JUMPING FROM TURTLES TO WHALES: A PLIOCENE FOSSIL RECORD DEPICTS AN ANCIENT DISPERSAL OF CHELONIBIA ON MYSTICETES
The barnacles included in the superfamily Coronuloidea are epizoic symbionts of various marine vertebrates (including cetaceans, sirenians, and sea turtles) and other crustaceans (crabs and horseshoe crabs). Among Coronuloidea, the so-called turtle barnacles (Chelonibiidae) are known from Paleogene times, whereas the whale barnacles (Coronulidae) likely appeared in the late Pliocene (Piacenzian). Although a derivation from the turtle barnacles (and especially from the genus Chelonibia) has been proposed, the evolutionary origin of Coronulidae remains to date obscure. In this work we reappraise a fossil record from upper Pliocene (Piacenzian) marine deposits at Casenuove (Empoli municipality, Tuscany, Italy) comprising various shells of Chelonibia testudinaria associated to a partial skeleton of a balaenid mysticete. Based on taphonomic and morpho-functional considerations, we discuss the hypothesis that the barnacles were hosted on the baleen whale, possibly on its callosities, which could have represented an analogous of the horny carapace of marine turtles. This record strongly suggests that the baleen whales can be added to the list of the possible hosts of the barnacles of the genus Chelonibia, thus hinting that the whale barnacles may have evolved from an ancient phase of dispersal of Chelonibia (or a similar ancestor) on mysticete cetaceans

Hölderlin: ein romantischer oder ein romantisierter Dichter? Fragment, Umnachtung, ‘obscuritas’, Revolution
This article aims to show how and why a poet who is not classified as a Romantic in literary historical terms, but as one who stands between Classicism and Romanticism and who himself spoke out against Romanticism, was romanticised or became a Romantic in the course of the 20th century. After an introduction to the state of research on Hölderlin and Romanticism and the poet’s relationships with the Romantics of his time, the essay concentrates on Hölderlin’s reception as a Romantic and identifies the main elements that led to the Romantic mythicisation of the poet as: the fragmentary nature of his work, the poet’s identification with his tragic, insane character, obscuritas and the revolution. The second part of the article emphasises Hölderlin’s constant search for ‘measure’, an ever-present feature of his work, with the aim of showing that the figure of the tragic Romantic poet, which his reception has emphasised by focusing on Romantic potential in his writing, is to be distinguished from the poet Hölderlin and his work
Faszination, Irritation und ästhetischer Eigensinn. Zu einer Geschichte der Interpretationen von Hölderlins «Hälfte des Lebens»
Since its first printing, Hölderlin’s probably most famous poem Hälfte des Lebens has challenged its recipients. The history of interpretation and the interpretative offers concerning the title and the blank space between the two stanzas not only offer different concepts of meaning, but also sketch a changed understanding of Hölderlin’s authorship, showing that Hölderlin’s text still forces us to think about what constitutes modern poetry
Multiple Greek Citizenships in the imperial age. Aspects of communication between speaker and audience in Dio Chrysostom
This paper discusses the question of multiple Greek citizenships in the imperial age by taking, as a case study, selected passages from the Bithynian orations of Dio Chrysostom. These passages shed light on the public and institutional settings and contexts in which acquired citizenships, far from being perceived simply as honorific titles, caused difficulties and set limits and challenges for their holders: the case of Dio and his sophisticated attempts to “juggle” before the assemblies and councils of Bithynian cities, (often rival cities), is a clear example of this.
A novel is like an axe that penetrates the chest and tears it open. Inter-view with Luca Galassi
The article features an interview with Luca Galassi, journalist and writer, and is part of a research project dedicated to the symbolic and social impact of the 1993 Mafia attacks against Italy\u27s artistic heritage. In the contribution, the focus shifts from criminal responsibility to the damage inflicted on art and collective memory. In particular, the article reconstructs the birth of the video ‘The Cure’, which documents the restoration of the painting I Giocatori di Carte by Bartolomeo Manfredi, severely damaged in the 1993 Via dei Georgofili massacre. Finally, the article highlights the value of artistic recovery as a resilience to mafia violence and an act of civil commitment
ORDOVICIAN (DARRIWILIAN–KATIAN) BRACHIOPODS FROM THE SOUTHEASTERN MARGIN OF AVALONIA (CONDROZ INLIER, BELGIUM)
A low-diversity, relatively well-preserved brachiopod fauna is documented in detail for the first time from the Sandbian–Katian (Upper Ordovician) siliciclastic rocks of the Oxhe Inlier (Belgium), i.e. a small Caledonian inlier included in the Condroz Inlier, whereas some preliminary data are also presented for the Darriwilian–Sandbian (Middle–Upper Ordovician) brachiopods of the central part of the Condroz Inlier (Huy and Vitrival-Bruyère formations), Belgium. The brachiopods from the Oxhe Inlier (Oxhe Formation) were collected from several localities in the Oxhe Inlier where they are associated with trilobites, ostracods, molluscs, echinoderms and machaeridians. The Oxhe Formation yielded one lingulate, one craniate, two strophomenates and three rhynchonellates, while the Huy Formation yielded two lingulates to which are added one strophomenate and two rhynchonellates from the Vitrival-Bruyère Formation (Sart-Bernard Member). These taxa are assigned with variable degrees of confidence to existing taxa or described under open nomenclature. An age range of Darriwilian to Katian is confirmed. Multivariate numerical analyses (Nonmetric Multidimensional Scaling together with Network Analysis) indicate close comparison with other Avalonian faunas. Moreover, the combination of taxa suggests habitats in deeper-water environments around the Avalonian continent
