ATE Student Success Stories: Gerald's Story
Gerald Kinyua moved from his homeland of Kenya hoping to get an education and explore a new career in chemistry. At first he found it difficult to negotiate the education system in a new country, until he connected with Northern Essex Community College. Now he feels right at home in his program and is ready to look for employment in his chosen field. To download this video and/or captions, visit: https://atecentral.net/index.php?P=StudentSuccessStorie
LIGA Micromachining Process Overview
This animation, created by Southwest Center for Microsystems Education (SCME), provides an overview of the LIGA micromachining process. Here, viewers will learn about the functionality of this process, including how its use for the "fabrication of high aspect ratio micro-sized components. This animation was produced by the Southwest Center for Microsystems Education and based on a process overview by HT Microanalytical." Further resources can be found on the SCME website in the MEMS Micromachining Overview, and select Educational Materials to access more learning modules
The Blood Glucose Monitor Lab
This lab, presented by the National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network, teaches students which patients, from a variety of samples, have diabetes. Students will measure "...the glucose concentration of several synthetic blood and urine samples..." This contains a 13-page teacher guide, that provides preparation information, materials needed, and instructional procedure. The lab also includes a student guide, PowerPoint presentation on Biosensors, as well as a PowerPoint Jeapordy Game relating to the subject
Additive Manufacturing: Processes and Standard Terminology
This classroom module will give students "an introduction to Additive Manufacturing Terminology used in manufacturing and in the classroom." The lesson focuses on orienting students to the standard ASTM International terminology used in additive manufacturing and explore the basic processes used in the field, including rapid prototyping, stereolithography, fused deposition modeling, selective layer sintering, and others. The lesson is intended to be delivered in lecture format and should take approximately 1 hour. Evaluation questions are included, and the information can be adapted for students from late middle school through early community college education
Biotechnology: Production Support Associate
In this 2:34 video excerpt from Pathways to Technology, meet Suzanne Pooler, a biotechnology production support associate, whose work contributes to cancer treatment. As a production support associate, Suzanne supports scientists' research by keeping cancer cells alive in test tubes. Without the right environment and nourishment, the cells would die and the research would have to start over. Suzanne discusses why she left her old job as an administrative assistant to attend community college and study science. She also explains why she loves her new job working in the field of biotechnology. The video is accompanied by a background essay, standards alignment, and discussion questions. Creating a Community of Learners
In this professional development video from Getting Results, Dr. John Bransford, professor of education at the University of Washington School of Education, and two science instructors discuss the effect a positive classroom environment has on student success. Bransford points out that much of learning is social. Watch as students build knowledge through a âthink-pair-share.â In another class, the instructor creates an environment of trust where students can make mistakes. Finally, the learning scientist explains that building community celebrates individual contributions and that people liberate their minds through learning from diversity. The video runs 4:39 and is accompanied by a background essay and discussion questions. Users who sign up for a free account can save the resource and download the video as well
Engaging Students in Lecture and Lab
In this professional development video from Getting Results, students and their instructors discuss how lab time reinforces what is taught in lecture. One instructor says his goal is to prepare students through lecture, and then apply the learning in a lab. In this video, the students have to understand a mathematical function in order to make a robot work. When students get frustrated in the lab, the instructor guides them with questions. One student says the lab gets results for students by âhammering homeâ the content. The instructor concurs, saying that he avoids telling his students how to do the problem. Instead, he encourages them to grapple with it themselves. The video runs 6:15 and is accompanied by a background essay and discussion questions. PBCL in an Information Technology Class
For Problem-Based Case Learning (PBCL), student teams must develop and present solutions to real-world challenges. In this video from Making Learning Real, IT students use PBCL processes and tools to explore a business problem and put forth possible solutions. The instructor serves as a facilitator, supporting students as they create networking plans for a new retail store. While solving this problem, students also develop their teamwork skills. The video runs 0:38 and is accompanied by a background essay and discussion questions. PBCL Stage 9: Feedback & Evaluation
With Problem-Based Case Learning (PBCL), students work in teams to develop and present solutions to real-world problems. In this video from Making Learning Real, students in an HTML class present their Web sites to the leader of a local non-profit. Then the instructor explains how she evaluates studentsâ work and talks about some of the projectâs outcomes. The video runs 1:16 and is accompanied by a background essay and discussion questions.
