    Get PDF
This research explores the perceptions of the millennial generation of the belis tradition in Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) on social media, particularly Twitter. Belis is a traditional dowry practice in East Nusa Tenggara, deeply rooted in cultural significance as a symbol of respect, social recognition, and the familial alliance between the bride and groom’s families. The belis tradition has recently faced scrutiny from the millennials, who question its relevance in the modern era. This research employs qualitative analysis, drawing on primary data from tweets featuring the hashtag #TradisiBelisNTT. These tweets were examined through Foucauldian Discourse Analysis (FDA) following the six stages as outlined by Willig (2008): (1) Discursive Construction, (2) Discourse, (3) Action Orientation, (4) Positioning, (5) Practice, (6) Subjectivity. The findings suggest that belis is frequently perceived as an economic burden for men, hindering financial equality in marriage and prompting individuals to seek alternatives arrangements. The discourse as expressed in X reveals intricate power dynamics, as the millennial challenges traditional cultural norms and calls for reform in more inclusive and equitable cultural practices. The findings highlight the tension between preserving heritage and advocating for change, offering insights into how digital spaces facilitate dialogue on cultural reform

The Potential of Mangongkal Holi as a Cultural Tourism Destination

    Get PDF
Mangongkal holi is a secondary burial ritual of the Toba Batak tribe that can only be performed in the hometown of each clan located around Lake Toba. As the highest ritual in Toba Batak customs, Mangongkal Holi is a representation of the cultural identity of the Toba Batak tribe. Based on this, Mangongkal Holi can be an integral part in relation to the government's efforts to revitalise Lake Toba as a tourist destination. This article aims to analyse the potential of the Mangongkal Holi ritual as a cultural destination. The results of the analysis prove that the presence of dance, percussion, and ritual performance elements in the mangongkal holi procession of mangongkal holi has the potential as a cultural tourism destination for national and international tourists. The implementation of mangongkal holi also has an impact on the creative economy industry at the location of implementation. However, the potential of mangongkal holi as a cultural tourism destination is hampered by an unstructured implementation schedule and socialisation of ritual implementation which tends to be exclusive to the Batak toba clan

Plants for the Ancestors: Traditional Knowledge and Beliefs of the Mentawaians on Siberut Island.

    Get PDF
Plants for the ancestors that entail the traditional knowledge and beliefs of the Mentawaians on Siberut Island, is exclusive traditional knowledge of the indigenous people of Mentawai. Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) is one of the most fascinating knowledge sources and valuable to preserve and explore for future regional importance as many types of ethno botanical products remain unexplored.      When viewing western medicine supplied at the pharmacy, it has to be realised that many started their medicinal use in a village somewhere close to a forest of field. A clear example would be the use of opium and the many healing derived components in modern medicinal treatment. Industrial produced based pharmaceutical medicine has often been synthesised from the ethno-pharmacological range of herbal medicines and new components discovered in nature. By consulting the knowledge of traditional healers, possible new cures might be encountered from our natural environment. In Indonesia the importance of TEK has been particularly stimulated by the introduction of regional autonomy in the year 2000. It has reinforced indigenous political as well as regional economic power, to develop local natural resources for a national and international trade. It has introduced an economic development that has strengthened awareness of local botanical potential and involvement of gender opportunities in a resurge of interest in medicinal plants and domestication in Mentawaian herbal gardens

Negotiating Merariq: Cultural Continuity and State Efforts to Prevent Child Marriage in East Lombok

    Get PDF
This study examines the role of the East Lombok government and Muhammadiyah in addressing child marriage within the Sasak community, with particular attention to the culturally embedded practice of Merariq. Conducted over two months of fieldwork between January and February 2025, the research employed a qualitative design that combined document analysis, participatory observation, and in-depth interviews with ten local community members, two religious leaders, and five government officials. Data were analyzed using an iterative coding process beginning with open coding to identify emergent patterns, followed by focused coding aligned with Bourdieu’s framework supplemented by theoretical triangulation to enhance analytical rigor. The findings indicate that although legal frameworks have been formally implemented, their effectiveness is hindered by entrenched cultural norms, economic pressures, and the coexistence of overlapping legal systems. In contrast, Muhammadiyah’s initiatives, particularly its reinterpretation of Islamic values and its community-based family-strengthening programs, have demonstrated greater cultural resonance and have offered practical alternatives to early marriage. These insights underscore the necessity for culturally sensitive and multi-institutional approaches that effectively integrate statutory enforcement, religious authority, and community engagement. The study contributes to broader discussions on child marriage prevention by illustrating how tradition, law, and religion interact within pluralistic societies, and by providing actionable pathways for local institutions to reduce child marriage while honoring cultural heritage.

    No full text
Ruwat Desa, a Javanese agricultural ritual, persists in Wunut Village, Sidoarjo, despite losing 66% of farmland to industrial conversion (1985-2024). This pattern appears across Java's industrializing regions, where villages lost 45-65% of agricultural land, yet ritual participation declined only 15-20%. How does an agricultural ritual persist when its material foundations vanish? Existing frameworks fail: Geertzian involution explains cultural maintenance through agricultural intensification, not cultural intensification when land disappears. This study applies Bourdieu's practice theory to reveal capital substitution, communities strategically replace declining economic capital with enhanced cultural and symbolic capital. Three-year ethnographic research (2022-2024) with 10 informants demonstrates three mechanisms: funding shifted from 85% farmer contributions (pre-1990s) to 60% non-farmer sources (post-2000s); communities preserve core elements (sacred site, wayang performance) while adapting peripherals (gunungan contents, organization); generational habitus transformed from cosmological conviction to pragmatic observance to heritage valorization. Cultural sustainability operates through strategic capital restructuring rather than material continuity, advancing beyond predictions of cultural decline and offering insights for agrarian-industrial transitions across Indonesia and the Global South.

The Decline of Tengklung Gobleg Bali Martial Arts: A Socio-Cultural Analysis in the Era of Globalization

    Get PDF
This study investigates the declining interest in Tengklung Gobleg, a traditional martial art from Gobleg Village, Buleleng, Bali. Employing a qualitative approach, data were collected through interviews, field observations, documentation, and literature review. The analysis drew on perspectives from globalization, social identity theory, and related concepts. The findings indicate several contributing factors to the decline: limited socialization, lack of awareness among the younger generation, paternalistic cultural patterns, insufficient institutional support, and a growing preference for instant gratification among potential trainees. A key insight from this study is the shift in youth perception—Tengklung Gobleg is increasingly seen as outdated, while martial arts from outside Bali and Indonesia are viewed as more appealing and relevant. This reflects a broader cultural shift influenced by global exposure and changing social values
