    Moist wood and microwaves

    Get PDF
In the thesis the dependance of the optical properties of wood on the wood moisture are studied in the microwave region. Structure and properties of wood with the emphasis on anisotropic optical properties are summarised in the first chapter. Next the methods for changing and measuring wood moisture are described. It turns out that the most accurate measurements of the changes of wood moisture are obtained by the so called gravimetric method. Furthermore, this method is simple and easy to perform, its only drawback is the lack of precisely determining the zero moisture state of wood. Detailed description of the procedures for changing wood moisture as well as for determining birefringence and both absorption coefficients of wood are the core content of the thesis. Finally, two important findings result from the study. Firstly, we show that standard school microwave set, including a transmitter and a receiver, enables one to measure birefringence as well as both absorption coefficients to a reasonable accuracy at all observable wood moistures. This result is particularly important for all physics teachers from the point of view of using wood and microwaves as means to show anisotropic properties of matter. In addition, our measurements confirm that both, birefringence and absorption of microwaves in wood increase with increasing wood moisture. We show that birefringence can be modelled as a linear function of wood moisture whereas the increase of absorption of microwaves with wood moisture is modelled significantly better with a parabolic function. Collaterally we noticed that wood moisture is difficult to measure accurately and that it is quite a complex and time consuming task to change wood moisture in a controlled way

Experience of a mother dealing with a child's special needs and assistance strategies

Children with special needs represent a very diverse group. Among them are children with oral-linguistic disorders, mental growth disorders and autistic disorders. All the previously mentioned disorders cause a number of problems regarding a child's motor control and in its oral-linguistic, social and intellectual fields, which affect the family dynamic. It is not easy for parents to accept a child with special needs and their diagnoses, as it is a hard and long-term process for the parents because they have to face their own feelings and emotions of guilt, helplessness, concern, anger and many others. It also includes gathering information, consistent work and searching for suitable help strategies. Parents constantly adjust their expectations, focused on the image of a »normal« child, to their child's particularities. Incomprehension and the pressure of the local society make their task even harder. It is necessary for parents to maintain quality cooperation with professionals while such cooperation can be achieved within the cooperative model of working together. This master's thesis is focusing on a mother's personal experience of dealing with her daughter's oral-linguistic, physical, social and intellectual development problems as well her personal involvement in the process of her daughter's empowerment. The mother's experience in the form of records is combined with underlying expert opinion and the daughter's diagnoses. The extended research represents the applied qualitative research method including an extensive processing of the child's personal file and partially structured interviews with 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade teachers. The daughter's main problems since birth have been particularly in the field of motor control. Due to distinct muscle tone disorder, overexcitement, slower and atypical physical development the daughter was regularly undergoing neuro-physiotherapy. Since the problems have gradually started to appear since her second birthday in all the previously mentioned fields, the daughter has been diagnosed as a child with moderate oral-linguistic disorders. A suspicion of autistic disorder was also suggested. Later, she was diagnosed as a child with mild mental disorder. While despite all the extra professional help and consistent work during pre-school period there was no essential improvement, progress started to appear more distinctly in the 2nd grade of elementary school. Daily communication between parents and teachers as well as equivalent and respectful relationship, searching for mutual solutions and the daughter’s increasing motivation for school work and knowledge proved to be quite important. Specific work and help strategies during pre-school and school period are demonstrated along with the material that was used, didactic tools, photographs of daughter’s drawings and work from her mother’s personal documentation. The case study is not the basis for any kind of generalization but it can help to understand the distress of parents who have children with special needs, it can also help to understand children as well as the importance of work and assistance within the scope of a child’s abilities

Spelling awareness of preschool teachers in kindergartens in Pomurje region and their view on their own professional development in the linguistic area

In my degree paper, I primarily focused on the grammatic awareness of kindergarten teachers in Prekmurski kindergartens and their point of view on professional development. The theoretical part will define literary and colloquial language as well as present the role of the Slovenian language in the field of education. I learned the entire process of education is conducted in the formal Slovenian language. In the places with national minorities where there is the present influence of another language pedagogy workers especially need to excel in their knowledge of the Slovenian language. The key element is the quality of communication skills. About which we must be critical about and keep improving them. The main theoretical part links the following imperial part by showing the structure of a formal invitation and notice. Slovenian language is constantly changing in line with today's society; therefore, kindergarten teacher must be able to search for innovative ways on how to better their known knowledge and discover ways to seek a new one. This is closely connected with professional development which enables career and personal growth. Every pedagogy worker knows how to get around in various stages of professional development. Susceptibility to change, self-criticism, and desire for growth are different in every one of them. The continuation of education is mainly dependent on the individual but co-workers and directing staff are also crucially important. Discoveries deliver changes that must be introduced into the workspace in a way that brings quality for an extended amount of time. In the imperial part, I will show the results of a questionnaire that was filled out by 63 kindergarten teachers working in Prekmurski kindergartens. The questionnaire was conducted in line with the quantitative paradigm. In addition, I used the descriptive method of pedagogy research. The results showed that former education and knowledge of orthography are unconnected. Concerning the question in which participants had to form a short official text, we can see there were made an average of 5.31 mistakes, that were mostly of the orthographic kind. It was proven that the participants possess a bad pragmatic ability, as nobody implemented the necessary elements of an official text completely correctly. Results show that asked kindergarten teachers do not participate and are uninterested in any additional linguistic educational plans. Kindergarten teachers take up a crucial part in the educational process of children therefore they should be more aware of the linguistic importance and correct use of Slovenian formal language. Research showed that the participants do not excel in orthography and pragmatical abilities or are limited abilities at an incredibly low level. Because they are role models for young generations, they should and have to be more self-critical and motivated for funder education in linguistic skills

Reasons for choosing a public or montessori kindergarten

    Get PDF
In the theoretical part of the diploma thesis entitled “Reasons for Choosing a Public or Montessori Kindergarten”, I defined preschool education, its development in Slovenia and the providers of preschool education. I outlined the program which manages the operation of public and Montessori kindergartens, defined the funding for kindergartens, the founder as well as the role of adults in kindergarten. I also touched on the legal rights of parents when choosing a program and during the child's enrolment in kindergarten. In the empirical part of the diploma thesis, I made a survey questionnaire, which was completed by parents of preschool children. I was mainly interested in the reasons why parents decide on a certain kindergarten program, how important is the program during this choice and to what extent are parents aware of their legal right to choose a kindergarten. With the obtained answers or results in the survey questionnaire, I was able to answer the research questions in the empirical part of my diploma thesis

Development of environmental competences in elementary school at the subject of science

    Get PDF
The main purpose of this research was to explain the development of students’ environmental competences, specifically connected with waters. That is why an innovative didactic model has been developed in order to help with the development and formation of quality and permanent students’ environmental competences. Innovative didactic model about waters was applied in the experimental group, while the same content about water was taught to the students of the control group, but without the model application. Results show that those students who were more successful in the subject Science, have shown statistically significant better general knowledge about environmental contents than the less successful ones. Results show that experimental group students that have been learning the contents of water through innovative didactic model, have shown statistically significantly better attitude towards Science than the students of the control group that have learnt the contents of water in traditional way. Also, students of the experimental group were statistically significantly more successful on the delayed achievement test II, which was applied four months after learning with innovative didactic model, in comparison with the students of the control group. The experimental group students have shown statistically significantly higher levels of situational interest than the students of the control group. Results of the research have brought scientifically important findings on the field of Science didactics, especially environmental education, since they have given an in-depth view in the processes of forming concepts about environmental contents, specifically connected with occurrences in hydrosphere. In applicative meaning, the obtained results can be used as reliable and scientifically approved guidelines for preparing curriculums, diverse study material and university education of pre-service teachers on the first and second level and in-service professional development programmes in the area of environmental education

Problem – centered approach in art class at second triennium in primary school

Based on the studied literature and research to date, we determined that modern work methods, such as problem solving method of teaching, also include a teaching method, where children, under the surveillance of a teacher, acquire knowledge on their own, connecting school situations with real life events. The acquired knowledge is more permanent and useful; what is more, all fields – cognitive, affective and psychomotor – develop as well. Teachers organise problem solving lessons in a way where pupils gradually acquire knowledge on terms related to art on their own, while at the same time they create their art projects in a creative and original manner. Teachers base the planning of problem solving art lessons on different starting points, trying to conceptualise an artistic problem, the starting points of which can be either terms related to art, an art motif or an art technique. Taking into account all information mentioned, we decided to study in our master's thesis the differences between lessons, based on a problem solving method of teaching and a non-problem solving method of teaching. In the empirical part of the master's thesis, we determined whether pupils are more motivated in problem solving lessons and whether they are more original in creating their art projects. We were also interested in identifying the lesson during which the children were most motivated and original, based on different starting points of conceptualizing an art problem solving task. The research adopted a qualitative approach and used a descriptive method of pedagogical research. It included four classes of four-graders of a selected primary school. In order to collect research data, we analysed pupils' art projects and observed the dynamic in class. By studying the selected topic, we wanted to encourage class teachers to include problem solving method of teaching in art lessons, thus contributing to pupils' development of craft skills, personal traits, creativity and cognitive development

Promoting pre-reading and pre-writing skills of preschool children who are in the first age group

In the start of my thesis I defined and described three terms: literacy, pre-reading and pre-writing, which are crucial for understanding the theoretical part of my diploma. I focused on early literacy and compared it with the pre-reading and pre-writing skills. By studying Slovenian and foregine literature I managed to compare different views and opinions of authors on the topic of early literacy. I then proceeded to focus on trying to find differences between girls and boys in pre-reading and pre-writing skills. I also wrote some activities for preschool children, which help them with early literacy. The main interest of my diploma thesis was to determine the impact of early literacy in preschool children who are in the first age group (1-3 year olds). In the empirical part of the diploma thesis I first determined the level of pre-reading and pre-writing skills of children from the experimental group and the children from the control group. The research included 20 children aged from 1 to 3 years old. Both groups had to do some literacy based activities which were made to help me understand their level of literacy skills. For this I used a checklist that I made in advance and used while the children were doing the activities. For the next two months I was implementing 10 activities that help develop literacy into the experimental group. After two months I repeated the test to see the level of pre-reading and pre-writing skills in both of the groups and compared the results. My goal was to find out which pre-reading and pre-writing skills were the least developed in the first aged children's group (1-3 year olds). I was also interested in the level of efficiency of the pre-writing and pre-reading activities I did with the experimental group of children. With the experiment I came to the conclusion that the pre-writing and pre-reading activities managed to increase the level of literacy in children who were in the experimental group. My research showed that children's least developed skills related to literacy are skills of visualization and differentiation. With the empirical part of my thesis I have proven that encouragement of pre-writing and pre-reading activities positively affects children's speech and language development

Development of Slovenian school in Toronto and their contribution to the education and preservation of Slovenian identity

In the master's thesis, we discussed the Slovenian school of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Parish in Toronto. We reviewed the literature and in the theoretical part, firstly, the history of the migration of Slovenes to the territory of today's city of Toronto is presented: who were the first emigrants, why the emigration occurred and how it went through different periods. We researched the beginnings of the first Slovenian school at the parish of Our Lady of the Miraculous and its successor, which is still the only one operating in the territory of the metropolis. In addition to the presentation of schools, we also briefly presented theorganizations that had a positive impact on the interconnection of immigrants. In the last part of the theoretical analysis, we described the problems that the first emigrants faced and the problems present today. For the empirical part, we visited the city of Toronto, where we obtained the data and information. We conducted interviews with the principal of the Slovenian school, teachers, priests, and individual elderly emigrants and the management of the retirement home Lipa. The master's thesis presents the results of all information collected through conversations. We wanted to investigate how a Slovenian school works, how many students they have, what problems they face, how teacher education is regulated, who finances them, prescribes the material and how they are connected with the Republic of Slovenia. Part of the empirical work is the analysis of teaching materials (Čas za slovenščino in Materina beseda) and a three-week visit to the Republic of Slovenia as a part of the Youth Summer School. Some of the stories of the elderly are presented in the context of immigrant stories

Effect of distractors in multiple choice tasks on solving performance in the Čmrlj physics competition

    Get PDF
The Čmrlj competition is a competition in physics. The competition is held for students studying first year physics in high school. The curriculum of the competition includes the topics of physics in middle school. In this paper, we analyse the tasks that appeared in the Čmrlj competition in the school years 2017/2018, 2018/2019, 2019/2020 and 2020/2021. We analyse student success in a similar way as it is done at the national assessment of physics knowledge. For each year group, we divide students into four different groups, based on their overall scores. Based on these groups of students, the tasks are divided into five groups that reflect how successfully a particular task was completed. The main objective of the paper is to find out which characteristics of the tasks have a significant impact on how successful students are in solving these tasks. Since the Čmrlj competition consists entirely of multiple-choice questions, we try to find out what influence the individual answers offered have on how successful students are in solving these tasks. In addition to analysing how successful students are in solving the selected tasks at the competition, we also investigate to what extent one can compare or combine the general characteristics of the measured knowledge at the competition and at the national assessment of physics knowledge
