Transformation of Terms Ḥārth in Quranic Translation: Comparing Colonial-Era and Contemporary Translations
Differences in translations across periods often lead to variations in meaning, making terminological transformation inevitable. This study aims to analyze in depth the transformation of the term Ḥārth in two versions of the Qur'an translation, namely during the colonial period and the present day. The methodology is a qualitative approach combining descriptive, comparative, and interpretive methods. The research data are drawn from all verses containing the element Ḥārth in the Tafsir Qur'an Karim by Mahmud Yunus, as well as the official version from the Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs. The results show that Ḥārth has a broad meaning, encompassing farming, land, and metaphorical uses. The identified transformation patterns include shifts from place to product, from product to place, from singular to plural, and from literal to metaphorical, influenced by socio-cultural context and reading styles over time. This study recommends that academics and translation institutions pay more attention to historical-linguistic aspects to maintain the relevance and accuracy of theological messages in changing times.Perbedaan dalam hasil terjemahan dari berbagai periode seringkali menimbulkan variasi arti, sehingga transformasi istilah menjadi suatu hal yang tidak dapat dihindari. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis secara mendalam transformasi istilah Ḥārth dalam dua versi terjemahan Al-Qur’an, yaitu pada masa kolonial dan masa kini. Metodologi yang digunakan adalah pendekatan kualitatif dengan kombinasi metode deskriptif, komparatif, dan interpretatif. Sumber data penelitian diambil dari seluruh ayat yang mengandung unsur Ḥārth dalam Tafsir Qur’an Karim karya Mahmud Yunus dan versi resmi dari Kementerian Agama RI. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Ḥārth memiliki makna yang luas, mencakup proses bercocok tanam, lahan, hingga makna metaforis. Pola transformasi yang teridentifikasi mencakup pergeseran dari tempat ke produk, produk ke tempat, singular ke plural, serta dari literal ke metaforis, dipengaruhi oleh konteks sosial budaya dan gaya baca dari waktu ke waktu. Penelitian ini merekomendasikan agar akademisi dan lembaga penerjemah lebih memperhatikan aspek historis-linguistik demi menjaga relevansi dan akurasi pesan teologis dalam perkembangan zaman
Belief or Disbelief? Unraveling the Meaning of the Use of Quranic Verses as Amulets in Indonesian Muslim Society
The practice of using Quranic verses as amulets among Indonesian Muslims indicates complex issues related to religious understanding and the concept of monotheism. This study aims to examine this phenomenon and its implications. Using qualitative methods, data were collected through a literature review and field observations, and then analyzed from an Islamic theological perspective, specifically the concept of monotheism and the views of Islamic scholars. The results indicate that this practice persists, influenced by local traditions and mystical beliefs, and fueled by limited understanding. While some view it as a spiritual endeavor, Islamic scholarship warns that believing Quranic verses have independent power can deviate from the creed. The study recommends strengthening the understanding of the creed through more effective Islamic da'wah and education.Praktik penggunaan ayat Al-Quran sebagai jimat di masyarakat Muslim Indonesia mengindikasikan adanya isu kompleks terkait pemahaman keagamaan dan konsep tauhid. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengkaji fenomena tersebut dan implikasinya. Menggunakan metode kualitatif, data dikumpulkan melalui studi literatur dan observasi lapangan, kemudian dianalisis dari perspektif teologi Islam, khususnya konsep tauhid dan pandangan ulama. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan praktik ini masih berlangsung, dipengaruhi tradisi lokal dan kepercayaan mistis, serta dipicu keterbatasan pemahaman. Sementara sebagian memandangnya sebagai ikhtiar spiritual, kajian keilmuan Islam melihat potensi penyimpangan akidah jika ayat Al-Quran diyakini memiliki kekuatan mandiri. Penelitian ini merekomendasikan penguatan pemahaman akidah dan pemurnian tauhid melalui pengembangan dakwah serta pendidikan keislaman yang lebih efektif sebagai rujukan
Scientific Exegesis of Surah An-Nur, Verse 40: Analyzing the Maritime Metaphor
This study examines the maritime metaphor in Surah An-Nur, Verse 40, through a comparative analysis of classical tafsīr and modern scientific exegesis. The objective is to analyze how traditional spiritual interpretations of this verse correspond with contemporary oceanographic discoveries. The research employs a qualitative descriptive-analytical method with content analysis, systematically comparing classical exegetical works (al-Ṭabarī, Ibn Abī Ḥātim, Muqātil bin Sulaymān, Yaḥyā bin Salām) with peer-reviewed marine science literature. The findings reveal that the verse operates effectively on two complementary levels: first, as a profound theological parable illustrating spiritual blindness according to classical commentators; and second, as an empirically accurate description corresponding to modern marine science discoveries, specifically, the exponential absorption of light spectra creating layered darkness in the aphotic zone (below 1,000 meters), and the phenomenon of internal waves traveling along density gradients. This dual coherence contributes to the discourse on I'jāz al-'Ilmī (Scientific Inimitability) by demonstrating how the Qur'anic description corresponds to oceanic phenomena that were historically unknowable to seventh-century observers. The study concludes that modern scientific interpretation enriches rather than replaces the classical spiritual meaning, establishing a hermeneutical bridge that maintains theological integrity while engaging contemporary scientific understanding.Penelitian ini mengkaji metafora maritim dalam Surah An-Nur, Ayat 40, melalui analisis komparatif tafsīr klasik dan tafsirilmiah modern. Tujuannya adalah untuk menganalisis bagaimana interpretasi spiritual tradisional dari ayat ini sesuai denganpenemuan oseanografi kontemporer. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif-analitis kualitatif dengan analisis konten,secara sistematis membandingkan karya eksegetis klasik (al-Ṭabarī, Ibn Abī Ḥātim, Muqātil bin Sulaymān, Yaḥyā bin Salām)dengan literatur ilmu kelautan yang ditinjau oleh rekan sejawat. Temuan ini mengungkapkan bahwa ayat ini beroperasi secaraefektif pada dua tingkat yang saling melengkapi, yaitu pertama, sebagai perumpamaan teologis yang mendalam yangmenggambarkan kebutaan rohani menurut komentator klasik; dan kedua, sebagai deskripsi yang akurat secara empiris yangsesuai dengan penemuan ilmu kelautan modern, khususnya, penyerapan eksponensial spektrum cahaya yang menciptakankegelapan berlapis di zona afotik (di bawah 1.000 meter), dan fenomena gelombang internal yang bergerak di sepanjanggradien kepadatan. Koherensi ganda ini berkontribusi pada wacana tentang I'jāz al-'Ilmī (Inimitasi Ilmiah) denganmenunjukkan bagaimana deskripsi Al-Qur'an sesuai dengan fenomena samudera yang secara historis tidak dapat diketahuioleh pengamat abad ketujuh. الظاهر والباطن في تفسير القرآن (دراسة مقارنة بين الاتجاهين الصوفي والشيعي)
The diversity of interpretations of the Qur'an has played a significant role in enriching Islamic thought throughout history. Among the methods that have attracted attention are Sufi allegorical (ishārī) and Shia esoteric (bāṭinī) interpretations, both of which emphasize the revelation of the text's inner meaning. However, ambiguity often arises regarding the methodological similarities or differences between the two. This study aims to examine the fundamental differences between these two approaches and their implications for understanding the Qur'an. It addresses whether Sufi and Shia interpretations share a common methodological framework for accessing the inner meaning or follow different paths. A comparative analytical methodology is employed, drawing on classical exegetical sources from both traditions. Examples are analyzed based on consistent criteria, including linguistic context, theoretical foundations, and doctrinal assumptions. The results reveal a fundamental difference; Sufi interpretation is rooted in spiritual contemplation and symbolism, while Shia interpretation is tied to Imami doctrine. Therefore, it is recommended that Islamic studies scholars refrain from generalizing about the forms of esoteric interpretation and conduct further studies to explore how these differences influence inter-school dialogue in the modern era.ساهم تعدد مناهج التفسير وتنوعها في إثراء الفكر الإسلامي، إذ لطالما كان القرآن الكريم محورًا رئيسيًا لتأمل العلماء والباحثين عبر التاريخ. ومن بين المناهج التي حظيت باهتمام واسع منهج التفسير الإشاري الصوفي والتفسير الباطني الشيعي، حيث يمثلان مدرستين فكريتين تركزان على معاني القرآن الباطنة. يهدف هذا البحث إلى تسليط الضوء على الفروق الأساسية بين هذين المنهجين وتأثيرهما في فهم النصوص القرآنية، من خلال طرح سؤال رئيسي: هل يوجد توافق بين التفسير الباطني الشيعي والتفسير الإشاري الصوفي في منهجيتهما لفهم المعاني الباطنة للقرآن الكريم، أم أن لكل منهما مسارًا مستقلًا يستند إلى مفاهيم مختلفة؟ اعتمد البحث على المنهج التحليلي المقارن، من خلال الرجوع إلى نصوص من كتب التفسير لدى الصوفية والشيعة، وتحليل نماذج تطبيقية محددة وفق معايير منهجية ثابتة تشمل دراسة السياق اللغوي والموضوعي، وتتبع الأصول النظرية التي يقوم عليها كل منهج، والمقارنة بين منطلقاتهما العقدية وأدواتهما التأويلية. كما تم الاستفادة من الدراسات السابقة المتعلقة بالموضوع للتحقق من اتساق النتائج وتعزيز موثوقيتها، مما يسهم في إزالة اللبس وتوضيح الصورة العلمية لكلا المنهجين. وتوصل البحث إلى أن هناك اختلافًا جوهريًا بين المنهجين؛ فالتفسير الإشاري الصوفي يقوم على التأمل الروحي والإشارات الباطنة المستندة إلى التجربة الروحية، بينما يركز التفسير الباطني الشيعي على التأويل المرتبط بالعقيدة الإمامية وتفسير النص ضمن أطر مذهبية مغلقة. كما تبين أن التفسير الباطني الشيعي يوظف آليات تأويلية تهدف إلى ترسيخ مبادئ الإمامة، في حين يتبنى التفسير الصوفي رؤية روحانية أكثر عمومية ومرونة في فهم النصوص
Cosmos as a Divine Text: Reconstruction of the Epistemology of Qur'anic Interpretation Based on Modern Astrophysics
This article discusses the cosmos as a divine text by reconstructing the epistemology of Qur'anic interpretation in light of modern astrophysics. This approach emphasizes the integration of revelation, empirical observation, and philosophical reflection in understanding the phenomena of the universe. By examining Qur'anic cosmological verses hermeneutically and linking them to contemporary astrophysical discoveries, such as stellar evolution, black holes, cosmic background radiation, and the large-scale structure of the universe. The method used is qualitative with a philosophical hermeneutic approach model, where the primary sources are cosmological verses such as (Q.S. Ali 'Imran: 190), (Q.S. Yasin: 40), (Q.S. al-Dzariyat: 47), (Q.S. al-Anbiya’: 30), (Q.S. al-Qamar: 49), (Q.S. al-Hadid: 4), to (Q.S. al-Furqan: 59). The secondary sources are journals, books, or other relevant research. After the data is collected, a comparative thematic content analysis is conducted using a triangulation model to ensure data validity, and conclusions are drawn. The study's results indicate that revelation and science complement each other in building a holistic, transdisciplinary, and relevant understanding of modern science. The proposed Integrative Cosmological Interpretation Model combines the bayani (textual), burhani (rational-empirical), and irfani (spiritual-intuitive) approaches, so that Qur'anic interpretation is not only descriptive, but also prescriptive, philosophical, and ethical. The epistemic and philosophical implications of this research open new perspectives in Qur'anic studies, strengthen the dialogue between science and revelation, and emphasize the cosmos as a medium for human intellectual and spiritual reflection.
Dekontruksi Narasi Utsmani dalam Studi Al-Qur'an: Analisis Komparatif Tafsir At-Thabari dan Kritik John Wansbrough
This study examines the deconstruction of the Uthmani Mushaf narrative in Qur’anic studies through a comparative analysis of At-Thabari’s classical interpretation of Q.S. Al-Baqarah (2):2 and John Wansbrough’s historical-critical approach. The aim of this research is to investigate how the concepts of revelation, textual authority, and the narrative of salvation are constructed within normative Islamic exegesis and how they are challenged by modern historical criticism. This research employs a qualitative, library-based method with clearly defined stages, including the collection of primary and secondary sources, content analysis of Jamiʿ Al-Bayan, a critical examination of Qur’anic Studies and The Sectarian Milieu, and an epistemological comparison of the two interpretive frameworks. The findings indicate that At-Thabari understands revelation as a certain and transcendent reality that underpins spiritual transformation and salvation for the God-conscious, whereas Wansbrough interprets the certainty of revelation as an ideological construct shaped by the dynamics of the early Muslim community. The significance of this study lies in demonstrating that the Uthmani Mushaf functions not merely as a product of codification or a symbol of political authority, but also as a mechanism for stabilizing meaning that enabled the emergence of a normative exegetical tradition in early Islam, while simultaneously opening a critical dialogue between theological faith and modern academic approaches in Qur’anic studies.Penelitian ini membahas dekonstruksi narasi Mushaf Utsmani dalam studi Al-Qur’an melalui analisis komparatif antara tafsir klasik At-Thabari atas Q.S. Al-Baqarah ayat 2 dan kritik historis John Wansbrough. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengkaji bagaimana konsep wahyu, otoritas teks, dan narasi keselamatan dibangun dalam tafsir normatif Islam serta ditantang oleh pendekatan historis kritis modern. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif berbasis studi kepustakaan dengan tahapan metodologis yang meliputi: pengumpulan sumber primer dan sekunder, analisis isi tafsir Jami‘ Al-Bayan, pembacaan kritis karya Qur’anic Studies dan The Sectarian Milieu, serta perbandingan epistemologis antara kedua kerangka pemikiran tersebut. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa At-Thabari memaknai wahyu sebagai realitas transenden yang pasti dan menjadi dasar transformasi spiritual serta keselamatan bagi orang bertakwa, sedangkan Wansbrough menafsirkan kepastian wahyu sebagai konstruksi ideologis yang lahir dari dinamika komunitas Muslim awal. Dampak kajian ini adalah memperlihatkan bahwa Mushaf Utsmani tidak hanya berfungsi sebagai hasil kodifikasi atau simbol kekuasaan, tetapi juga sebagai mekanisme stabilisasi makna yang memungkinkan lahirnya tradisi tafsir normatif dalam Islam awal, sekaligus membuka ruang dialog kritis antara iman teologis dan pendekatan akademik modern dalam studi Al-Qur’an
Qur’anic Foundations of Religious Moderation: A Case Study of Students at UIN Raden Mas Said Surakarta
Recent national surveys in Indonesia, including reports from the Ministry of Religious Affairs and independent research institutions, indicate a decline in religious tolerance among students, raising concerns about the effectiveness of religious education in fostering religious moderation. This study examines the Qur’anic foundations of religious moderation by mapping students’ understanding of selected Qur’anic verses on tolerance and analyzing their relationship with religious moderation among students at UIN Raden Mas Said Surakarta. In this study, mapping refers to an empirical assessment of students’ perceptions and comprehension of tolerance-related Qur’anic verses and their association with moderating religious attitudes. Employing a quantitative survey design, data were collected from 352 students across five faculties using stratified systematic sampling. Correlation and regression analyses were applied to examine the relationship between the variables. The findings reveal a positive and statistically significant relationship between students’ understanding of Qur’anic tolerance verses and religious moderation (r = 0.505, p < 0.01), indicating a moderate strength of association. Regression analysis further confirms the model's robustness. The results suggest that stronger comprehension of Qur’anic principles of tolerance is associated with higher levels of religious moderation, shaped by curricular content, lecturers’ pedagogical approaches, and students’ social environments. These findings provide empirical support for strengthening Qur’an-based educational policies and instructional strategies to promote religious moderation within State Islamic Higher Education Institutions (PTKIN).Survei nasional terkini di Indonesia, termasuk laporan Kementerian Agama dan sejumlah lembaga riset independen, menunjukkan kecenderungan menurunnya toleransi beragama di kalangan mahasiswa. Kondisi ini menimbulkan kekhawatiran terhadap efektivitas pendidikan keagamaan dalam menumbuhkan moderasi beragama. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji fondasi Qur’ani moderasi beragama dengan memetakan pemahaman mahasiswa terhadap ayat-ayat Al-Qur’an tentang toleransi serta menganalisis hubungannya dengan sikap moderasi beragama pada mahasiswa UIN Raden Mas Said Surakarta. Pemetaan dalam penelitian ini dimaknai sebagai penilaian empiris terhadap persepsi dan tingkat pemahaman mahasiswa atas ayat-ayat toleransi dalam Al-Qur’an serta keterkaitannya dengan sikap keberagamaan yang moderat. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan desain survei yang melibatkan 352 mahasiswa dari lima fakultas, yang dipilih melalui teknik stratified systematic sampling. Data dianalisis menggunakan teknik korelasi dan regresi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya hubungan positif dan signifikan secara statistik antara pemahaman terhadap ayat-ayat toleransi dalam Al-Qur’an dan moderasi beragama (r = 0,505; p < 0,01), dengan kekuatan hubungan pada tingkat sedang. Analisis regresi selanjutnya menegaskan signifikansi model yang digunakan. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa semakin baik pemahaman terhadap prinsip-prinsip toleransi dalam Al-Qur’an, semakin tinggi tingkat moderasi beragama mahasiswa. Penelitian ini memberikan dasar empiris bagi penguatan kebijakan dan strategi pembelajaran berbasis Al-Qur’an dalam upaya memperkuat moderasi beragama di Perguruan Tinggi Keagamaan Islam Negeri (PTKIN)
The Coherence of Surah Nuh in Perspective of Semitic Rhetorical Analysis
القرآن هو وحدة متينة، كهيكل بناء قوي لا يمكن فصله، ومترابط بشكل وثيق بين الآيات وبين السور فيه. ولكنّ يرى ريتشارد بيل خلاف ذلك، على سبيل المثال يعتقد أن سورة نوح ليست بشكل منهجي وهناك عدة أخطاء وأغلاط في وضع الآيات، خاصّة في الآية الخامسة فهي ليست في وحدة واحدة. فيهدف هذا البحث إلى كشف بنية سورة نوح بتطبيق أساس التحليلي البلاغي السامي على تلك السورة مطابقة بالبنية المتوازية أو المحورية أو المعكوسة. وذلك باستخدام الأسلوب التحليلي لمعالجة البيانات والإجابة على مشكلة البحث، مع المنهج التحليل البلاغي السامي لإيجاد البنية النصية من سورة نوح والمناسبة لإيجاد الارتباط بين الآيات فيها. ونتائج هذا البحث هي على حسب التحليلي البلاغي السامي تنكشف بنية سورة نوح حيث أنها مقطع واحد يحتوي على 3 أجزاء و7 أقسام وتشكل بنية محورية متوازية (أ ب /ₓ/ أ′ ب′). وكل قسم وجزء له علاقة بالأقسام والأجزاء الأخرى التي تدل على حسن المناسبة، حتى لم يكن هناك ترتيب آيات غير مرتبط بين الآيات السابقة والآيات اللاحقة، كما في الآيات 5-7 الذي يشرح دعوة نوح المكثفة ورفض قومه لدعوته. وهذا الاكتشاف يفنّد رأي رتشارد بيل، لأن كل آية في سورة نوح قادرة على أن تكون متماثلة مع آية أخرى من مستوي الأدنى إلى مستوى أعلى. وخلاصة هذا البحث أن سورة نوح منظمة بشكل منهجي ومرتبة بين آياتها.The Qur'an is a unity, like a solid, inseparable building structure, interconnected from verse to verse and from sura to surah. However, Richard Bell has a different view; for example, according to him, Surah Nuh is not systematic, and there are several errors in the placement of the verses, especially in the fifth verse, not in one unity. Therefore, this research aims to reveal the structure of Surah Nuh by applying Semitic Rhetorical Analysis to Surah Nuh based on the parallel, concentric, or mirror-symmetrical composition structure. This study uses an analytical method to process the data and answer the research problem, using the sublime semitic rhetorical analysis approach to find the textual structure of Surat Nuh and the coherence between the verses. The results of this research show that According to Semitic rhetorical analysis, the structure of Surat Nuh is revealed as one Passage, which contains three parts and seven pieces forming a parallel concentric construction (A B /ₓ/ A′ B′).Every piece and part has a relationship with other pieces and parts that indicate the goodness of the coherence, so there was no connection between the previous verses and the subsequent verses, as in verses 5-7, which explains Dakwah Nuh’s intense and his rejection of his da’wah. This discovery refutes Richard Bell's opinion because every verse in Surat Nuh can be identical to another verse from the lowest level to the highest level. This research concludes that Surat Nuh is systematically organized and arranged among its verses
