    PBCL in an HTML Class

    In this video from Making Learning Real about Problem-Based Case Learning (PBCL), an instructor and a business partner have posed a business problem to an HTML class. The business partner is a local community service organization, Feline Hotline. The problem is that Feline Hotline needs a Web site. Student teams present their solutions to the instructor, the business partner, and a guest expert (a Web design instructor).     The Colorado State University has a rather wonderful set of online resources designed to help people become better writers. Most of these materials are offered right here on the Writing at Colorado State University website, where visitors will find ten different thematic guides. These guides deal primarily with writing in engineering, and they include Communicating as a Civil Engineer, Engineering Proposals, and Environmental Policy Statements. On the right-hand side of the homepage, visitors will find sections like Writing Processes and Writing Documents. These areas have more detailed areas like Starting to Write, Revising & Editing, and Publishing. Taken as a whole, these sections offer a broad range of specific guides to becoming a better writer. Finally, the site contains links to other relevant sites from university and college writing centers

    Estimating the Time Needed for Mitosis

    In this lab activity from the Biotechnology Alliance for Suncoast Biology Educators, students will learn the phases of mitosis and determine the approximate time it takes for plant and animal cells to pass through each of the four stages of mitosis. They do this by counting the number of onion root tip cells and whitefish blastula cells in each of the four phases of mitosis and in interphase. It also includes discussion questions that can be used to illustrate the concept with out completing the activities. Visitors can dive right in via the For Educators area, which includes topical headings like Higher Education, Informal Education, and Current Opportunities. Clicking on the Higher Education tab will take visitors to the Have You Seen? area which features resources like the "What is a Planet?" lithograph and a special website about the 50th anniversary of solar system exploration. Moving on, visitors can click on NASA Television to watch excerpts from NASA's informational station. Another fun feature is the Do-It-Yourself Podcasts area. Here, interested parties can work with existing NASA audio and video clips to create their own unique media product. Finally, visitors can use the Read It section to learn about new grant opportunities, campus science activities, and so on

    The Canadian Council for Geographic Education (CCGE) is serious about geographic education. This site provides a range of educational materials for those with a passion for the spatial sciences. The materials here are divided into four areas: Canadian Atlas Online, Lesson Plans, Classroom Activities, and Teaching About Geographical Thinking. In the Canadian Atlas Online area, visitors can learn about "the stories that define all Canadians." Visitors to this section can create their own customized maps of Canada and read through a glossary of terms. Moving on, the Lesson Plans area contains over 100 plans that deal with the environment, cultural geography, oceanography, and international development. The Geomatics area is quite a find, as it brings together GIS-based activities to explore topics like Nunavut and crime mapping. Finally, the Classroom Activities area contains some great poster maps of the Mackenzie Delta and the South Gulf Islands
