Beyond Capacity: Exakte Phantasie and the Reconfiguration of Educational Normativity

No full text
This article argues for rethinking education in the Anthropocene as a site for reconfiguring subjectivity, rather than a reactive response to crisis. Framing the climate crisis as an aesthetic and phenomenological challenge, following Scott Hamilton and Dipesh Chakrabarty, it explores how ontological insecurity undermines the imagination of alternative futures. Drawing on Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak’s concept of planetarity, the article proposes an ethical and epistemological shift beyond universalizing frameworks, foregrounding alterity and contingency as central to educational thought. The argument develops through Theodor W. Adorno’s negative dialectics and his notion of education after Auschwitz, offering a model of negative normativity grounded in critical reflection on historical rupture and epistemic limits. Central to this is Adorno’s concept of exakte Phantasie, reimagined here as a pedagogical practice of receptive and speculative imagination. As a form of ars inveniendi, it fosters critical hope and imaginative agency within conditions of ecological and ontological uncertainty. Adorno’s critical and material reconceptualization of imagination, I argue, offers a new – performative – interpretation of aesthetic education, which is attuned to address contemporary socioeconomical and ecological challenges.

The Senses of the World. Art Confronting Data

No full text
The current era is characterized by the production of vast amounts of data across all sectors of society. This is made possible by ubiquitous technologies that can collect data from every human and non-human entity on the planet, as well as any environmental phenomena. Artistic practice offers a suitable platform for the endeavour to isolate specific expressive and signifying features from this indistinct mass of data. This paper focuses on a relatively overlooked field of research, where technology interacts with abstract data to extract what I propose to define as their “aesthetic sense”. Such an expression addresses the peculiar dynamics enabling art to move beyond the purely informative function of data, towards a different goal – designing experiences that turn the audience into perceptive participants, engaged in the otherwise imperceptible events and relations that are recorded and communicated by data. Technologies thus become media of polyphonic expression, able to give voice to other ways of feeling and being in the world. Emerging through computation is a sort of feeling that permeates the entire fabric of reality, of which any entity in the universe can become the protagonist. As a result, art stands out as a privileged gateway to a particular experience of reality. This kind of experience will be theoretically analysed in the present essay starting from the philosophy of Alfred North Whitehead, specifically from his notion of “feeling”.The current era is characterized by the production of vast amounts of data across all sectors of society. El Decreto penal en el caso “Cuatrecasas-Martínez”. Guía de perplejos

No full text
The criminal decree in the ‘Cuatrecasas-Martínez’ case. A guide for the perplexed This article analyzes the canonical penal decree in the "Cuatrecasas-Martínez" case (known in the media as the "caso Gaztelueta "). The author posits that the procedure in question did not constitute a legitimate criminal trial, but rather an ad hoc disciplinary process. The study underscores several notable irregularities, including the extensive interpretation of Canon 1398 §2 and the imposition of a sanction that contravenes the principles of criminal legality and non-retroactivity. The article poses a question regarding the extent to which the authority of the papal institution can supersede fundamental legal principles and human rights. The research also identifies concerns regarding the management of evidence and an apparent reliance on the conclusions of secular courts. In conclusion, the decree appears to be a response to external pressures and media impact rather than a process that adheres to due process guarantees. SUMARIO: 1. Introducción - 2. Current profiles of the principle “Prima sedes a nemine iudicatur” The origin and historical transmission of the principle Prima sedes a nemine iudicatur are well known to the science of canon law. But it is necessary to deepen the constitutional content of this principle, as it does not justify any way of exercising primacy. The content and purpose of the power of the Roman Pontiff, in the light of contemporary Theology and Canon law, explain the scope and limits in the application of the Prima sedes a nemine iudicatur. Emergencies can affect everybody in a given territory, but vulnerable groups are exposed to greater risks than the rest of the population. This contribution looks at the UN perspective concerning a specific vulnerable category, that is, religious minorities, in states of emergencies, by focusing on the Emergency Special Sessions of the General Assembly and on the Human Rights Council’s Special Procedures.

Religious Minorities in Ukraine Amidst Russia\u27s Invasion: Security, Legal, and Institutional Challenges

No full text
Russia’s full-scale invasion has posed significant challenges to religious freedom in Ukraine. Nearly 700 religious sites have been destroyed by ongoing Russian airstrikes and shelling targeting civilians across Ukraine. At the same time, Russia continues to suppress religious minorities and terrorize civilians in occupied Ukrainian regions, subjecting believers to persecution, arrests, tortures, and executions. The occupation authorities enforce Russification and the Russian World ideology, promoting the Russian Orthodox Church while suppressing other faiths. The Kremlin has weaponized religion as an instrument of ideological control, transforming Russian religious centers into mouthpieces of propaganda and channels of influence. In response, Ukraine has sought to limit Russian interference in religious affairs, leading to legislative initiatives that have sparked international debate. The country faces challenges in balancing national security with religious freedom, concerning the influence of Russian religious centers and policies on military conscription. The lack of clear provisions for conscientious objection has resulted in the legal persecution of believers from minority faiths. Additionally, mass migration and conscription disrupted religious communities, causing colossal displacement and leadership crises. This paper examines the intersection of war, religious policy, and human rights, analyzing how Ukraine navigates threats to its sovereignty while upholding its commitment to religious freedom. &nbsp

The Armenian lexical layer in Romani: Riconsiderations, hypotheses and a new loanword (xem ⟭ge of the sieve\u27)

No full text
Armenian loanwords represent a historically significant part of Early Romani lexicon. The number of loanwords that can be tracedback to this exogenous layer consists of about 50 lexemes. The phonetic shape shown by the Armenian loanwords in Romani implies that they have been acquired before the 11th century in a dialectal area that had not undergone the so-called 2nd Armenian consonant shift. The paper discusses some general issues regarding the Armenian layer in Romani and proposes some new observations about the phonological integration of Arm. ǝ and the loanwords endanis ⟺mliy\u27 and patragi ⟪ster, feast\u27. Finally, an Armenian origin is proposed for the Romani word xem ⟭ge of the sieve\u27

THE DEEP-SEA HATCHETFISH ARGYROPELECUS (STERNOPTYCHIDAE) IN THE EOCENE OF IRAN: DESCRIPTION AND PHYLOGENETIC RELATIONSHIPS OF TWO NEW SPECIES FROM THE PABDEH FORMATION

No full text
Two new deep-sea hatchetfish species, †Argyropelecus iranicus n. sp. and †Argyropelecus zagrosensis n. sp., are described in detail herein based on fossil material from the Eocene (Bartonian) deposits of the Pabdeh Formation, Zagros Basin, Iran. A detailed investigation of the skeletal morphology of these new species was made possible through elemental distribution maps obtained using micro-XRF imaging technique of the fossil material. These new species are the oldest known representatives of the genus Argyropelecus. A phylogenetic analysis that includes all the extant species of the genus Argyropelecus suggests that †Argyropelecus iranicus n. sp. and †Argyropelecus zagrosensis n. sp. pertain to the ‘A. lychnus species complex’ and the ‘A. affinis species complex’, respectively. The morphospace analysis confirmed the presence of two distinct morphotypes within the genus Argyropelecus. Potential correlations between morphospace occupation and the ecological setting and lifestyle of this bizarre group of deep-sea fishes are also discussed. The presence of two species of the genus Argyropelecus in the Eocene Pabdeh Formation extends the temporal and biogeographical range of these deep-sea fishes, providing additional information for our understanding of the evolutionary and biogeographical history of the deep-sea hatchetfishes
