A Bilingual Identity-oriented Taxonomy of Nonlinear Dynamic Motivational Strategies

    Get PDF
To fill the gap of a comprehensive taxonomic framework that includes language and identity-related concepts, a taxonomy of bilingual identities was arranged at psychological, social and cultural levels drawing on Schelling’s Theory of Symbolic Language. The proposed taxonomy enables addressing nonlinearity and dynamicity of L2 motivation by utilizing nonlinear dynamic motivational strategies. Addressing the psychological, social, and cultural dimensions of L2 motivation from a bilingual perspective enables L2 teachers to keep the identified motivational factors in motion regardless of their homogeneity or heterogeneity throughout the learning-teaching process. Addressing the diverse nature of individual learner differences without pushing the learner group toward equal and static performance despite the motivational heterogeneity at the cost of forming a cohesive learner group is the main theoretical implication of the study

Since its inception in 2007, psychological capital has been gaining more and more attention. Nonetheless, zero studies had been done on the psychometric properties of the 24-item Psychological Capital Questionnaire (PCQ) in Malaysia. Therefore, the present study examined the reliability and validity of the questionnaire. A total of 420 Malaysian government employees participated in this study. Findings revealed that the PCQ demonstrated a satisfactory level of psychometric properties in Malaysia after five items were excluded. Hence, the Psychological Capital Questionnaire (PCQ) could be used for Malaysian employees to discover positive contributions to psychological capital in the Malaysian workplace setting.Â

AbstractThe prevalence of smoking among adolescents is relatively high and continues to increase. Providing information or knowledge about the dangers of smoking and encouragement to quit smoking is necessary. Discussion and outbound methods are expected to improve knowledge and attitudes towards smoking. This study aimed to identify the improvement in knowledge and attitudes towards smoking following discussion and outbound activities. This was a quasi-experimental study with a total of 30 subjects aged 12-25 years old recruited using the consecutive method. Subjects were requested to complete a pre-test and post-test about their knowledge of smoking as well as an attitude questionnaire after participating in a discussion and outbound (outdoor motivational training). The paired T-test or Wilcoxon test was employed in the statistical analysis (95% confidence level, α = 0.05). A total of 11 adolescents were smokers (36.7%). The knowledge pre-test and post-test scores were 70.83±13.47 and 75.21±16.37 (p=0.063), while those for attitudes were 77.73±11.26 and 78.4±10.35 (p=0.674), respectively. To conclude, there was no improvement in the knowledge or attitudes towards smoking after the knowledge transferred through discussion and outbound. Keywords: Outdoor motivational training, smoking, discussion, knowledge, attitude

    Get PDF
Being diagnosed with cancer in some females results in impaired psychological wellbeing (PWB). This study aimed to compare and analyze the PWB between cervical and breast cancer survivors (CCS and BCS) especially in each stage of survivorship. This cross-sectional study involved 47 CCS and 58 BCS (n=105) from three districts in Surabaya, Indonesia. QOL-CS was used for collecting data. Independent sample T test, one way ANOVA test, and linear regression test were used in data analysis (α<0.05).  Results showed that most respondents had sufficient PWB. PWB between cases and survivorship stages was not significantly different (p=0.067 overall, p=0.425 in CCS, and p=0.135 in BCS). In CCS, appearances and self-concept were significantly changing over time (p=0.032 and p=0.007 respectively); meanwhile in BCS, life acceptance, happiness, memory/concentration, and usefulness were continuously changed (p=0.044, p=0.019, p=0.020, and p=0.018 respectively). Appearances were the best predictor of PWB in both cases (p=0.000), but it gave more influences in BCS than CCS (52.6% vs. 29.7%).Keywords: breast cancer, cancer, cancer survivorship, cervical cancer, psychological wellbein

Based on the analysis, results were obtained that the WBWS model adaptated had fulfilled the goodness-of-fit criteria, meaning that there was compatibility between the developed model and the empirical data. Furthermore, this research was hoped to provide contribution in the measurement and development of research of career well-being on working mothers.Â

Abstract The aim of the study was to investigate victimization from dowry-related aggression and mental health concomitants in a sample of educated women in Pakistan. A questionnaire was completed by 569 women. The mean age was 31.4 years (SD 9.1). The questionnaire included two scales for measuring dowry-related aggression and four scales for measuring mental health concomitants.  The levels of victimization from dowry-related aggression were relatively low in the sample. Aggression carried out by the husband and the mother-in-law correlated highly with each other. The most common single act by both husbands and mothers-in-law was forcing the wife to give her gold to her mother-in-law or sister-in-law. Women who were more than average victimised from dowry-related aggression had significantly higher scores on anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, and somatisation. Aggression carried out by the mother-in-law showed higher predictive power on all four mental health concomitants than aggression by the husband. Somatic symptoms of the daughter-in-law showed the highest association with aggression carried out by the mother-in-law. Victimization from dowry-related aggression was strongly associated with negative mental health outcomes. Aggression carried out by the mother-in-law was more strongly associated with them than aggression carried out by the husband

Effectiveness of Psychosocial-Based Resilience Intervention on Reducing Negative Emotional States among Schizophrenia Caregivers

    Get PDF
Schizophrenia caregivers are chronically exposed to a high level of negative emotional states such as depression, anxiety, and stress. Many studies have explored the problem among caregivers, but there remains to be limited evidence in the use of psychotherapeutic intervention to reduce schizophrenia caregivers’ psychological adversities. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of psychosocial-based resilience intervention in reducing the negative emotional states of schizophrenia caregivers. The one group pre-post quasi-experimental design was conducted to five participants. Following the six sessions of training and two-weeks of follow-up, participants showed a significant reduction of negative emotional states (p= .007), measured using the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21). Furthermore, dimensions of negative emotional states were also significantly reduced i.e., depression (p= .008), anxiety (p= .015), and stress (p= .016). These results provide evidence that a psychosocial-based resilience program can effectively reduce the negative emotional states of schizophrenia caregivers. Keywords: Resilience, Depression, Anxiety, Stress, Family Caregiver, Psychosi
