    Musical fairy tale in preschool

    Get PDF
The main purpose of this diploma work is to study the frequency and ways in which a musical fairy tale appears in the practice of the preschool period. In the theoretical part, we presented the role of music in the child's holistic development and defined the musical development of the preschool child. We defined a fairy tale as such and then we focused on a musical fairy tale. We described its characteristics, explained its significance and impact on children's development, and described the steps of performing a musical fairy tale (from planning to the performance itself). At the end of the theoretical part, we have given some examples of musical fairy tales by different authors. In the empirical part, we used a quantitative research method, namely an online questionnaire, to check the frequency of realization of a musical fairy tale and to determine possible differences between the frequency of realization of musical fairy tales in first and second age group. We also identified ways of realization and the types of musical tales used by pre-school teachers. We also checked the pre-school teacher’s opinion on the importance and impact of musical fairy tales on children's overall development and motivation for further musical involvement. The data were processed with Microsoft Office Excel, analyzed in terms of content, tabulated, and graphically displayed and interpreted. We found that most educators include a musical fairy tale in musical activities and most often perform it a few times a year or less. The results showed that pre-school teachers of the second age group perform musical fairy tales slightly more often than pre-school teachers of first age group. We found that most educators use both types of musical fairy tales (known authors and their own) and they perform them vocally and instrumentally. The research has shown encouraging results, as most pre-school teachers involve children in musical fairy tales and are aware of the importance of their participation. A larger percentage of pre-school teachers believe that a musical fairy tale influences a child's holistic development and motivation for further musical involvement

Effects of hypnosis on attention and working memory: electrophysiological correlates during dual visual oddball task

    Get PDF
In the last decade we have witnessed some newly restored interest about therapeutic effects of hypnosis and studies that utilize hypnotic suggestions to directly research broad spectrum of cognitive phenomena and also as valuable tool to diagnosticize pathological processes and states. Maybe this shows a fresh trend in development of research approaches on the fields of cognitive and clinical neuroscience (Oakley, & Halligan, 2013). In the research, electroencephalograph (EEG) was used to determine the effects of medical hypnosis on attention and working memory in comparison with control condition and condition of effort justification. 21 participants voluntarily solved phenomenology questionnaire PCI (Phenomenology of Consciousness Inventory, Form 1) and were according to their results (susceptibility to hypnosis) divided into three groups (Pekala, 2009). Experiment started with first dual-task oddball as control and continued in a crossover sequence of the two treatments (hypnosis, effort justification), so second and third tests were preceded by either receiving medicinal hypnosis treatment or watching non-specific relaxation videos as a form of effort justification. Task performance efficiency was determined by participant’s responses to visual display of target (keystroke) for attention and distractor stimuli (memorizing number of displays) for working memory. Analysis of variance of EEG results for attention showed that condition of therapy with medicinal hypnosis had a statistically significant effect in comparison to the effects of control condition for all groups of participants, as did reveal EEG results for working memory, but only for the group of participants, highly susceptible to hypnosis. All comparisons to the effects of effort justification condition were proven to be statistically insignificant. According to our findings we can partialy confrim that therapy with medcinal hypnosis has a beneficial effect on attention and working memory

Teaching English as a foreign/second language students with specific learning difficulties

Various European Commission policy documents highlight the impor- tance of pluri/multilingual education and provide a number of arguments for such a policy; for example, (1) individuals who learn more languages have bet- ter personal and professional opportunities, (2) multilingual societies foster cultural awareness, mutual understanding and social cohesion, and (3) mul- tilingual workers with intercultural competences are a vital resource for help- ing businesses succeed and grow in global markets (European Commission, 2012). The language that is most taught and assessed as a first foreign language is English: 97% of all young Europeans study English as a first foreign language. Eurydice reports that, in almost all European countries, English is the foreign language learnt by most students during primary and secondary education. It is also a mandatory foreign language in nearly all education systems that stipulate a particular foreign language that all students must study (Eurydice, 2017)

Study programme of Arts Therapy and the status of arts therapy in Slovenia

    Get PDF
In Slovenia, we are celebrating 25 years of existence of the study programme Arts Therapy or “Help through Art” as we call the study in the scientific field of arts therapy, which is being implemented at the Faculty of Education in Ljubljana. 78 specialists and masters of Arts Therapy have completed their studies. Students are focused on the implementation and development of practice and theory in the field of education, health care and other social environments. When reviewing the professional literature and scientific publications, we did not find any research, review or insight into the work of arts therapists in our country. The purpose of the research is to determine the status of the field of arts therapy in the Slovenian environment. The theoretical part of the thesis includes: a presentation of the scientific discipline of arts therapy with some definitions and areas; the therapeutic factors; different theoretical frames and approaches; the triad relationship in the therapeutic process; social environments, and the effectiveness of arts therapies. Afterwards, the theoretical part switches to the field of arts therapy in the Slovenian environment with a presentation of the development of the study programme Arts Therapy (from the concepts that led to the creation of the specialist study programme to today's second-cycle master's study), of the special features of the study programme, and of the employment opportunities for graduates. In the empirical part of the thesis, a qualitative approach with a descriptive research method is presented. With the help of the open-ended questions in the online questionnaire, we studied the opinions, attitudes and experiences of specialists, masters and students of the study programme “Help through Art” regarding their status and professional activity. The results of the research will contribute to the scientific field of arts therapy in Slovenia, to the promotion of arts therapy in Slovenia, and will aid our efforts to improve the status of the arts therapist profession

    Primary teachers' attitudes towards multilingualism

    Get PDF
Multilingualism is omnipresent daily. It enhances its meaning when we are fully aware of it, discuss and encourage it. A school is an institution that ought to encourage multilingualism and raise it to a higher level. However, it is only possible if all the school employees (focusing mainly on primary school teachers) have a positive attitude towards multilingualism. The forming of attitude towards it is influenced by many factors - from the first encounter with languages at home, in kindergarten, in primary school, in secondary school and in any further education. In my thesis I focus on primary school teachers who need to have a positive attitude to multilingualism themselves if they desire to encourage their students to form a positive attitude towards multilingualism as well. Multilingualism is discussed in many official documents such as the White paper on education in the Republic of Slovenia, law books and rulebooks on upbringing and education as well as by the European Council which defines how to spread and encourage multilingualism in countries of the European Union. Due to many advantages of multilingualism in each individual, we have decided to research the standpoints of primary school teachers as they have an extensive role in the lives of children. My thesis was written as part of the project Languages matter, whose main goal was to establish which factors support and which obstruct the creation of a supportive learning environment to develop multilingualism in the Slovene school environment. An online questionnaire was designed and administred at 4 higher education institutions, 10 secondary schools, 16 primary schools and 4 kindergartens. For the purpose of this thesis only the data from primary schools was analysed. In addition to 6 interviews performed with primary school teachers we received 272 questionnaires. We interviewed 3 language teachers, one subject teacher and 2 primary education teachers who taught at the time in Slovenian primary schools. Four variables were selected to observed, namely how the age, the region of residence, the possibility of visiting a foreign country and the school subject influence the attitudes of primary school teachers towards multilingualism. We have established that primary school teachers have a positive attitude towards multilingualism and that with such teachers we can plan a bright future in the light of multilingualism

Impact of classroom instruction on fourth graders' knowledge and attitudes towards bumblebees

People often encounter bumblebees and yet don't know much about them. Bumblebees have faced many problems in recent decades, too many of which have resulted in decline in species diversity, with other negative impacts on flora and fauna as well as on natural diversity. Many people have their first interactions with bumblebees in an early age, when they encounter them in songs, fairy tales, cartoons, toys and decorative materials. These encounters give children certain concepts about bumblebees, some of which may be wrong, misconceptions. Children also develop positive or negative attitudes towards animals, based on their experiences and interactions in social settings. By familiarising children with bumblebees and providing information about them, by implementing it in formal education where students build their knowledge independently, their knowledge about and attitudes towards bumblebees can be influenced. The aim of this study was to provide information concerning student attitudes towards and knowledge of bumblebees. We surveyed 22 Slovene primary school students between 9 and 10 years of age. We gathered information by questionary with closed and open questions, the questionary also included drawing and species identification tasks. The data was quantitatively and qualitatively analysed. Knowledge increased with higher grades but only with a small effect size. The attitude of students towards bumblebees was generally positive; however, this positivity declined with increasing grade of the participants. This correlation also had a small effect size. Our results are discussed, with a particular focus on future educational demand. The results indicate basic knowledge of bumblebees accompanied by several misconceptions. The attitudes of students towards bumblebees as pollinators and their conservation were generally positive. Experiential learning carried out in several hours of activities in which students participated turned out to have had positive effects on students' knowledge of and attitudes towards bumblebees

Impact of visual impairments on the quality of life

    Get PDF
Due to its multidimensionality, the concept of quality of life is difficult to define and even more difficult to measure. Vision loss is merely one of many factors that affect the assessment of quality of life. However, because it interferes with the functioning of an individual as a whole in all areas of life, it can lower the quality of life. The prevalence of visual impairment and blindness in the world is also increasing with the growing number of the elderly population, which is most often exposed to vision loss. With improved living and health conditions, life expectancy is increasing, and with it, the expected greater prevalence of visual impairment and blindness in the future. Therefore, in order to ensure an adequate quality of life for people with visual impairment and blindness, a good understanding of their needs is necessary. In this Master's thesis, we demonstrated the development of the concept and research of the quality of life through a review of domestic and foreign expert literature. The study, which included 50 participants aged between 19 and 84, gave us an insight into the state of the quality of life of people with visual impairment and blindness in Slovenia and examined the factors related to it. To assess the quality of life of people with visual impairment and blindness, we used questionnaires measuring quality of life and selected factors (symptoms of depression, level of loneliness, satisfaction with life, support of the family, independence in daily tasks, life-space). The results showed that the presence of vision loss lowers the quality of life of people with visual impairment and blindness, somewhat more prominently within certain parameters, but generally less pronounced compared to the findings of previous research. These also show significant correlations between increasing rates of vision loss and reduced quality of life

Institution culture and professional development of preschool teacher

    Get PDF
In recent decades, various researchers have dealt a lot with the field of organizational climate and culture in schools. Although the concepts of school culture and climate have come to the fore in recent decades, they appeared already in the first half of the 20th century. Some authors equate the concepts, while others clearly separate them. Some authors talk only about climate or only about culture, without even bothering to define the differences. In the master's thesis, we focused on organizational culture and professional development of preschool teacher. In the theoretical part, both concepts are presented, as well as the organizational climate and the differences between climate and culture. Special emphasis is focused on the institution culture and the institutional culture characteristics. The management influence on the institution culture formation and the professional development of nursery school practitioners are mentioned. In the empirical research, we wanted to determine to what extent and in what way the professional competence of the respondents is influenced by years of service and experience, which type of institutional culture prevails in nursery school according to the respondents, how preschool teachers and preschool teachers – assistant preschool teachers define the possibilities for their own professional development, and in what way the management influences the institution culture formation. Practitioners from different nursery schools with different years of service in nursery school were included in the research. Among other things, the research has shown that elements of traditionally oriented culture are still present in nursery schools, but nevertheless it is also the good community culture that largely characterizes the nursery school environment. At individual items, we have determined whether there were statistically significant differences between different groups of respondents according to their years of service. One of the findings is that, according to the majority of respondents with 19−30 years of service, various experiences have a great influence on professional competence, while respondents with 0−3 years of service in the majority believe that experience influences the professional competence of preschool teacher/preschool teacher − assistant preschool teacher. The results of the research represent a contribution in the professional field, as we note that most research is focused on the school field rather than the nursery school field
