Quasi-Hopf symmetries from twisted noncommutative gauge theories and non-associative spacetime algebra

    Get PDF
In previous work, starting from the Moyal plane, we formulated interacting theories of matter and gauge fields with only the former fields twisted. In this approach, gauge theories, including the standard model, can be formulated without new gauge degrees of freedom. We show their underlying symmetry algebra to be Poincaré quasi-Hopf. The associated spacetime algebra is hence non-associative

Exact results for the star lattice chiral spin liquid

    Get PDF
We examine the star lattice Kitaev model whose ground state is a a chiral spin liquid. We fermionize the model such that the fermionic vacua are toric code states on an effective Kagome lattice. This implies that the Abelian phase of the system is inherited from the fermionic vacua and that time reversal symmetry is spontaneously broken at the level of the vacuum. In terms of these fermions we derive the Bloch-matrix Hamiltonians for the vortex free sector and its time reversed counterpart and illuminate the relationships between the sectors. The phase diagram for the model is shown to be a sphere in the space of coupling parameters around the triangles of the lattices. The abelian phase lies inside the sphere and the critical boundary between topologically distinct Abelian and non-Abelian phases lies on the surface. Outside the sphere the system is generically gapped except in the planes where the coupling parameters are zero. These cases correspond to bipartite lattice structures and the dispersion relations are similar to that of the original Kitaev honeycomb model. In a further analysis we demonstrate the three-fold non-Abelian groundstate degeneracy on a torus by explicit calculation

Universal holographic chiral dynamics in an external magnetic field

    Get PDF
In this work we further extend the investigation of holographic gauge theories in external magnetic fields, continuing earlier work. We study the phenomenon of magnetic catalysis of mass generation in 1+3 and 1+2 dimensions, using D3/D7– and D3/D5–brane systems, respectively. We obtain the low energy effective actions of the corresponding pseudo Goldstone bosons and study their dispersion relations. The D3/D7 system exhibits the usual Gell-Mann–Oakes–Renner (GMOR) relation and a relativistic dispersion relation, while the D3/D5 system exhibits a quadratic non-relativistic dispersion relation and a modified linear GMOR relation. The low energy effective action of the D3/D5 system is related to that describing magnon excitations in a ferromagnet. We also study properties of general Dp/Dq systems in an external magnetic field and verify the universality of the magnetic catalysis of dynamical symmetry breaking

Chiral fermions and torsion in the early Universe

    Get PDF
Torsion arising from fermionic matter in the Einstein-Cartan formulation of general relativity is considered in the context of Robertson-Walker geometries and the early Universe. An ambiguity in the way torsion arising from hot fermionic matter in chiral models should be implemented is highlighted and discussed. In one interpretation, the non-zero torsion present in chiral models gives a negative contribution to the energy density which ameliorates the Big Bang singularity or even, in extreme cases, eliminates it completely giving bounce solutions for early Universe cosmology

Simulation of a scalar field on a fuzzy sphere

    Get PDF
The φ^4 real scalar field theory on a fuzzy sphere is studied numerically. We refine the phase diagram for this model where three distinct phases are known to exist: a uniformly ordered phase, a disordered phase, and a non-uniform ordered phase where the spatial SO(3) symmetry of the round sphere is spontaneously broken and which has no classical equivalent. The three coexistence lines between these phases, which meet at a triple point, are carefully located with particular attention paid to the one between the two ordered phases and the triple point itself. In the neighbourhood of the triple point all phase boundaries are well approximated by straight lines which, surprisingly, have the same scaling. We argue that unless an additional term is added to enhance the effect of the kinetic term the infinite matrix limit of this model will not correspond to a real scalar field on the commutative sphere or plane

Matrix models, gauge theory and emergent geometry

We present, theoretical predictions and Monte Carlo simulations, for a simple three matrix model that exhibits an exotic phase transition. The nature of the transition is very different if approached from the high or low temperature side. The high temperature phase is described by three self interacting random matrices with no background spacetime geometry. As the system cools there is a phase transition in which a classical two-sphere condenses to form the background geometry. The transition has an entropy jump or latent heat, yet the specific heat diverges as the transition is approached from low temperatures. We find no divergence or evidence of critical fluctuations when the transition is approached from the high temperature phase. At sufficiently low temperatures the system is described by small fluctuations, on a background classical two-sphere, of a U(1) gauge field coupled to a massive scalar field. The critical temperature is pushed upwards as the scalar field mass is increased. Once the geometrical phase is well established the specific heat takes the value 1 with the gauge and scalar fields each contributing 1/2

On the thermodynamic limit of the 6-vertex model

    Get PDF
We give a rigorous treatment to the thermodynamic limit of the 6-vertex model. We prove that the unique solution of the Bethe-Ansatz equation exists and the distribution of the roots converges to a continuum measure. We solve this problem for 0 < ∆ < 1 using convexity arguments and for large negative ∆ using the Fixed Point Theory of appropriately defined contracting operator

We present an implementation of the algorithm for computing Gröbner bases for operads due to the first author and A. Khoroshkin. We discuss the actual algorithms, the choices made for the implementation platform and the data representation, and strengths and weaknesses of our approach

Dimensional Reduction and Vacuum Structure of Quiver Gauge Theory

    Get PDF
We describe the structure of the vacuum states of quiver gauge theories obtained via dimensional reduction over homogeneous spaces, in the explicit example of SU(3)-equivariant dimensional reduction of Yang-Mills-Dirac theory on manifolds of the form M × CP 2 . We pay particular attention to the role of topology of background gauge fields on the internal coset spaces, in this case U(1) magnetic monopoles and SU(2) instantons on CP 2 . The reduction of Yang-Mills theory induces a quiver gauge theory involving coupled Yang-Mills-Higgs systems on M with a Higgs potential leading to dynamical symmetry breaking. The criterion for a ground state of the Higgs potential can be written as the vanishing of a non-abelian Yang-Mills flux on the quiver diagram, regarded as a lattice with group elements attached to the links. The reduction of SU(3)-symmetric fermions yields Dirac fermions on M transforming under the low-energy gauge group with Yukawa couplings. The fermionic zero modes on CP 2 yield exactly massless chiral fermions on M , though there is a unique choice of spin c structure on CP 2 for which some of the zero modes can acquire masses through Yukawa interactions. We work out the spontaneous symmetry breaking patterns and determine the complete physical particle spectrum in a number of explicit examples, some of which possess quantum number assignments qualitatively analogous to the manner in which vector bosons, quarks and leptons acquire masses in the standard model
