    An Error Analysis Of Communicative Effect Taxonomy Of The Tenth Grade Students’ Writing Of Descriptive Text

    The purpose of this research analyzes the errors that students in the tenth grade experienced when writing descriptive texts for the communicative effect taxonomy. The findings indicated the students made both global and local errors in communicative effect taxonomy. The most frequently local errors produced by the students which consist of 44 or 57, 14%, that consist of 4 kinds; noun and verb with total error 28 or 36, 36%, article with the total error 14 or 18, 18%, quantifier with the total error 1 or 1, 29% and auxiliary with the total error 1 or 1, 29%., followed by global error with the total error 33 or 42, 85 error. Intralingual was the highest frequentcy of the students, response with the frequency of source was 26 or 31,70%, interlingual was 24 or 29,26%, context of learning was 24 or 29,26% and communication strategy was 8 or 9,75%

    Exploring Higher Education Learners' Experience of Utilizing Gemini Chatbot in English Language Learning

    The tremendous progress in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) has resulted in the creation of advanced chatbots that can participate in intricate conversations. This research investigates university students' experiences using the Gemini chatbot for learning English as a second language. It emphasizes the advantages as well as the difficulties encountered. A case study method was used to observe and interview 10 students from a public institution in North Sumatra. The findings indicate that the Gemini chatbot's interface, which is easy to use, the comprehensive feedback it provides, and its wide range of capabilities have a substantial positive impact on students' language proficiency and self-assurance. Nevertheless, several constraints were observed, including imprecise translations, problems with speech recognition, and technological challenges such as poor internet connections. Effective approaches to address these obstacles including using alternate educational materials, implementing well-organized study timetables, participating in virtual learning groups, and employing formal language to enhance communication clarity with the chatbot. This study offers useful insights for educational institutions and policymakers on the optimization of AI chatbots in language teaching university students' experiences using the Gemini chatbot for learning English as a second language. to successfully enhance student learning

    “Ispeak” an Application to Improve student’s speaking competencies

    The rapid progress of technology in recent years has introduced innovative approaches to education, enabling educators to leverage technology for teaching. This study examines the "Ispeak" application’s impact on junior high school students' speaking skills, specifically focusing on fluency, pronunciation, and vocabulary usage. The research aims to identify the specific features of the Ispeak application that enhance these aspects of speaking skills and explore its potential as an effective tool in technology-enhanced learning environments. Utilizing qualitative methods, the study collects and analyzes data through questionnaires, interviews, and documented sources. The findings reveal that the Ispeak application significantly supports English language learning by offering a flexible and cost-effective learning experience. Key to its effectiveness are the supportive role of teachers and the consistent use of the app by students, both of which contribute to improvements in speaking competencies. &nbsp

    Unveiling the Enigmatic Semiotics of Batak Culture in Missing Home Movie

    Culture is one of the lifestyles inherited from generation to generation. This research aims to unveil Batak Toba culture in Missing Home movie by using Barthes’ Semiotic theory since Batak Toba culture is very well-known for its diversity. Descriptive qualitative method through collecting data predominantly in the form of words, images, and other visual or textual representations was used since this research focused on social phenomena and its nature, provide a holistic description or action which was conveyed in the form of words and language for a special context. The object of the research was a movie released in 2022 namely Missing Home. Barthes’ semiotic theory (denotation, connotation and myth) was employed to analyzed the data. Semiotic can be in the form of songs, music notes, dialogue and body movements which in this research Barthes prioritizes 3 main pillars, namely denotation, connotation and myth. This research carried out several concepts with the aim of revealing Barthes' semiotic signs. The sign has been shown through images, dialog, scenes and the background of the movie. Based on the analysis, it was found that there were 7 scenes contained the semiotic meaning (denotation, connotation and myth) from Barthes’ semiotic theory. To conclude, this research can shed light on how cultural symbols, rituals, and traditions are portrayed, provide insights into how cultural elements are interpreted and represented in media, especially within the context of a specific movie

    This research analyzes the phenomenon of code-switching in the video titled “The Science of Love-Maudy Ayunda's Booklist,†uploaded by Maudy Ayunda on a video-sharing platform. The research methodology involves data collection through video analysis to identify instances of code-switching between Indonesian and English in Maudy Ayunda's discourse. Following identification, an analysis is conducted to understand the reasons behind the use of code-switching and its impact on public communication. The research findings indicate that code-switching is employed to enrich information delivery, emphasize concepts, and reach a broader audience. This phenomenon reflects the cultural and linguistic complexity in multilingual societies. Code-switching also plays a role in social inclusion and effective communication. This study provides valuable insights into cross-cultural and cross-linguistic communication and its relevance in the context of globalization and social media

    This research was motivated by the many expressive speech acts contained in buyers' comments on the Shopee Jennskin Naturals Officials account. Buyers' expressive speech acts have an important position and greatly influence the psychology of other buyers regarding their satisfaction with the online shopping experience. The problem of this research is how to express the expressive speech acts of buyers' comments on the Shopee Jennskin Naturals Officials account. The aim of this research is to explore and elaborate on the expressive speech acts of buyers' comments on the Shopee Jennskin Naturals Officials account. The theory used in this research is the theory of expressive speech acts proposed by Searle. This research uses a qualitative approach with the content analysis method. The data in this research are expressive speech contained in buyers' comments on the Jennskin Naturals Official shopee account. The data source for this research is the speech in the comments of buyers of the Jennskin Naturals Official shopee account which were spoken by buyers of deodorant products with screenshots. Data collection techniques use documentation and notes. Data analysis techniques in this research are data transcription, classification or grouping data, description stage or analyzing data and concluding data. The results of this research found a total of 201 data of expressive speech, there were 63 data of thanks, 14 congratulated, blamed 20 and praised 104. Of the expressive speech found, the most dominant was the expressive speech of praise. The usefulness of this study in education can be a guide for teachers, students and other readers in expressing appropriate speech to interlocutors in their daily live

    Recognizing the critical intersection of technology and education, particularly in language acquisition, the State Islamic College of Madina in North Sumatra undertook a study to investigate the innovation and development of English language learning media through Information Technology (IT) integration. The study aimed to address the following objectives: firstly, to identify the existing technological landscape in English language instruction; secondly, to assess the effectiveness of IT-based learning resources; and finally, to explore opportunities for improvement and future development in this domain. This research seeks to bridge the gap in literature by examining the nuanced impact of IT integration on English language education within the context of a religious institution. Employing a mixed-methods approach, data were gathered from students, educators, and administrators to gain insights into their perceptions of IT-based learning resources. The key findings revealed varying levels of technological competence among participants, impacting their engagement with IT tools. Educators emphasized the necessity of seamlessly integrating technology into lessons to enhance student engagement and learning experiences. Meanwhile, students acknowledged the convenience of digital resources but highlighted challenges such as technical issues and content relevance. Notable trends include the importance of investing in educator professional development and improving IT resource accessibility. &nbsp

    Investigating Buying-Selling Communication Patterns in The Kangean Community at Kalikatak Market: An Ethnographic Communication Approach

    This research aims to investigate the communication dynamics within the Kangean community during buying and selling activities at Kalikatak Market, employing an ethnographic communication approach. Through participant observation and interviews, the study explores communication strategies, language variations, linguistic codes, and cultural norms prevalent in these interactions. Data collection involved attentive listening, recording, and note-taking during market interactions, supplemented by a reflective introspective method to engage both researcher and respondents in communication patterns. The speech data collected was transcribed, condensed, categorized, and validated, leading to the interpretation of findings represented in a visual scheme illustrating communication dynamics. The study reveals the predominant use of the Kangean Dialect Malay Language (KDML) with the ako-kao language variety in buying and selling interactions, along with the role of non-verbal cues as signals and linguistic codes reflecting cultural identity. Additionally, cultural norms emphasizing sincerity, attentiveness, and honesty were observed. This research provides valuable insights into the communication patterns within the Kangean community at Kalikatak Market, shedding light on the intricacies of social interaction in a marketplace setting and suggesting avenues for further exploration

    Storytelling Strategy to Improve Indonesian Listening Comprehension

    This study evaluates the impact of the storytelling method on learning outcomes in Indonesian language subjects for junior high school students. Through a combination of observations and field notes, significant improvements were observed in students' story comprehension, speaking skills, and creativity. The storytelling method was effective as it engaged students in an interesting and relevant context, boosting their motivation to learn. Expressive storytelling helped students understand and remember storylines better and improved their speaking skills by providing practice opportunities in a supportive atmosphere. Additionally, storytelling fostered creativity by encouraging imagination and improvisation. The study concludes that storytelling enhances students' motivation, interest, speaking skills, listening comprehension, and overall communication abilities. Therefore, it is an effective approach for Indonesian language learning at the junior high school level

    Modality in The Grand Campaign Speech of Presidential Candidates of Indonesia 2024

    This research deal with types of modality used in the Speech Texts of the Presidential Campaign of the 2024 Indonesian General Elections. The objectives of this research were to analyze and categorize the modality used in the grand campaign speech texts of presidential candidates of the 2024 and to elucidate the realizations of the types of modality whether Modalization or Modulation used in the grand campaign speech texts of presidential candidates of the 2024.  The researcher had observed and looked at the speeches of the three candidates of the 2024 presidential election from KOMPASTV news in YouTube, wrote the transcripts of the speeches of the three candidates and identified the modality in the speech. Based on Halliday’s theory about Modality, it could be found in the sentence or clause. It was found that the modulation of obligation at medium levels of modality was the most used in the grand campaign. It was the most dominant feature found among the three candidates, Prabowo Subianto, Anies Baswedan and followed by Ganjar Pranowo. It meant the candidates convinced the voter that the candidates had obligation before the voters’ futures as they used modulation of obligation type in their grand campaign speech
