Zeevruchten: Zeeduivel, vis van het Jaar 2018
Met als winnaar de zeeduivel, was de keuze voor de ‘Vis van het Jaar 2018’ zeker geen schoonheidswedstrijd… Zeeduivels hebben een grote, lelijke kop die tot twee derde van het gewicht van de vis kan bedragen. Meestal verwijdert men die kop al aan boord van het vissersschip en zie je in de viswinkel enkel de vlezige staart. Enkele decennia geleden was zeeduivel zeer geliefd, vooral op restaurant op een bedje van prei en op het menu aangekondigd als “lotte” of “staartvis”. Tegenwoordig kiezen nog maar weinig mensen voor deze soort. Nochtans is zeeduivel gekenmerkt door stevig vlees en heeft hij nauwelijks graten. Qua bekendheid kan de soort best wel een duwtje in de rug gebruiken, oordeelde de Vlaamse marketingorganisatie VLAM. En omdat de toestand van de bestanden het toelaat, vonden de Vlaamse visserijwetenschappers dit geen slecht idee
Environmental Impact Assessment process for deep-sea mining in 'the Area'
Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is key to the robust environmental management of industrial projects; it is used to anticipate, assess and reduce environmental and social risks of a project. It is instrumental in project planning and execution, and often required for financing and regulatory approval to be granted. The International Seabed Authority currently requires an EIA for deep-sea mining (DSM) in areas beyond national jurisdiction (the Area), but the existing regulations present only a portion of a robust EIA process. This article presents an ideal EIA process for DSM, drawing upon the application of EIA from allied industries. It contains screening, scoping and assessment phases, along with the development of an environmental management plan. It also includes external review by experts, stakeholder consultation, and regulatory review. Lessons learned from application of EIA elsewhere are discussed in relation to DSM, including the integration of EIA into UK domestic law, and the reception of EIAs prepared for seabed ore extraction in the Exclusive Economic Zones of New Zealand and Papua New Guinea. Finally, four main challenges of implementing the EIA process to DSM in the Area are presented: 1) EIA process for DSM needs to incorporate mechanisms to address uncertainty; 2) detailed requirements for the ETA process phases should be made clear; 3) mechanisms are needed to ensure that the EIA influences decision making; and, 4) the ETA process requires substantial input and involvement from the regulator
Potential health risks via consumption of six edible shellfish species collected from Piura – Peru
Scallops and their potential predators were collected in Sechura Bay and in front of the Illescas Reserved Zone (north Peru), during El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) 2016, and analyzed for the metals chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb). This study showed that ~20% of the molluscs exceeded the maximum residual levels (MRLs) for human consumption in inorganic As, while ~30% of the crustaceans did. For Cd, around 10% and 40% of the molluscs and the crustaceans were above the MRLs, respectively. The cephalopod Octopus mimus exhibited As concentrations, but not Cd concentrations, that exceeded the MRLs. Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn and Pb in muscle exhibited generally concentrations below the MRLs. Integrated risk indices were estimated to determine if there is a health risk for consumption. Target hazard quotients (THQs) and total hazard indices (HIs) were mostly Bursa ventricosa at Illescas Reserved Zone. Documenting the SS Kilmore, 10 years after Zintzen <i>et al</i>
Zintzen et al studied the marine life on the SS Kilmore between 2003 and 2005 0, 0. GUE-BE divers now return to the wreck to evaluate her present condition, capture photo and video, build a 3D photogrammetric model 0 and survey the marine life. This presentation invites the scientific community to fine tune our project goals and help us interpret our results. Global Underwater Explorers (GUE), a global leader in scuba education, conservation and exploration, emerged out of a desire to safely explore and protect the underwater world and to improve the quality of education and research in all things aquatic 0. GUE divers have advanced experience that enables them to safely reach depths and locations that many recreational divers never could. They can assist researchers, as well as launch their own initiatives, like the discovery of the 16th century Swedish warship Mars 0 or a 12,000-year-old human skeleton in the Mexican Hoyo Negro cave system 0. GUE-BE that unites the Belgian GUE community 0, released a website 0 about its 2017 Project with a short documentary on the Westhinder and a 3D model with centimeter-level detail. The subject of our 2018 Project is the SS Kilmore, which sank in 1906 and now lies at 32 m. GUE-BE volunteers will explore her on five days between May and September 2018, quantify her fauna, create a 3D model, website and documentary about her history, condition and environmental significance, map abandoned fishing gear, and record temperature and visibility. Although several GUE-BE volunteers are scientifically trained, they are not biologists and have no such aspirations. We therefore reach out to the research community to help us identify the most relevant species and data collection method, and determine the observed animals. By collaborating as citizen scientists, we hope to contribute to initiatives like BeRMS2020 0
