    Discovery of ST2 centers in natural and CVD diamond

    The ST2 center is an optically addressable point defect in diamond that facilitates spin initialization and readout at room temperature. However, while this study presents the discovery of photostable ST2 centers first observed in a natural diamond and provides a reliable technique for artificially creating them, its chemical structure remains unknown. To assess the potential of ST2, we map out its basic optical characteristics, reveal its electronic level structure, and quantify the intrinsic transition rates. Furthermore, we investigate its response to microwaves, static magnetic fields, and the polarization of excitation laser light, revealing twelve inequivalent orientations of the ST2 center. Simultaneous exposure to microwaves and static magnetic fields also reveals an exceptionally wide acceptance angle for sensing strong magnetic fields, unlike the well-established NV center, which is sensitive only within a narrow cone aligned with its symmetry axis. This finding establishes the ST2 center as a highly promising candidate for nanoscale quantum sensing

    Impacts of climate change on water resources and farming community adaptation strategies in southwestern Ethiopia

    Water scarcity traps smallholder farmers in a vicious circle of poverty and challenges individual well-being. This study explores the impact of climate change on water resources and the factors influencing smallholder farmers to adopt various strategies to overcome water scarcity in the context of climate change. Multi-stage sampling techniques were used to collect data from sampled household heads (N = 1946) from five districts in the southwestern parts of Ethiopia, namely Diga, Guto Gida, Wayu Tuka, Sasiga, and Gimbi. Household-level water scarcity adaptation strategies were explored using a multivariate probit model (MVP) and multidimensional econometric model. Results show that 58.6% of household heads reported climate change impacts on water availability. Household heads exposed to agricultural yield loss tend to have greater awareness about climate change. Results show that access to water resources has a strong negative effect on the use of the rainwater harvesting strategy. Social networks, extension services and use of mass media have a positive effect on the utilization of water harvesting, water rules, protection of the watershed, public capacity building and the improvement of water infrastructures. Variables such as age, marital status, income, and limited institutional support significantly influence smallholder farmers’ decisions to utilize different water scarcity adaptation strategies. This study generates practical policy implications of the impacts of water scarcity for rainfall-dependent smallholder farmers in developing countries

    Recycling matters – the role of secondary production in metal markets

    In an effort to ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns, recycling has been recognized as one key strategy. With technological advancements further enabling more efficient material recovery, recycling is set to emerge as an influential force in global metal markets, reshaping traditional supply-demand dynamics. To better understand the role of secondary production and its interdependencies within these markets, we employ structural vector autoregressive (SVAR) models to simultaneously analyze the relationships between primary and secondary supply, demand, convenience yield, and futures prices from 2010 to 2023. The analysis highlights the critical role of recycling in the aluminum and lead markets, significantly influencing prices, consumption and, convenience yield, helping to mitigate scarcity and lower commodity prices. In contrast, the dynamics of the copper market are dominated by primary producers, reflecting their larger share of total production volume. While primary producers struggle to adapt to market changes quickly, our findings show that secondary production is highly responsive, particularly to fluctuations in futures prices. This responsiveness highlights the ability of recyclers to increase production volumes when market conditions become more profitable. Our findings underscore the contribution of recycling to an efficient market and emphasize its importance in a sustainable and circular metal industry
