everglades are described as well as the primary drivers of environmental degradation in this region. The importance of broad-scale ecosystem-based approaches to restoration is emphasized.Instructors who are looking for videos or additional print and web-based resources on the topics covered here should consult the resources list provided at the end of this module where these resources are summarized and cited. This module includes a detailed transcript of a two-volume set of videos that provides excellent support for the topics covered in this module.Upon successful completion of this module students should be able to:* Define wetland restoration* Describe some common elements of wetland restoration projects* Describe the historical degradation that has occurred in the Everglades Ecosystem of South Florida* Outline the goals and methods of Everglades restoration* Identify common characteristics of successful wetland restoration project
