Covid Restrictions and Religious Freedom in Africa

    No full text
While patterns differed slightly across religious traditions, a majority of both Muslim-majority and Christian-majority countries enacted and enforced this type of restriction at some point during this period. In a large majority of these countries there was some resistance to the restrictions. By the end of 2022 all of them were lifted so these restrictions on places of worship and religious gatherings did not permanently impact religious freedom in the region and appear to be largely temporary government actions linked to the pandemic

Towards an environmental community. Walter Benjamin and the shift from the human domination of nature to the domination of the relationship itself

    No full text
___In a time of transition and danger, where environmental transformations merge with essential and irreversible changes, the debate requires and would benefit from new philosophical definitions. Revisiting Walter Benjamin’s work can provide valuable insights also into rethinking human-centredness and its relationship with the environment around. Therefore, reconstructing and actualising Benjamin’s thought can contribute to re-discussing the relationship with, and control over, nature. This can be achieved by analysing key themes such as progress, technology, and the relationship between humans and nature.Benjamin’s leitmotif of the critique of quantitative progress, which is central to his transversal approach to reading modernity and contemporaneity, also form the basis of this topic. Unlike the so-called modern approach, he suggests a conception in which the production of knowledge is reciprocal rather than hierarchical. The modern knowing subject should thus adopt a non-dominating approach when interacting whit what they call nature. This would also prevent them from falling into the dangerous cycle of capitalism, growth and destruction. The modern perspective, which is based on the assumption that humans and nature are distinct entities, with humans dominating nature, critiques traditional anthropocentrism. It suggests a shift in epistemology, in which nature becomes an integral part of a collective and inclusive cognitive process. This shift can be seen as the passage from the domination over something – in this case, nature – to the domination of the relational category itself (in One-Way Street: Benjamin 2016, 95), and points towards what we may term a horizontal environmental community. At the same time, and more classically, Benjamin’s work serves as a warning against the dangers inherent in 20th-century technology and politics. While doing so, it also highlights more general dynamics, whose risks include environmental destruction and political conformism. His critical reflections on technology and political limits – before annihilation and destruction – resonate with current concerns about sustainability and ecology, demonstrating foresight regarding these now widespread thoughts on these issues. With this lesser-travelled path of his thought, this article aims to fill a gap, contributing to both historiographical and philosophical reconstruction, as well as to current debates, by positing that Benjamin articulates these concerns in terms of sustainability and post-anthropocentrism – albeit using different terminology

Historical and linguistic investigations on the month-names of Cappadocian Calendar

    No full text
This paper deals with the ancient month-names of the so-called “Cappadocian Calendar,” which was transmitted by several Byzantine manuscripts: the most relevant are the Laurentianus, Plut. 28.26, the Leidensis BPG 78, and the Vaticanus gr. 1291, but many other codices are known and were described by Western scholars during the last five centuries. The first pieces of information about the Cappadocian Calendar can be found in 16th-century treatises on astronomy and chronological calculations written in Latin. The state-of-the-art of the philological issues concerning the manuscript tradition, the secondary sources, and the former linguistic interpretations of the month-names are thoroughly presented in the first part of the work. In the second part, the etymologies of the philologically ascertained forms are offered. The linguistic results of the research validate the thesis that the “Cappadocian Calendar” dates back to the 4th century BC and contains Proto-Middle-Persian names, which confirm the Mazdaean origins of the Calendar. These terms mostly correspond to Young Avestan and New Persian month-names attested both in Iranian and Western texts

UNRAVELLING ORNITHOPOD DIVERSITY IN THE LATE JURASSIC COASTAL ECOSYSTEMS OF EASTERN IBERIA (SPAIN)

    No full text
Ornithopod osteological fossils from the Upper Jurassic of Europe are relatively scarce and often fragmentary compared to those of other dinosaurian groups. Recent discoveries, particularly from the Iberian Peninsula, have increased our understanding of the diversity of these dinosaurs, although much remains poorly understood. This study reports new ornithopod fossils from several sites in the provinces of Valencia and Teruel (Spain). Geologically, all the sites are located within the South Iberian Basin in the Villar del Arzobispo Formation (upper Kimmeridgian–Tithonian). These fossils represent almost half of the ornithopod discoveries in the region. Their systematic study reveals, for the first time, the presence of dryosaurids and small-sized ankylopollexians, while further confirming the presence of large-sized ankylopollexians. These findings significantly increase the known diversity of ornithopods in the Upper Jurassic of eastern Iberia. Notably, small-sized ankylopollexians may have been among  the potential trackmakers of the enigmatic small quadrupedal ornithopod tracks reported from this region. The coexistence of at least three distinct iguanodontian taxa suggests niche partitioning and a high level of ecological complexity within the herbivorous dinosaurian communities of the coastal ecosystems in eastern Iberia during the Late Jurassic, a pattern likely widespread across the Iberian landmass during this epoch

TUFANBEYLİ: NEW LOWER PLIOCENE MAMMAL-YIELDING LOCALITY AND FIRST RECORD OF “MAMMUT” BORSONI FROM TURKEY

    No full text
At the crossroads between Africa, Asia, and Europe, Turkey occupies a prominent position regarding terrestrial mammal interchanges. In stark contrast with a wealth of Late Miocene fossil record, the Early Pliocene interval was virtually undocumented for large mammals in Turkey so far, which made it impossible to characterise their biogeographical affinities in the concerned time interval. In this study, we present the first record of the mammutid proboscidean “Mammut” borsoni in Turkey, found in association with the rhinocerotid Pliorhinus megarhinus, in Lower Pliocene lignite beams at the Tufanbeyli Thermal Power Plant Lignite Operation site, Adana. “Mammut” borsoni spans the Pliocene–Early Pleistocene interval in Eurasia while Pliorhinus megarhinus is a conspicuous element of uppermost Miocene-Pliocene faunas in Western Eurasia and Turkey. This megamammal assemblage represents an important advance in our knowledge of the large mammal faunas of the Early Pliocene of Asia Minor, further attesting to close biogeographic affinities between Anatolia and other circum-Mediterranean regions just after the end-Miocene salinity crisis

Training in reviewing: a teaching exercise on editions of contemporary texts

    No full text
This contribution offers a reflection on the relevance of editorial philology methods within the field of contemporary Italian literary studies. Drawing on recent teaching experience in a graduate course in Publishing, the essay illustrates how the design and use of a structured review form can serve as an educational tool for the analysis of critical and scholarly editions of modern and contemporary texts. The paper highlights the challenges of integrating philological awareness into contemporary literary criticism and proposes the structured review as a valuable exercise for developing skills in examining the mechanisms of textual transmission and editorial criteria

«Il presidente è tornata a dare battaglia»: a corpus-based study on the feminisation of job titles in Italian journalism.

    No full text
This study aims to examine the diffusion of job titles in Italian written journalistic language through a diachronic analysis, mainly based on a quantitative review of the corpus CORIS: the research aims to compare the use of feminine and unmarked masculine forms of a set job titles, each referring to women, first in the early 2000s and then in more recent years. At the same time, through a qualitative analysis of collocates, multiword expressions, and syntactic contexts, this study seeks to identify the linguistic factors influencing the choice between a feminine or an unmarked masculine form. The findings from this analysis will help shape a linguistic survey, exposed in the last part of this contribution, conducted among a sample of speakers, offering a first assessment of linguistic inclinations regarding the feminisation of job titles

The wills Of Carlo, Mastino, and Drusiana Visconti, heirs of Bernabò

    No full text
The aim of this contribution is to analyse five unpublished wills of three exiles of the Visconti family – Carlo, Mastino and Drusiana – heirs of the Lord of Milan Bernabò, forced to flee after the coup in 1385 by Gian Galeazzo Visconti. Drawn up in Venice according to the meticulous local notarial practice, the sources offer a privileged insight into the management of the estate, the dynastic strategies and the roots in the Serenissima, which had become their new social and economic centre. The analysis reveals the use of the testamentary bequest as a political instrument and for consolidating family memory: the practices of heritage protection are intertwined with the desire to integrate into the institutional and financial circuits of Venice, whose city institutions assume a key role. What emerges is a profound transformation of wills, which marks the passage from dynastic ambition to the construction of a new urban identity, centred on the conservation of the Visconti prestige and on the decisive weight of the hereditary estate, testifying to the ways in which the nobility in exile acted in the late Middle Ages.
