    No full text
Background: Tooth avulsion is the detachment of a tooth from its socket due to mechanical trauma. It was reported that a 26-year-old male patient was referred from the RSND Emergency Department to the dental clinic with complaints of loose front teeth of the upper jaw due to a traffic accident. From the intraoral examination, tooth 11 was partially detached from its socket, tooth 12 had an Ellis class II fracture, and a torn wound on the labial mucosa of the lower lip. Treatment of choice in this case is replantation and fixation of avulsed teeth, which aim to restore the physiological function of the teeth.Method: Treatments include extraoral root canal treatment and replantation and fixation of the arch bar. Result: Clinical and radiographic examinations during post-treatment control showed periodontal tissue healing and bone formation. Conclusion: It was concluded that the success rate of tooth replantation, in this case, was good, and using the right arch bar provided stability to the avulsed tooth, thereby accelerating the healing of the periodontal ligament

Background: Post-core restoration is one restoration after endodontic treatment by optimizing the root canal as a retention. Fracture of the root is the most common failure due to the post being less elastic in holding the chewing load, especially the metal post. FRC post-core indicates to prevent tooth fracture. In addition, the FRC post-core minimizes the reduction of dentine tissue in the root canals, called a minimally invasive dentistry approach. This study examined the effect of the number of fibres on the elastic moduli of fabricated FRC posts using a three-bending point test to determine the elasticity of fabricated FRC posts. Method: The study was experimental laboratory research with the post-only control group design using polyethene fibre (Kerr) and flowable composite resin (Kerr), prefabricated post-core (Kerr). The study was divided into four groups, namely prefabricated, fabricated with a volume of 1 fibre, 2 fibres, and 3 fibres, where each group consisted of 6 samples. Result: There was no significant difference in the magnitude of the force on the specimen (p>0.05). The force among the groups was the same, the alteration (deflection) of the specimens among the groups was significantly different (

Background : In contrast to the posterior teeth, which are still in occlusion, No incisal contact in the anterior part of the maxilla and mandibula between the vertical dimension is referred to as anterior open. Skeletal irregularity during the expansion of the intermaxillary gap and poor habits can both contribute to openbite. Tongue thrusting is one of the undesirable practices that might result in anterior openbite. Objective : This treatment's objective is to break negative habits by employing myofunctional therapy to develop a healthy swallowing pattern and train the posture of the tongue and lips while at rest. Case Report : A 19-year-old woman who protruded her tongue visited a dental office with the main complaint of an unattractive anterior open bite. She had an open bite of 12 12 21 22 dan 31 32 41 42, a Class II Division I subdivision Angle, a Class II skeletal relationship (protruding maxilla, retrusive mandibula, and bidental protrusive), an overjet of 6.87 mm, an overbite of 0.43 mm, and a Class II skeletal relationship. Case Management : myofunctional therapy combined with straightwire orthodontic treatment. Result : The anterior open bite is rectified, the overjet is reduced to 2,2 mm, and the overbite is increased to 2 mm after 16 months of therapy. The patient's poor swallowing pattern has improved, and their terrible tongue-trusting behavior has decreased. Conclusion : Straightwire method and myofunctional therapy are both effective treatments for anterior openbite repair brought on by tongue thrusting

Background: Candida albicans is main cause of fungal infections in denture users. Prevention is needed by soaking dentures using a disinfectant. Chitosan is an alternative disinfectant emulsion because it is biodegradable, biocompatible, and does not cause discoloration. This research objective is to determine the effect of chitosan emulsion on the number of C.albicans on base plate thermoplastic nylon. Method: This is a true experimental study using post-test only design by using 25 base plates divided into 5 groups namely treatment I, treatment II, treatment III, positive and negative control. Plate was incubated in C.albicans suspension for 24 hours in McFarland and 10-3 series dilution. The plates was rinsed with aquadest, then soaked with 0.3% chitosan emulsion, 0.8% chitosan emulsion, 2% chitosan emulsion, 0.2% chlorhexidine gluconate, and aquadest for 15 minutes. The attached C.albicans colony in the plate was released to the SDB by using centrifuge device, then proliferated on the SDA and incubated (24 hours). The results of the C.albicans colony were counted visually by using a colony counter. The number of Candida albicans colonies data were analyzed using One-Way ANOVA and then Post Hoc Tukey HSD test. Result: The results showed that there were significant mean differences between each group (

Background: Oral potentially malignant disorder (OPMD) is a lesion with a high potential to turn into oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). The discovery of OPMD lesions precedes most cases of OSCC. Sensitive and specific biomarkers can help in the early detection of high-risk patients, one of which is CD8+, part of the cytotoxic T lymphocytes, which have a role in eliminating cancer cells. Several studies use infiltration density and CD8+ T cells' activity as biomarkers in malignancy. This study aims to observe the expression of CD8+ in OPMD lesions and correlate with risk factors Method: Twelve paraffin blocks samples consist of OPMD lesions. One oral lichen planus (OLP) as the positive control. Samples were stained using HE to observe the degree of dysplasia and immunohistochemistry to observe the expression of CD8+ T cells. Observation of results using a microscope with 100x magnification to select the field of view and 400x magnification to count the number of positive CD8+ T cells with a cut-off point of 500 cells from a total of 5 fields of view and determined by weak intensity

Median rhomboid glossitis as a sign of undiagnosed diabetes mellitus - a case report

    Get PDF
Background: Median Rhomboid Glossitis (MRG) is included in the group of nodular-plaque-like candidiasis, a subtype of chronic hyperplastic candidiasis. A lot of literature suggests that MRG is a manifestation of Diabetes Mellitus (DM), but the association between DM and MRG is unclear until now. This article reports an MRG found in an undiagnosed diabetes mellitus patient. Case: In October 2019, A 71-year-old man came to RSGM Universitas Jember to fix his loose denture. In the oral examination, we found a well-bordering, atrophic oval area surrounded by thick- soft white plaque. In his leg, we found itchy papule, ulcer, and crust multiple lesions. The microscopic examination of the white plaque swab showed that the spore and hyphae were found to fill all fields of view. The direct sugar blood level test showed that the sugar blood level was 390 mg/dL. We diagnosed the patient as having an MRG associated with suspected DM. Case Management: The patient was given miconazole oral gel and recommended to use it after cleaning the tongue three times a day. For diabetes management, the patient was referred to the Unit Medical Center University of Jember. The patient was diagnosed with diabetes mellitus and given oral-antidiabetics. After two weeks, the atrophic area had improved, and the white plaque had disappeared. Conclusion: General practitioners must be aware if they find the MRG in their patients caused a probability of underlying undiagnosed systemic disease, particularly diabetes mellitus on them

    Get PDF
Background: Tooth extraction causes injury to the alveolar bone and oral mucosa which is followed by the body ’s natural response through wound healing. One of the important parameters and indicators of wound healing is collagen density. Collagen is synthesised by fibroblasts in the proliferative phase, which was formed from day 3 and reached its peak on day 7. Robusta coffee beans have active compounds in the form of anti-inflammatory and antioxidants that are effective in accelerating wound healing. Objective: To determine the effectiveness of robusta coffee bean extract gel (Coffea canephora) at concentrations of 12,5%, 25%, and 50% in increasing the thickness of collagen fibres in socket wound healing after tooth extraction in Wistar rats. Method: This type of research is laboratory experimental. The samples used were 40 male Wistar rats divided into 5 groups: negative control, positive control, 12.5% robusta coffee bean extract gel treatment, 25% robusta coffee bean extract gel treatment, and 50% robusta coffee bean extract gel treatment. The sample group was decapitated on the 3rd and 7th day after tooth extraction. Socket tissues were taken to make histological preparations stained with trichrome mallory and then measured using Adobe Photoshop CS 6.0 software. Results: The average thickness of collagen fibres in the Robusta coffee bean extract gel treatment group was higher than that in the control group (

    No full text
Background: The polishing procedure was an important step in composite resin restoration as it reduces restoration surface roughness. Smooth and well-polished restoration surfaces can increase microhardness and minimize discoloration on the tooth surface. The study aims to examine the differences of one-step polishing systems on surface roughness, microhardness, and color stability of bulk-fill composite resin. Method: The samples were bulk-fill composite resin moulded with 4 mm of diameter and thickness (n=30) for microhardness (n=15) and surface roughness (n=15) test and moulded with 6 mm of diameter and 4 mm of thickness for color stability (n=15) test. The samples were divided into three groups consisting of 5 samples for each variable and were polished using PoGo, OptraPol, and OneGloss. Color stability test samples were immersed in tea solution for 7 days. Color stability measurement was done by comparing the results of color measurements using a spectrophotometer before and after immersion. Microhardness was tested using Vickers Microhardness Tester, while surface roughness was tested using the Stylus Profilometer Fowler Surfcorder SE1700. Result: The data analysis showed that PoGo produced the smoothest surface roughness significantly (p=0.006), the highest microhardness significantly (p=0.002), and the lowest color change significantly (p = 0.027) Conclusion: PoGo produced lowest surface roughness and color change, and highest microhardness compare with OptraPol and OneGloss
