Pathways to ICT Education and Careers in San Francisco
This report documents research on organizations, programs and efforts relevant to ICT Pathways in San Francisco. The ICT Pathways Project aims to "gather strategic stakeholders in San Francisco to improve pathways to ICT education and careers, grow our own ICT workforce, meet employer ICT workforce demand, and improve our economy in the process." This 194 page document is available as a PDF for download
Nevada Information and Communications Technology Focus Group Analysis Report
This report documents the initiative of the College of Southern Nevada, Truckee Meadows Community College, and Western Nevada College to reach out to employers and other organizations to describe knowledge and skills needed by information and communications technology works. It also aims to "describe the current and projected employment opportunities for technicians" and "describe industry perceptions of colleges and community college graduates as potential employees" This 34 page document is available for download as a PDF
SCME YouTube Channel
The Southwest Center for Microsystems Education is a Regional Advanced Technology Education Center funded in part by the National Science Foundation. The center provides information and training on the applications and fabrication of microsystems devices. This page contains a collection of videos on Deposition, Photolithography, Micromachining, Pressure Sensors, DNA Hybridization, and a variety of other topics
Nanostructures and Nanomaterials
This page from Foothill-De Anza Community College describes a course on nanoscience for those who need an introduction to the subject. This course is the third in a five course series that leads to a certificate in nanoscience, nanotechnology, and nanomaterials engineering. Students will learn about a variety of nanonstructures and nanomaterials as well as the PNPA rubric, material phase, and crystal structure. The projects required by the class are also described
MedlinePlus: Videos and Cool Tools
MedlinePlus has a wide palette of interesting resources, and this corner of their prodigious website is well worth a close look. First-time visitors can start with the resources profiled on the website which include interactive videos on fighting colon cancer and how to screen for depression. Furthermore, the Calculators & Quizzes area includes an alcohol calorie calculator along with a "Can You Recognize a Heart Attack?" quiz. There's a bit of fun and whimsy in the Games area where one can learn about the immune system via the "Immune System Defender Game Scrub Club" and a clutch of activities about the importance of sleep. Also, the site includes a section titled "Understanding Medical Words" that decodes some of the basic medical terminology that would be encountered in a routine visit to the doctor
Gene Machine: The Lac Operon
The PhET project at the University of Colorado creates "fun, interactive, research-based simulations of physical phenomena." This particular one deals with the lac operon. Build a gene network! The lac operon is a set of genes which are responsible for the metabolism of lactose in some bacterial cells. Explore the effects of mutations within the lac operon by adding or removing genes from the DNA. The simulation is also paired with a user-contirubed Teaching Idea using the simulation in context that can be found near the bottom of the page. The simulation is also available in multiple languages
An Overview of Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) Technologies with Auto Electrical Labs
This module consists of a PowerPoint presentation, labs, and syllabus designed to enhance automotive electrical courses with HEV technologies and was developed through seed funding from the CAAT. The PowerPoint provides a general overview of HEVs and the technologies powering them. Itâs 190 slides and has two areas of focus: basic theory of operation and safety and service procedures. The following subjects are discussed: types of HEV systems (Ex: parallel, series, and series-parallel), safety when working with HEVs (Ex: isolating systems/disable high voltage circuits, high voltage gloves, and insulated tools), testing HEV components (Ex: insulation tests), electrical differences between similar components of standard vehicles and HEVs (Ex: voltage, starter, and air conditioning), transaxle integration, power steering, regenerative braking, and correct service procedures for HEV components (Ex: battery, jump start, and multimeter use).Differences between types of hybrid systems are compared for the Chevy Volt, Ford Escape Hybrid, and Toyota Prius. After viewing this presentation, a technician should have a basic understanding of HEVs' electrical systems and their differences from traditional vehicles when servicing. The labs supplementing the presentation cover HEV battery information, safety, system overview, insulation testing, and jump starting. For educators looking to modify current courses, the syllabus has highlighted fields where HEV technologies were incorporated into an automotive electrical course at Lewis and Clark Community College
MEMS Cantilevers - Sacrificial Layer Removal
This animation, created by Southwest Center for Microsystems Education (SCME), "illustrates the removal or etch of the sacrificial layer of silicon dioxide. Removing this layer allows the micro-cantilevers to move. Such cantilevers are used as sensors for a variety of applications." The supporting MEMS Cantilever Learning Modules and activities can be downloaded from the SCME website under Educational Materials
National Geographic: Maps
Many people have fond memories of the special maps created as inserts placed in the National Geographic magazine from time to time. This rather special section of the National Geographic's website provides interested parties with a dazzling array of thematic maps that document the European exploration of North America, ecological zones, and the world of the poet Basho. Visitors might do well to start by looking over the "Editors' Picks" area. Here they will find atlas jigsaw puzzles to play online and "EarthPulse: A Visual Guide to Trends." The "EarthPulse" area includes vital statistics about global population trends, economic opportunity, and more. The site also includes the "Atlas Explorer", which allows users to explore detailed political maps of the USA, Africa, Europe, and the world's oceans
Agricultural Technology Student: Farming & GPS/GIS
In this 4:23 video adapted from Pathways to Technology, learn why, to be a successful farmer today, you need the latest computer technology. Community college student Adam Sheppardâs family has been farming the same land for seven generations. The geographic information systems (GIS) and global positioning systems (GPS) technology he is studying in school can help farmers know how much seed to buy, where to plant, and how much compost or fertilizer to use. Adam's internship at a co-op farm allows him to apply what he's learned in the classroom. When finished with school, he plans to bring his knowledge back home to his family's farm. The video is accompanied by a background essay, standards, and discussion questions. Users who sign up for a free account can download the video as well
