    Background: Non-infectious disease (NID) has become a public health problem both globally, regionally, nasionally, and locally. One of NID that takes a lot of attention is diabetes mellitus (DM). Risk of complication is higher due to lack of attention to lifestyle including diet. The concept of the glycemic index classifies carbohydrate is considered better in controlling blood sugar. However, some studies say otherwise. Therefore, research needs to be done by combining carbohydrate quantity concept (glycemic load) and glycemic indexObjective: To identify the relationship between estimated dietary glycemic index and glycemic load with blood sugar control, as well as to identify other factors associated with glycemic control of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitusMethod: This is an observational study with cross-sectional design. The population study were all outpatients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in Dr.Sardjito hospital Yogyakarta in 2014. Sampling method using a consecutive sampling with sample size of 79 people. Interviews regarding the identity of the respondents through questionnaires, physical activity (IPAQ), and semi-quantitative food frequency (SQFFQ). Blood sugar control (HbA1C) obtained from respondent’s medical record. The data were processed using univariable analysis (descriptive), bivariate (chi-square), and multivariate (GLM)Results: Most respondents were blood sugar uncontrolled (84,81%). Average of dietary GI and GL was 63,26±3,23 and 127,65±43,02. Bivariate test showed that the dietary GI and GL each has a RP value 1,023 and 1,002, and statistically significant (p0,05)Conclusion: There is a relationship between dietary GI, GL, and eating schedule with blood sugar control (HbA1C), but there was no correlation between duration of diabetes, nutritional status, physical activity, and education level with blood sugar control (HbA1C

    Background: Psychological factors such as anxiety have significant contributions in determining dietary intake and nutritional status of elderly. Prevalence of malnutrition in elderly has achieved significant level.Objective: To determine the correlation between anxiety level with dietary intake and nutritional status of elderly in Yogyakarta municipality.Method: This research was observational with cross sectional design. Subjects were elderly in Yogyakarta municipality who fulfilled inclusion criteria. Research subjects consisted of 214 people. Anxiety level was measured with trait-manifest anxiety scale (T-MAS) form, dietary intake with semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (SQFFQ) method, and nutritional status was determined based on body mass arm span (BMA). Data were analyzed with Chi-Square test and multiple logistic regression.Results: A percentage of 26.2% subjects had moderate anxiety level. Most dominant factors that influenced anxiety level was sex (OR=3.37). Bivariate analysis showed a significant correlation between anxiety level and nutritional status (p<0.05), subjects with moderate anxiety level were more likely to have higher nutritional status (OR=3.54) and lower nutritional status (OR=2.29). Significant correlation was found between moderate anxiety level with excessive dietary intake (p<0.001; OR=6.22). Significant correlation was also found between dietary intake with nutritional status (p<0.05), subjects with excessive dietary intake were more likely to have higher nutritional status (OR=6.15).Conclusion: Significant correlation was found between anxiety level and nutritional status.     Background: There can no longer be any doubt that adolescents do indeed have body esteem problems. Several types of research seem to suggest that this wrong behavior caused by some negative perceptions as a result of dissatisfaction with the body and a person’s level of self-confidence. Therefore they often do misperceptions of his/her body that can lead to wrong dietary behavior. It’s related to the development of more severe body image and eating-related problems.Objective: This study determined the relationship of body image perception and eating disorders in adolescents.Method: A cross-sectional study was applied in this study. The subjects were 120 new students majoring in a nutritional program in Bogor Agricultural University (IPB). They completed a questionnaire measuring appearance evaluation, appearance orientation, body areas satisfaction, overweight preoccupation, self-classified weight and eating disorders. Multidimensional Body Self-Relations Questionnaire-Appearance Scale (MBSRQ-AS) method is used to assess body image perception and Eating Attitude Test 40 (EAT-40) to predict eating disorders.Results: Descriptive analysis showed nutritional status were categorized as normal (83.3%), overweight (10.0%), obesity (4.2%) and thin (2.5%). With MBSRQ-AS method, most of the adolescents have appearance evaluation (80.0%), appearance orientation (99.2%), body areas satisfaction (80.8%), self-classified weight (71.7%) were categorized as negative, whereas overweight preoccupation (57.5%) were categorized as positive. There was (7.8%) female subject with eating disorders with more risk or have attitude the desire to eat continuously and can’t stop eating (2-3 times a month).Conclusion: Statistically using a significance level (α=5%) obtained a significant correlation between body image perception in overweight preoccupation subscale with eating disorders. However, there were no significant correlations for other subscales

    Backgrounds: The immune system changing affects the fitness. Exercise induces the immune responses, oxidative stress and tissue damage that alters leukocyte counts. Maltodextrin supplies higher energy reserves, that can improve the immune system profiles. Vitamin C as an antioxidant against tissue damage.Objective: This study aims to assess the effectiveness of a maltodextrin and vitamin C combination drink on leukocyte differential count after exercise.Method: This study was quasi-experimental with the within-subject design. Subjects were 14 collegiate football players of the State University of Yogyakarta and fulfilled the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Subjects were selected with a purposive sampling. Subjects received a combination of 15% maltodextrin and 250 mg of vitamin C beverage, 300 mL. Subjects did wash out for 6 days, then received placebo beverage (300 mL plain water). Subjects drank 30 minutes before and 5 minutes after physical exercise. Exercise loads were yoyo intermittent test and run gradually until 80 HRmaks. Blood samples were taken immediately and 30 minutes after exercise.Results: In the administration of intervention beverage, immediately to 30 minutes after exercise neutrophils increased (p=0,006); lymphocytes decreased (p=0.015); monocytes decreased (p=0.000); and eosinophils decreased (p=0.613). In the administration of placebo beverage, immediately to 30 minutes after exercise, neutrophils increased (p=0.359); lymphocytes decreased (p=0.257); monocytes decreased (p=0.146); and eosinophils increased (p=0.549). Neutrophils (p=0.003) and monocyte (p=0.003) had significant difference between both administration drink at 30 minutes after exercise. Lymphocyte and monocyte significantly decrease (p<0.05) at intervention than placebo.Conclusion: Maltodextrin and vitamin C combination drink effect on the decreasing of lymphocyte and monocyte 30 minutes after exercise

    Background: The increasing prevalence of adolescents obesity in the last decade have an impact on the increased prevalence of adolescents metabolic syndrome (MetS). Diet quality is one of the determining factors in the incidence of adolescents obesity, so it can also be a factor for MetS.Objective: To analyze the relationship between diet quality and MetS risk factors in obese adolescents.Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted on the 57 obese students in 7th and 8th grades of Nasima and Kesatrian Junior High School in Semarang. Blood pressure (BP) and waist circumference (WC) measurements, as well as blood samples for measurement of fasting blood glucose (FBG), triglyceride (TG) and HDL cholesterol (HDL-C), were conducted to determine the number of risk factors experienced by the subject. Diet quality was measured through assessment of food consumption using a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Pearson and Spearman's test was used to determine the correlation between diet quality and MetS risk factors.Results: The majority of obese adolescents (96.5%) had a low-quality of diet. There were 31.6% subjects experienced pre-metabolic syndrome and 68.4% had MetS, with the prevalence of MetS, was higher in male subjects. The diet quality, variety, adequacy scores and fiber intake of the pre-metabolic syndrome group were higher than MetS group. Variety and adequacy scores had significant negative correlation with TG (r = -0.374, p=0.004; r = -0.357, p=0.006, respectively). There was no significant relationship between diet quality score and the number of MetS risk factors (p=0.538), although they had a negative correlation (r = -0.083).Conclusion: Prevalence of pre-metabolic syndrome and MetS was 31.6% and 68.4%. Though there was no significant relationship, diet quality had a negative correlation with the number of MetS risk factors. Variety and adequacy scores had a significant relationship with triglyceride levels

    Background: The cause of obesity in adolescents is multifactorial. Increased consumption of fast food (fast food), lack of physical activity, genetic factors, the influence of advertising, psychological factors, socioeconomic status, diet, age, and gender are all factors that contribute to changes in energy balance and lead to obesity.Objective: To determine the factors that affect the incidence of obesity in adolescents. Method: A case-control study with a total of 144 subjects, cases are obese adolescents (BMI/U> + 2SD) and controls were non-obese adolescents. The independent variable is the macronutrient intake, fiber intake, the pattern of consumption of fast food, the consumption patterns of food / sugary beverages, physical activity, psychological factors (self-esteem), genetic factors, and intake of breakfast, while the dependent variable was the incidence of obesity. Data analysis using chi-square test and logistic regression. Results: Factors significantly associated (p<0.05) and a risk factor for obesity in adolescent is energy intake (OR=4.69; CI 95%=2.12-10.35); fat (OR=2.34; CI 95%=1.19-4.57); carbohydrates (OR=2.64; CI 95%=1.34-5.20); the frequency of fast food (OR=2.47; CI 95%=1.26-4.83); and the morning breakfast intake (OR=5.24; CI 95%=2.56-10.71). Conclusion: Teens who have excessive macronutrient intake, the frequency of consumption of fast food often, physical activity is not active, has a mom and dad with obesity status, and no breakfast, greater risk of obesity

    Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a disease of disorder of lipid and nonlipid metabolism. The West of Scotland Coronary Prevention Study found that men with MetS had probability 3.7 dysfunctions of erection (ED) by using International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF). Patient with heart disease had the risk 2 times to get ED, hypertension was 1.5-2 times, DM was 3-4 times, depression was 2-3.5 times, testosterone deficiency syndrome (TDS) was 1.5-2 times, and high cholesterol was 4 times. The nutrient deficiency of zinc (Zn) and magnesium (Mg) was suspected being the main component which had a role in resisting a sexuality growth and maturation process.Objective: Knowing the correlation of Zn and Mg feeding with erection dysfunction in MetS person.Method: This study was observational analytic study, with case-control design in the patient aged 30-60 years old. The respondent in this study was people with MetS according to WHO criterion. There was 82 patient divided into two groups, consist of 41 cases of MetS and ED, 41 cases with the normal patient. The data collected by interview, laboratory assessment and anthropometric measurement. The data analysis using univariate, bivariate and multivariate analysis using multiple logistic regression.Results: There was significant correlation between Zn feeding and ED (OR=7.15; 95% Cl=1.47-34.71; p=0.007) and there was significant correlation between Mg feeding with ED (OR=3.34; 95% Cl=1.07-10.4; p=0.033). The end result of the multivariate analysis showed the risk variable to the ED event, that was Zn feeding with OR=15.41. If the intake of Zn accompanied with risk factors associated as a cause of ED, multivariate analysis showed HbA1c’s degree with OR=12.57; triglyceride (OR=10.47); blood pressure (OR=5.82); and abdominal obesity (OR=6.94). The result shows that these risk factors can aggravate or anticipate the onset of dysfunction erection beside low Zn intake.Conclusion: There was statistically significant correlation between Zn and Mg feeding with erection dysfunction in MetS patient

    Background: Breast cancer is noncommunicable chronic disease the prevalence of which is increasing all over the world, including in Indonesia and particularly East Java. Causes of breast cancer are unknown. Some studies show risk factors for breast cancer are hormonal, genetic, reproductive and endocrinologic factors. There is the isoflavon compound in soybeans that is known as anti-cancer with anti-estrogen activities.Objective: The study was aimed at identifying risk factor and the difference of isoflavone intake between breast cancer patients and healthy people in hospitals.Method: The study was analytic observational using matched case-control study design at comparison 1:2 with matching on a status of menopause. Cases were positive receptor estrogen breast cancer patients newly diagnosed during the first visit at hospital outpatient Oncologic Surgery Polyclinic. Controls were staff considered healthy based on the result of health examination at Dr. Ramelan Naval Hospital of Surabaya. Cases comprised 49 people and control 98 people taken through consecutive method. Data consisted of an identity of samples, weight, height, isoflavone intake, family history, use of hormone replacement therapy and parity. Intake of isoflavones was obtained from semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire (SQ-FFQ) and statistical test used Chi-Square and Odd Ratio (OR).Results: There was the difference in isoflavone intake and family history between cases and controls (p<0.05) and there was an association between isoflavone intake (OR=2.58; p=0.007) and family history (OR=18; p=0.002) and the incidence of breast cancer. There was no association between the status of obesity, parity, and use of hormone replacement therapy.Conclusion: There are differences in isoflavone intake of breast cancer patients compared with healthy people and there was no difference in the status of obese breast cancer patients compared to healthy individuals and isoflavone intake less 2.85 times the risk of breast cancer compared with adequate intake of isoflavones

    Background: Stunting is one of the main problems of malnutrition often found in under-five children. The impacts include a delay in child’s growth, low endurance, lack of intelligence and productivity. The direct factors that influence the incidence of stunting are low birth weight (LBW) while the indirect factors are socioeconomic factors such as maternal education, low family income and a large number of family members.Objective: To analyze the relationship between LBW and the incidence of stunting in children aged 6-24 months in Yogyakarta Municipality.Method: This was a case-control study. The subjects were children aged 6-24 months with a group of cases comprising stunted children based on the indicator of height/age with a cut-off < -2 SD Z-score and the control group comprising normal children. The number of subjects for the study was 242 with the under-five children’s mothers as the research respondents. The sample selection used non-probability sampling with a consecutive sampling method. The data were analyzed by Chi-Square and multiple logistic regression.Results: The proportion of children 6-24 months who had low birth weight was 15.7 %. There was a significant relationship between LBW and the incidence of stunting in children aged 6-24 months (OR=5.60; 95%CI:2.27 to 15.70). There was a relationship between maternal height and the incidence of stunting in children aged 6-24 months (OR=2.14; 95%CI:1.08 to 4.33). Socioeconomic factors (maternal education, family income and a number of family members) did not have a significant relationship with the incidence of stunting.Conclusion: LBW had a relationship with the incidence of stunting in children aged 6-24 months in Yogyakarta Municipality

    Background: The increased prevalence of obesity will bring a great impact in the health sector, due to the effect of the influence of organ in the body such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Reduced energy diet and exercise are effective for management weight loss. During the restriction diet, an obese person should increase the amount of dietary fiber up to 20−35 g/day, specifically of soluble fiber, to more effective fat loss and improve serum high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and triglyceride (TG) cholesterol concentration. Psyllium husk (PH) is a source of natural soluble fiber obtained from Plantago ovate Forssk seed.Objective: The aim of the study have investigated the change of body weight, serum HDL cholesterol, and TG concentration in obese I after supplemented PH 8.4 g/day and balanced deficit calories diet (BDCD) for 4 weeks.Method: The survey used double-blind randomized clinical trial with parallel design. Subjects were randomly divided into two groups; treatment (T) group and placebo (P) group. The T subjects received psyllium husk (PH) 8.4 g/day and BDCD 1200 kcal/day and the P subjects received placebo and BDCD 1200 kcal/day. The analyzed used independent t-test and Mann-Whitney.Results: A total 28 subjects (14 subjects in each group) had completed the intervention. There were no serious adverse effects reported during the intervention. Intake of dietary fiber in T group was 17.2 ± 2.8 g/day had significantly higher than P group 8.6 (5.2−15.2) g/day, although supplemented with PH didn’t meet the recommendation of fiber intake (20-35 g/day). Decrease of body weight was -1,8 ± 0,8 kg and triglyceride level was -1,5 (-416−77) in T group that statistically insignificant difference (p=0,39 and p=0,84) with P group -1,6 ± 0,9 kg and -10,0 ± 31,3. Soluble supplementation (P group) increased serum HDL cholesterol concentration was 0,0 ± 4,3 mg/dL that statistically insignificant difference (p=0,86) with T group -0,4 ± 5,9.Conclusion: PH supplementation 8.4 g/day and BDCD 1200 kcal/day in obese I can not reduce body weight, serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglyceride concentration level in 4 weeks
