    Mediating authorship : wordsworth, copyright and media history

    This essay presents William Wordsworth’s advocacy for the reform of copyright laws as an event in Romantic media history. Previous scholars have discussed the poet’s engagement with Thomas Noon Talfourd’s petition in the 1830s as indicative of the period’s larger negotiation of the economic and cultural values of literary art. This essay argues that beyond issues of economic and aesthetic recognition, Wordsworth is aware of the significance of copyright as a central means of shaping the author’s communication with his readers. Within the proliferating mediascape in print in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, Wordsworth draws on the agency afforded by copyright to intervene in the process of mediation. Proposing mediation as an important new analytical approach to the discourses and practices of Romantic authorship, this essay outlines Wordsworth’s efforts toward controlling the codes and channels of communication as crucial concerns in the period’s evolving print culture

    Stabilized recovery and model reduction for multivariate exponential polynomials

    Recovery of multivariate exponential polynomials, i.e., the multivariate version of Prony's problem, can be stabilized by using more than the minimally needed multiinteger samples of the function. We present an algorithm that takes into account this extra information and prove a backward error estimate for the algebraic recovery method SMILE. In addition, we give a method to approximate data by an exponential polynomial sequence of a given structure as a step in the direction of multivariate model reduction

    On the complexity of strong approximation of stochastic differential equations with a non-Lipschitz drift coefficient

    We survey recent developments in the field of complexity of pathwise approximation in p-th mean of the solution of a stochastic differential equation at the final time based on finitely many evaluations of the driving Brownian motion. First, we briefly review the case of equations with globally Lipschitz continuous coefficients, for which an error rate of at least 1/2 in terms of the number of evaluations of the driving Brownian motion is always guaranteed by using the equidistant Euler-Maruyama scheme. Then we illustrate that giving up the global Lipschitz continuity of the coefficients may lead to a non-polynomial decay of the error for the Euler-Maruyama scheme or even to an arbitrary slow decay of the smallest possible error that can be achieved on the basis of finitely many evaluations of the driving Brownian motion. Finally, we turn to recent positive results for equations with a drift coefficient that is not globally Lipschitz continuous. Here we focus on scalar equations with a Lipschitz continuous diffusion coefficient and a drift coefficient that satisfies piecewise smoothness assumptions or has fractional Sobolev regularity and we present corresponding complexity results

    Hamilton cycles in pseudorandom graphs

    Finding general conditions which ensure that a graph is Hamiltonian is a central topic in graph theory. An old and well-known conjecture in the area states that any d-regular n-vertex graph G whose second largest eigenvalue in absolute value λ(G) is at most d/C, for some universal constant C > 0, has a Hamilton cycle. In this paper, we obtain two main results which make substantial progress towards this problem. Firstly, we settle this conjecture in full when the degree d is at least a small power of n. Secondly, in the general case we show that λ(G) ≤ d/C(log n)1/3 implies the existence of a Hamilton cycle, improving the 20-year old bound of d/ log1−o(1) n of Krivelevich and Sudakov. We use in a novel way a variety of methods, such as a robust Pósa rotation-extension technique, the Friedman-Pippenger tree embedding with rollbacks and the absorbing method, combined with additional tools and ideas. Our results have several interesting applications. In particular, they imply the currently best-known bounds on the number of generators which guarantee the Hamiltonicity of random Cayley graphs, which is an important partial case of the well known Hamiltonicity conjecture of Lovász. They can also be used to improve a result of Alon and Bourgain on additive patterns in multiplicative subgroups

    Data-driven prediction of relevant scenarios for robust combinatorial optimization

    We study iterative constraint and variable generation methods for (two-stage) robust combinatorial optimization problems with discrete uncertainty. The goal of this work is to find a set of starting scenarios that provides strong lower bounds early in the process. To this end we define the Relevant Scenario Recognition Problem (RSRP) which finds the optimal choice of scenarios which maximizes the corresponding objective value. We show for classical and two-stage robust optimization that this problem can be solved in polynomial time if the number of selected scenarios is constant and NP-hard if it is part of the input. Furthermore, we derive a linear mixed-integer programming formulation for the problem in both cases. Since solving the RSRP is not possible in reasonable time, we propose a machine-learning-based heuristic to determine a good set of starting scenarios. To this end, we design a set of dimension-independent features, and train a Random Forest Classifier on already solved small-dimensional instances of the problem. Our experiments show that our method is able to improve the solution process even for larger instances than contained in the training set, and that predicting even a small number of good starting scenarios can considerably reduce the optimality gap. Additionally, our method provides a feature importance score which can give new insights into the role of scenario properties in robust optimization

    Convergence of hybrid slice sampling via spectral gap

    It is known that the simple slice sampler has robust convergence properties; however, the class of problems where it can be implemented is limited. In contrast, we consider hybrid slice samplers which are easily implementable and where another Markov chain approximately samples the uniform distribution on each slice. Under appropriate assumptions on the Markov chain on the slice, we give a lower bound and an upper bound of the spectral gap of the hybrid slice sampler in terms of the spectral gap of the simple slice sampler. An immediate consequence of this is that the spectral gap and geometric ergodicity of the hybrid slice sampler can be concluded from the spectral gap and geometric ergodicity of the simple version, which is very well understood. These results indicate that robustness properties of the simple slice sampler are inherited by (appropriately designed) easily implementable hybrid versions. We apply the developed theory and analyze a number of specific algorithms, such as the stepping-out shrinkage slice sampling, hit-and-run slice sampling on a class of multivariate targets, and an easily implementable combination of both procedures on multidimensional bimodal densities

    Climate change as a driver of migration? A comparative case study in eastern and northern Ghana

    Academic studies and media reports have pointed to climate change as a dominant factor responsible for future mass migrations from and within the Global South. In response to the deterministic nature of their estimates and predictions, this research explores the link that migrants establish between the environmental changes they experience and migration as a climate adaptation strategy. Furthermore, the overlaps between the profile and migratory behavior of those who manifest a greater presence of climate change in their migratory processes and their counterparts are analysed to identify potential unique climate migration patterns and practices. The quantitative analysis of data gathered in the context of the Mitra|WA project in Ghana's Eastern and Northern Regions in 2022 reveals that, while migration is not predominantly propelled by climate change climate, it does not constitute a new form of mobility demarcated from existing migration patterns and practices. This paper provides an opportunity to redirect future research towards the factors that determine the agency of individuals in response to climate hazards and to explore the role of climate change in a set of drivers of migration in a West African setting

    Crossing Soviet Thresholds: Privacy, Literature, and Politics in Late Soviet Russia

    My dissertation examines literary mythologies of privacy in the authoritarian Russia of 1953–1985. This era was marked by an expansion of “non-state spheres,” or areas of life of which the Communist state increasingly released its control after Joseph Stalin’s death in 1953. Political elites, architects, and designers, as well as ordinary citizens co-constructed and explored the rising spheres through the languages of their respective fields—by producing regulations and laws, designing and erecting new types of buildings, developing new and modernizing already familiar everyday objects as well as devising new ways of integrating these objects into private and public spaces. Alongside these voices, transformations in the cultural sphere in general, and literature in particular, were most vocal. The late Soviet era witnessed the dissolution of the ossified ideology of socialist realism that focused on the glorification of the “new Soviet man” and had held culture in its tight grips since the 1930s. Starting from the 1950s, writers increasingly focused on portraying areas of life that lay beyond one’s public commitments and experimented with new meanings, codes, and forms to give shape to novel spheres of experience of the “late Soviet man” that can be subsumed under the concept of the “private sphere.” The analytical framework of my dissertation is built around the journey to understand the mechanisms and architecture that powered the imagination of models of distancing oneself from the state and the society at large—scenarios of privacy, as we may call them today. I examine Russian prose and drama of the 1950s–1980s as a laboratory for the ideas of privacy, which was increasingly sought in the society disillusioned by the Communist doctrine and thus progressively alienating from active participation in the public sphere. I analyze the meanings that writers incorporated into new and old forms of domesticity—private flats that became progressively widespread throughout the 1950s–1980s, rooms in communal apartments, individual houses—to determine the spectrum of concepts that nurtured the idea of privacy in the late Soviet literary imagination. I also examine representations of reciprocal paradigms of relations between subjects from which the state and society at large were increasingly excluded. In the examples that I analyze, forms of private withdrawals variate from establishing control over liminal spaces or escaping into the world of feelings and emotions and building a connection to a person or space (significant for the characters for private rather than public reasons) to experimenting with language and pursuing one’s idiolect despite the ubiquitous “officialese,” as well as living in temporalities asynchronous with the public time. Beyond revealing the visions of different, non-state existences in the late Soviet era, my text also advocates examining the role of official literature as a platform for subversion and change that was no less important in an authoritarian state than dissident literature. I see officially published texts as a cultural subaltern who defies the state of affairs and slowly but firmly turns the “state sphere” into a public one by pushing its own agenda through publications that test and gain ground for bolder visions of Soviet life that are not predicated on the commitment to the public sphere. With individual mechanisms of power assertion employed by the state or literature in the late Soviet era well-researched, the framework is still missing that would capture the shifts of borders between the private and public spheres under the influence of these actors. In devising such framework, I build upon sociological theories of disattendability and civil inattention that Erving Goffman conceived to describe conventions of individual behavior and social interaction in public. Extending these theories toward the studies of literary politics, I argue that by envisioning scenarios of a private retreat and bringing them into officially published editions, literature normalized privacy as a late Soviet imaginary and, therefore, continuously heightened its own disattendability, thereby expanding the borders of the private sphere. On the side of the state, the border was defined by the triggers of disturbance of civil inattention: privacy was conceded in return for disattendability. Under such conditions, literature became a bizarre “private kitchen” that performed private and public functions simultaneously—similar to the kitchens in newly-built individual apartments that were popular loci of socialization in the late Soviet era. It turned into a place where one can escape—it became one of the “niches of privacy” where it was possible to discuss and negotiate the world, in which the society lived or to which it should strive. At the same time, it assumed the role of a surrogate for the public sphere within the “state” sphere by pushing its own agenda through the publication of literary texts that sought to imagine a person rather than a cog in the Communist machine and thus transformed socialist realism into a literary current “with a human face.” In my research, privacy, literature, and politics are bound together to reveal a vibrant spectacle of the continuous interaction between the state, cultural elites, and the citizens, in which thresholds are erected and crossed incessantly. Fictional private sites were battlefields for the production and contestation of ideologies, and the exposure of these literary wars to the public eye played a fundamental role in shifting the borders between the private and the public spheres in an authoritarian late Soviet Russia. The patterns of relations between the state and culture that I uncover in my dissertation resonate in neo-authoritarian twenty-first-century Russia, making privacy an important lens for our insight into the role of culture in rising authoritarian and failing democratic systems across the globe
